She laughed and shook her head. "Nope. It's not worth wanting anyone where I come from, they all end up dead." She shrugged her shoulders like it was no big deal, even though it was. It got lonely keeping people at arm length constantly, but she wasn't about to complain or moan about it.

Johanna looked back to the board and picked another secret off of it. "My brother was my first love." Her eyebrows lifted and flipped it over hoping to see a name on it but it as anonymous. "See? You're not the only messed up one."

Well, at least it doesn't seem like she's going to pursue the subject of his unwanted urges for Spike. His lips curl in wry amusement at her comment. "Oh, believe me, sweetheart, I know that!"

Then he cocks his head at her earlier statement, because that's resonating with him, but he's not sure she means it exactly the way he would. "People in general keep dying, where you're from, or just the ones you care about?" he asks gently.

She could have kept on with her picking on him about his crappy taste but one he looked like he'd wanted to hit her and she just wasn't in the mood to have to hit him in the face. But if he called her sweetheart again, she would punch him. "My name is Johanna."

Johanna's lips pressed together and she pinned the secret back on the board. She didn't need anyone to feel sorry for her, especially some guy with really bad taste. "People in general keep getting killed and anyone I cared about was killed long ago." She glanced over at him, her expression neutral because that was the best way to be, no emotions. "It's just how things are."

Oh, Jack could take a fair bit of teasing about his taste in men (he knew it was questionable, in this case at least!) but he was more interested in the very obvious way Johanna backed right off the moment he tried to connect with her.

He was all too familiar with that way of dealing with things. Way too familiar.

And he knew better than to try and push, especially with a stranger. Instead, he just smiled ruefully in acknowledgement of her comment and focussed instead on misinterpreting her reaction to his 'sweetheart'. "Good to meet you, Johanna," he said glibly, smile spreading to show off two rows of perfect white teeth as he offered his hand to shake. "Captain Jack Harkness."

Johanna didn't like connecting with people because when she did, they had a habit of dropping dead. Well, Finnick hadn't but he'd been a victor and the Capital didn't want to lose their golden boy. She knew she wasn't home but she wasn't sure that the rules weren't the same.

She turned to face him, a hand moving to rest on her hip. Her gaze flickered lazily over him and she shook her head. He kinda reminded her of Finnick - which made her want to punch him because she didn't need to be reminded of him. But after a moment she reached out and took his hand.

"Captain of what?"

He waited through her visual assessment with the ease born of knowing you looked good, however much else you might hate about yourself. His handshake was strong and assured, and warm, like his smile, which widened again at her question.

"All sorts of things, over the years," he told her, blue eyes twinkling. "Not a lot here to be captain of, though, unless you count the Defence Force, which I do actually captain half of."

Yeah, Captain Jack Harkness was certainly attractive but she could tell that he knew it. She wouldn't be surprised if he used his looks to get him things he wanted, most of them did. But it wasn't like she could judge him about that. Well she could but she didn't care.

That was a lot of her problem. She just didn't care, not about anything or anything in that prison.

"There's a Defense Force down here? What's there to defend against?"

What was the point of having good looks if you didn't use them?

He gave her a rather dry look at her question. "It's a prison, full of criminals. Okay, quite a few of them are people whose 'crimes' have been committed trying to save people, but we also have our share of actual dangerous people. Vampires who attack people because it's fun." A shadow passes across his face. "Intangible people who tear people to bits because it's fun."

Well if Jack Harkness tried any of his pretty boy crap with her, he was going to end up with a broken nose.

"Criminal is such a blanket term," she said, her voice matching his dry look. "I killed a lot of people. But, it was kill them or they kill me." Her eyebrows lift though because she wasn't even sure what the hell a vampire was. "What? Vampires? I don't know what those are."
