Day 300 - Evening Anniversary Mingle
The festival continues. The dome's "sun" begins to set and the the sky is painted in gradually darkening shades until all is dark beyond the warm glow of the lanterns and sparkling of the colored lights on the rides and booths.

The speakers high above on the floating island begin to play soft, instrumental music and the dark dome flickers to life once more as projections of landscapes light the sky. They fade in and out every few minutes with images of cityscapes, deserts, seasides, mountain ranges in shades of futuristic, ancient, post-apocalyptic, foreign, and outer space. It may seem like a random assortment at first, but then the scene shifts again and just might take your breath away as you recognize what you're seeing. No people. No animals. But the landmarks are all there. It's a place you grew up or lived or worked or fought for or died at, and then it's gone again, fading into someone else's memory. Sometimes the scene is distinctly autumn-themed. Sometimes it isn't.

After an hour or so the scene shows another sunset and the sky goes dark aside from the sparkling of a starscape. New lanterns are lit leading a path to the beach where there's a large white open-style tent with a dance floor, the ceiling strewn with fairy lights. Flames light the fire pits and there are several cozy resting areas set up with plush cushions and thick candles half-buried in the sand for light. The music takes on more variety and life, perfectly suitable to dancing. Refreshments are available for those who've yet had their fill or simply need a moment to cool off away from the dance floor for a moment.

They don't care much about our rights and they probably have a reason. Hard to say if it's as good-natured as they want us to think it is. [She'd bet against it.]

Is it hopeless? [It would be so awful if it was. It would be so awful not to have anything to cling on to in here.]

If I was going to believe in hopelessness I would have done it a long time ago. Not in a prison with a beach and all you can eat restaurants.

Pets in cages have feed bowls.

[Her nostrils flare, anger making her heart race.]

I'm sorry. I must be a bit of a.. Downer, is the word right?

Don't worry about it. I know it's just a prettier cage than most. Kind of why we work on the whole getting out and shutting it down thing.

I know. I know.

[Gwen looks out into the distance, her eyes focusing on something she can't quite see, perhaps it's too far away, perhaps it's not even there. She doesn't really know.]

How long have you been here Kitty?

I showed up on Day 24 so roughly forever. [Or 276 days if you want to be more specific.] Not even a year. It feels like longer though. [Sometimes it feels like every day is actually seven days.]

Probably not what you want to hear.

Not really no. Time always drags out though. Especially under conditions like these.

I heard once that if you want to keep scorpions you have to move their terrarium around, because they will kill themselves if they realize they are captives.

[The scorpion imagery sticks in her mind a little too well. She's used that proverb of the scorpion and the turtle a few times to think about the way things go with her and Tyki.]

It's strange how much they try to distract us from that while also reminding us of it. I mean it's VR, right? The never had to tell us it was a prison in the first place. We would have figured out the lack of leaving, but the crimes and all that? It didn't need to be said.

[The reminder of the reality, or lack there off, hits her very hard. But she tries to move past it, sitting up a little bit, moving in closer. As if they are not watched all the time. As if there is privacy.]

Punishments. It's all... It's all punishments isn't it? The images in the sky, they're showing us our homes, reminding us of what we've lost.

Maybe. Maybe it's just stimuli to see how we react. And maybe it just makes it harder on us if we spend a lot of time thinking of the maybes.

Kitty can I ask you something?

[Her hands grasp her dress now. The fabric seems to vibrate between her hands as she stretches it to it's limit, not looking at it, her eyes burrowing into Kitty's face.]

Why stop now? [But only if her face survives all this burrowing.]

Do we deserve this? All of us here, did we... Did we deserve being ripped out of time and space to be put here? To be in... Bloody tubes or whatever while we dream a reality?

Are we bad?

No. [She doesn't need a lot of hesitation or reflection to answer this one. She's thought about it before and she knows her answer.]

I can't speak for everyone, but I know there are people here who don't deserve it, and I know there are people back home who do who I've never seen, so it's not merit based. [It's easier basing these things off Reid and Apocalypse rather than looking inward and choosing to condemn or absolve herself.]

Good.[The gently caress of relief straightens her face from its despair. She lets go of her dress, and smiles.]

Good. Or well not... God I'm selfish.

I think anyone would be relieved to hear that, so you can probably cut yourself a little slack.

I have a feeling most of us feel guilty about the things on our lists too even when there weren't many options.

Terribly sorry about the lateness, sad stuff happened in my life

Probably. I suppose very few people are truly innocent in everything.

[A small breath of air slips shivering from between her lips.]

It's like my blood is boiling you know. All of me just.. Shaking. I'm so tired.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

No worries!

Are you sure it's just being tired? I mean, there's a creepy robot-run hospital that could check you out or the clinic with some people who are doctors at home. I know it can be a lot. [The stress, the thinking.]
