"Yeah, right." Amusement warring with embarrassment, still. That protest is definitely a bit too vehement!

He sighs a bit, shrugging. "I guess it doesn't really matter anyway. Not like anything's ever going to happen here, is it?"

Damn rules.

"Not going to happen here, not going to happen anywhere. And don't get any filthy ideas in your head about your boytoy either. He wouldn't make a good blond."

So maybe that's something he's more likely to do but still, the thought of Jack taking out his desires on a substitute is just as gross as the real thing.

For a long moment, Jack just stares at him blankly. No, Spike, he really doesn't work his frustrations out in the same way you do! He's almost as grossed out by the idea as Spike is.

"Really not something you have to worry about," he says dryly, while his brain whirrs away extrapolating just whom Spike might have needed a substitute for before, because that remark obviously didn't just come out of nowhere!

It didn't. He's not there yet, back home, but still he remembers what it was like. Waking up one day, realizing what he should've realized years before. The shit he did from that moment onwards. Shit he's not proud of.

"Good. Keep it that way... and keep it in your pants."

Jack smirks. Spike seems so upset by this that he's almost starting to feel like he's got the upper hand.

"Yes, sir," he says ironically, and then adds, because he can't help wanting to tease, "Mind you, I seem to remember reading somewhere that you were so bored you almost wanted a good staking!"

Oh. Oh fuck. He hadn't seen that one yet but whose else could it be? It makes him tense, like a goddamn deer in the headlights.

"Shut up."

Oh, now this really is fun. His eyebrows climb up his forehead, and his smirk widens.

"Yeah? Going to make me, are you?"

"Maybe I should."

His expression is darkening. Been here too long, this place has taken too much from him already. There's nothing for him to do and save for Rose, he wonders if there's even anything left.

"Yeah... I'm bored. I'm bored out of my bloody skull. Can you blame me?"

"Not really, no." He's not that bored himself, but he misses the adrenaline of Torchwood enough that he can understand how someone like Spike might find this place.

He frowns slightly, studying Spike thoughtfully.

"Just how bored are you? How willing would you be to throw in with the good guys in order to get some action?"

"Against Tyki, you mean."

Not a question. Who else is making trouble around here? Patting himself down, Spike takes a moment to find a cigarette and light it.

"I'm bored, not suicidal. I've seen what that man can do with a crucifix." And to put weight to his statement he pulls at his shirt, revealing a pale but visible scar on his chest. "Don't fancy having one of those permanently attached to me."

"Yeah, against Tyki." No point in denying it, after all. He watches with interest as Spike firstly tries to distract himself with a cigarette and then reveals that very interesting scar.

His eyebrows go up. "Way I heard it, you were friends. When did that change?"

"Didn't. We're still friends, last I checked."

Or something like it, which isn't as much of a reason to not take Tyki down as people might believe. Spike isn't too attached to debts owed and camaraderie, so although Tyki helped him out with the chip and did what he could to stop the ensouling, it only counts for so much.

"I ate something I shouldn't have. Didn't sit too well with him... but he could've done a lot worse. A lot."

"Ah." That at least makes sense. He's intrigued, though, by this insight into how Tyki works, and instantly pressing for more.

"So what stopped him doing worse, do you think? He doesn't seem like the type to stop when he's having fun."

"Maybe he is... but he's not stupid. Even I don't kill something I still have use for."

Like that snivelling little wimp that helped him translate the restoration ritual. Completely useless, aside from that specific task.

"And what use do you think he still has for you?"

There's no bite in what could be quite a barbed insult; it's a genuine question.

Well, then. "So... not much of a friendship left there, then?" he prods, still trying to get a feel for where Spike's loyalties lie.

"Of course, I guess feeling useful isn't really your sort of thing anyway, but if you're bored enough to want it, I think we could have uses for you, even if Tyki doesn't."

To his credit, he does take a moment to mull it over. Jack's not wrong. Things changed after he got his soul back and with Piter gone, the little band of botherers they had going is no more. No skin off his back, he's always been mostly loyal to himself first but it does leave him directionless. No mayhem to cause. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad to step up to bat for the good guys?

"No." he shakes his head, decisively. "Not interested. I'd be an idiot to get in the middle of all that... besides, figured dying to save the world is a one-time thing. Not really looking for a repeat."

He watches the thoughts flitting across Spike's expressive face, not really hoping for a 'yes', but hoping to at least have planted the seed of an idea that might grow with time.

He shrugs when Spike gives his decision. "Fair enough. Although, hadn't you noticed? Dying isn't so permanent any more."

Perhaps he will change his mind, given the situation. Never been one to willingly choose sides anyway, going more by what suits his interests in the moment. For the time being he'll settle for teaching Ianto to be less of a wimp and keep to himself. What else is there to do, anyway?

"Of course you'd trust that... me, I'm not so sure. No remains if you kill a vampire, for starters."

"Good point," Jack acknowledges wryly, "though that wouldn't necessarily make a difference when it's all virtual anyway."

He inclines his head. "Of course, if it's all virtual anyway, perhaps no-one here has really died at all, including me. And perhaps you haven't really got your soul back."

Something to think about.

((OOC: Yeah, loving that thread with Ianto, and the relationship that's building up there!))

"Does it matter?" He can understand how the reveal of the virtual reality illusion can change things for some people, but for him there's little difference from how it was before. The experience is still real, the changes and interactions. If they treat this as anything other than that, then what's the point.

"Still hurts, doesn't it? Can't just pretend like it doesn't."

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

On a day to day basis, yes, things are still exactly how they were before, and Jack isn't one to dwell on the metaphysics of it either, except when he thinks he might be able to use the virtualness to his advantage.

He shrugs. "Yes, of course it still hurts. But personally? I find it hurts a hell of a lot less when you know it's not the last thing you're ever going to feel. It's just physical pain. You don't have to deal with the fear of dying, the despair, all the emotional junk."

It says a lot about Jack as a person, he thinks. That he's so callous about pain, even more so than Spike is. That says so much, considering that he shrugs off almost everything that life throws at him... but death? If you take death lightly, then how can you still appreciate life?

"Must be nice being you." scoffs the dead man.

It says a lot about how many, many times Jack's died, really. Spike's only done it the once. Jack's done it thousands of times. It really does lose some of its horror after a while.

He tilts his head, not really able to understand where Spike's coming from with that. "It's my gift - my power," he shrugs. "If I didn't use it for good, what would be the point in having it?"
