I didn't tell you because of this, of how you're reacting. I didn't-- don't want to be treated differently, looked at differently and... I just want to be treated like normal, not like I'm sick and fragile.

Sick and fragile is the last words I'd use to describe you. [It comes out along with an angry snort. He's pissed. Really pissed, but at this point, Mal's also trying to find a way past it too. He didn't want to lose what they'd just found... even if it did mean a black band. And then she asks him her next question.]

Well toying with their emotions and acting as though nothing's wrong definitely ain't the proper way, Inara.

[For a second she looks honestly hurt that he might even think such a thing but then that melts away to anger of her own. Her hands ball in fists at her side and she rolls her shoulders back. She glares at him for a moment and then with a shake of her head, her expression is completely neutral.]

If that's what you truly believe, then I don't think we have very much else to say to one another.

[He's angry enough he throws the various slips of paper in his hand on the floor. A bad idea likely, but he's not really thinking straight. Mal turns on his heel and stalks away. If Inara's looking, she might see one of those slips of paper has her name on it: 'Inara comin' to this prison's the best thing that ever happened to me.' He really should have thought things through.]

[She watches him stalking away and part of her wants to go after him but she knows with how their tempers are... Well nothing much will be accomplished.

She shakes her head and looks down at the papers that he'd tossed down and seeing her name on one of them, her eyebrows draw together and she crouches down and picks it up.

'Inara comin' to this prison's the best thing that ever happened to me.'

She sighs, eyes closing and she can't help but hate the wardens.]
