Day 300 - Evening Anniversary Mingle
The festival continues. The dome's "sun" begins to set and the the sky is painted in gradually darkening shades until all is dark beyond the warm glow of the lanterns and sparkling of the colored lights on the rides and booths.

The speakers high above on the floating island begin to play soft, instrumental music and the dark dome flickers to life once more as projections of landscapes light the sky. They fade in and out every few minutes with images of cityscapes, deserts, seasides, mountain ranges in shades of futuristic, ancient, post-apocalyptic, foreign, and outer space. It may seem like a random assortment at first, but then the scene shifts again and just might take your breath away as you recognize what you're seeing. No people. No animals. But the landmarks are all there. It's a place you grew up or lived or worked or fought for or died at, and then it's gone again, fading into someone else's memory. Sometimes the scene is distinctly autumn-themed. Sometimes it isn't.

After an hour or so the scene shows another sunset and the sky goes dark aside from the sparkling of a starscape. New lanterns are lit leading a path to the beach where there's a large white open-style tent with a dance floor, the ceiling strewn with fairy lights. Flames light the fire pits and there are several cozy resting areas set up with plush cushions and thick candles half-buried in the sand for light. The music takes on more variety and life, perfectly suitable to dancing. Refreshments are available for those who've yet had their fill or simply need a moment to cool off away from the dance floor for a moment.

[ It's nice, isn't it? Fantasizing about maybe getting married or having babies. Stuff that's always been impossible and so can't possibly backfire in any way, shape or form. ]

Oh, absolutely. That's the way all the best fairy tales end, after all.

[Backfire? Never!] I like it. I've never actually planned my life out before. Well, the career part, sure, but not the actual life part.

About time, then. You know... I never really planned for life either. Or a career. Weird how prison makes you think about all that stuff.

To be fair it's a very vacationy prison. So you never planned for things beyond helping your aunts? Family, kids, stuff like that? [Trying to balance curious with not making this conversation suddenly scary and weird.]

[ She shakes her head. ] I mean, I wanted to some day but even leaving the house was hard. It took forever before I could even go on a vacation.

Every job I had, I did from home.

Your aunts must be pretty amazing ladies for you to care so much about them. I was kind of the opposite. I always knew what I wanted to do, went right out and did it and then it blew up in my face. Literally.

They are. [ And also the only family she has left. It makes for easy choices. ]

So what would you do now? If you really could come home with me.

Well I just assumed I'd stay at home to cook and clean since you'll be out doing bee things all day to support us.

You know it would make life more exciting, dreading the sort of chaos you were going to come home to each day.

Oh yeah. That's exactly the kind of chaos I want to deal with. [ It's nice though. Tending to the bees, maybe moonlighting as a jury member for a paraplegic judge. Coming home to a disaster. ]

You never thought about settling down sometime? Not even as a kid?

I like to keep things exciting. [Actually that does sound kind of fun.]

Sure, in an abstract little kid way that doesn't count. I think this conversation counts as the first serious examination of the subject for me.

[ Ah... should she? She should, right. It's just... hypothetical. They're just talking and she snuggles in a little closer, arm squeezing around his waist. ]

Tell me more. What else would you want?

[He likes talking like this. It's a nice balance of serious and sweet and oddly enough the fact that it's purely imaginary possibilities makes it easier to be honest.]

I don't know. I think it would be easy for me to stop fighting without the Empire in the picture. I only do what I do because I hate it. Life after that isn't something I've ever thought would actually happen. But I like the idea of settling down. I never really imagined kids before because I didn't have someone to imagine them with before. Also because I think I'd be a very strange influence on a child. But I don't know, it's a nice thought.

[ It does make it easier but also, she kind of wants this now. Like how when you decide you're absolutely not having ice cream but then you think about what you'd choose if you did have ice cream and now that's the only thing anyone can ever think about in the history of man. ]

For what it's worth, I think you'd make a great dad. We'd have strange kids either way, I bet.

[Agreed. It's that old thing about wanting what you can't have. But hey, now that they know how they're being kept here maybe escape isn't so impossible after all. It's a nice motivation.]

You'd make a great mom. But you're also correct in that our children would have absolutely no chance at turning out normal.

I don't think that's so bad though. We're not normal and we're doing okay.

[Its pretty romantic down on the beach, considering it must have been set up by robots who are not always known for their skill at interpreting human emotions. It's wonderful to wrap his arms around her and start swaying to the music.] I'll warn you, I have little dancing skill combined with the urge to try dramatic spins and moves so this could get dangerous.

[ Oh gosh! So glad she changed into a spinny skirt. ] Who would've thought prison would be the place for all that?

It's weird. You're the first guy I feel like I don't have to be careful around. It's like nothing in the world freaks you out.
