Perhaps he will change his mind, given the situation. Never been one to willingly choose sides anyway, going more by what suits his interests in the moment. For the time being he'll settle for teaching Ianto to be less of a wimp and keep to himself. What else is there to do, anyway?

"Of course you'd trust that... me, I'm not so sure. No remains if you kill a vampire, for starters."

"Good point," Jack acknowledges wryly, "though that wouldn't necessarily make a difference when it's all virtual anyway."

He inclines his head. "Of course, if it's all virtual anyway, perhaps no-one here has really died at all, including me. And perhaps you haven't really got your soul back."

Something to think about.

((OOC: Yeah, loving that thread with Ianto, and the relationship that's building up there!))

"Does it matter?" He can understand how the reveal of the virtual reality illusion can change things for some people, but for him there's little difference from how it was before. The experience is still real, the changes and interactions. If they treat this as anything other than that, then what's the point.

"Still hurts, doesn't it? Can't just pretend like it doesn't."

On a day to day basis, yes, things are still exactly how they were before, and Jack isn't one to dwell on the metaphysics of it either, except when he thinks he might be able to use the virtualness to his advantage.

He shrugs. "Yes, of course it still hurts. But personally? I find it hurts a hell of a lot less when you know it's not the last thing you're ever going to feel. It's just physical pain. You don't have to deal with the fear of dying, the despair, all the emotional junk."

It says a lot about Jack as a person, he thinks. That he's so callous about pain, even more so than Spike is. That says so much, considering that he shrugs off almost everything that life throws at him... but death? If you take death lightly, then how can you still appreciate life?

"Must be nice being you." scoffs the dead man.

It says a lot about how many, many times Jack's died, really. Spike's only done it the once. Jack's done it thousands of times. It really does lose some of its horror after a while.

He tilts his head, not really able to understand where Spike's coming from with that. "It's my gift - my power," he shrugs. "If I didn't use it for good, what would be the point in having it?"

He makes an unimpressed noise, taking another deep drag off his cigarette.

"This again... what good are you using it for, exactly? Aside from trying to recruit the one guy in this bloody prison who really don't want to get involved in this clusterfuck?"

Jack gives him an exasperated look. "I'm trying to recruit the one guy who knows Tyki. That doesn't seem all that stupid to me!"

He groans, grinding the cigarette out under his boot. Ugh.

"Jack... listen to me really carefully because I'm not going to say this again. I'm not fighting Tyki. I'm not joining your boy scout troupe. He had his fingers inside my brain. I don't want to find out what else he can do."

He shrugs, sighing slightly. "Fine. I won't ask again."

Well, not until the next time anyway.

He cocks an eyebrow curiously. "When did he have his fingers inside your brain?"

Spike has a feeling this won't be the last he hears of it. It never is.

"Ancient history. Chip, bad zappies, he took it out, I lived happily ever after until you lot started handing out souls like they're Mardi Gras beads."

Of course it won't be. But he'll let it go for now. It's flown right out of his mind anyway as he finally - finally! - cottons on to the reason Spike went on that killing spree that ended in him getting re-ensouled.

"The thing that stopped you being able to hurt anyone," he realises slowly. "That was Tyki?"

Yet one more thing he needs to kill Tyki for.

Okay, so maybe the matter of Tyki hasn't been blown that far out of his mind after all.

"Of course it was Tyki. Who else do you know that can perform a back-alley chipendectomy?"

He's surprised there wasn't more backlash from that, actually. And to be perfectly honest getting rid of the chip wasn't the thing that made him kill — the chip kept him in place, the urge was already there and he continued to keep a mostly low profile for weeks if not months after getting it out.

"To be honest, I didn't really know what it even was that had changed it all for you. All I knew was that one minute you couldn't hurt anyone and the next minute you... could."

He studies Spike, thinking about it all. "You actually trusted him with his fingers inside your brain?"

"I wanted it out." He shrugs. People put too much trust in... well, trust. Mutual benefits tend to work better for him. Temporary truces.

"Don't tell me you trust everything that gets shoved inside you?"

Touché. He grins, showing his teeth. "I trust the people doing the shoving. Mostly."

Oh yeah, there have definitely been occasions where he's been desperate enough not to worry too much about safety or the intentions of the other person. Temporary truces. He gets it.

There are three ways this can go down. He could either ignore it and change the subject, which will never ever happen. He could act all grossed out and give Jack more material to work with, which is getting old. Or... he could bring it right back to what started this whole thing. The secret.

"And here I didn't think you cared."

He chuckles. "Oh, Spike, Spike, Spike, I care all right. Or at least, my libido does. You do know that." Even without secrets being spread throughout the Dome like wildfire.

His gaze is fairly candid, warm even, but his eyebrows go up a bit as he adds, "Doesn't mean I trust you, though."

It's true. Hearing that Jack has the hots for him isn't exactly news. He's felt the comforting press of a needy erection during their fights enough times to know that but it's still different to see it out there black on white.

"Maybe there's hope for you still."

"Thanks," he says dryly, and yeah, it does feel weird to finally have this out there - to have actually said it. In the long run, it might not change anything physically, given the rules of the prison, but it might lead to a new level of their relationship, perhaps - a new level of candour, a deeper connection?

Or then again, perhaps Spike's enough of a rebel still that it won't.

He shrugs, and takes a sip of his now cool enough coffee. "So, what have you been up to lately? Found anything else to stave off the boredom?"

"Not really." He shrugs, clearly displeased with the state of his life here in the godforsaken fishbowl.

"Shagging, drinking... that's about it. Most of the fun people are gone. Not a whole lot left to do around here."

Aside from teaching Jack's boytoy how to protect himself, obviously. That's certainly a thing that happened and will probably continue to happen, as long as Ianto's up for it. A weird friendship, that.

Yeah... Jack doesn't know about the thing with Ianto yet. It's going to be interesting to see what his reaction will be when he does find out...

He gives Spike a droll look. "I'm glad you said most of the fun people are gone." He definitely puts himself into the category of fun!

"Though yeah, it is starting to get a bit empty around here, isn't it? Perhaps the AIs are coming towards the end of their experiment - though I'm not sure whether that's a good thing or not!"

"That they're ending it? Good. That we're still here? Really not."

He's not sure what to think but the brush in with the Initiative was enough to teach him that if you get stuck with mad scientists, get out as quickly as you can. This is not quick.

"I don't know about you but I've been ready to leave for a while now."

Jack darts him a quick look. "Depends on where leaving would actually take us. Just sleeping in a pod doesn't sound like much of an improvement, and frankly, neither does ending up where I was before."

He quirks a brow, taking a moment to look Jack over. He's not surprised, per se, but it is interesting to hear that the great big hero is... well.

"Aren't you working with the Force to find a way out of here?"
