Day 300 - Evening Anniversary Mingle
The festival continues. The dome's "sun" begins to set and the the sky is painted in gradually darkening shades until all is dark beyond the warm glow of the lanterns and sparkling of the colored lights on the rides and booths.

The speakers high above on the floating island begin to play soft, instrumental music and the dark dome flickers to life once more as projections of landscapes light the sky. They fade in and out every few minutes with images of cityscapes, deserts, seasides, mountain ranges in shades of futuristic, ancient, post-apocalyptic, foreign, and outer space. It may seem like a random assortment at first, but then the scene shifts again and just might take your breath away as you recognize what you're seeing. No people. No animals. But the landmarks are all there. It's a place you grew up or lived or worked or fought for or died at, and then it's gone again, fading into someone else's memory. Sometimes the scene is distinctly autumn-themed. Sometimes it isn't.

After an hour or so the scene shows another sunset and the sky goes dark aside from the sparkling of a starscape. New lanterns are lit leading a path to the beach where there's a large white open-style tent with a dance floor, the ceiling strewn with fairy lights. Flames light the fire pits and there are several cozy resting areas set up with plush cushions and thick candles half-buried in the sand for light. The music takes on more variety and life, perfectly suitable to dancing. Refreshments are available for those who've yet had their fill or simply need a moment to cool off away from the dance floor for a moment.

That's a bit heartrenching to hear and he turns so he can give Jack a proper hug. Sometimes its hard to remember the time difference separating them. Off in the distance he can hear music playing and he doesn't want to end this day on a melancholy note. Slipping his hand into Jack's he pulls him gently in the direction of the lights on the beach. "You know it's been awhile since we've danced."

Jack hugs him back and sighs softly, letting it go. It's not a new pain, and he can leave it behind easily enough now. Especially with a celebration going on, and dancing in the tent nearby.

He lets Ianto have his hand, smiling at him as they start to head along the beach. "It has, hasn't it? I guess we really ought to do something about that!"

He gives Ianto a sidelong look. "Of course, on the Day 200 celebrations, I couldn't dance with you, thanks to those damned black bands!"

Ianto laughs at the memory. "I had almost forgotten about that. I suppose in retrospect I should be flattered by how much you missed me. We had an odd first day, didn't we?" He starts dancing as he speaks, one hand in Jack's, the other resting on the small of his back. They don't often do things like this, but he's always had a weakness for them. There's something undeniably romantic about it all.

"Not nearly as odd as some of the days we've had since," Jack comments wryly, settling comfortably into Ianto's hold, still unusually quiet and thoughtful as a result of all the memories the day's stirred up.

"Kissing bots and fear monsters and dreams... swapping bodies with Spike, swapping with my younger self..." He chuckles softly. "They certainly keep us on our toes here!"

"These things always seem to happen to you, don't they?" Ianto observes with amusement, perfectly content to reminisce while swaying under the lights. "Your younger self was utterly insufferable, by the way. I'm not sure I've mentioned that to you. I like this version much better."

Jack pulls back enough to give him a dry look.

"I do remember that day, you know," he comments, mock-warningly. "I know at the time I didn't remember anything of this, but afterwards I remembered the whole day as if it literally was yesterday, just not having been myself."

Which, at least, actually makes a bit more sense now he realises his form here is just a projection of his mental self.

"Oh, so you remember being insufferable?" Ianto teases, not at all intimidated by the look. It's been a long time since Jack could get away with that. Relenting a bit he adds, "You seemed very young. I wasn't used to that."

All the transformations and oddities make more sense knowing none of this is real but he's not exactly comforted by knowing how easily their programming can be disrupted. Are the mistakes deliberate for the entertainment of their captors? Sabotage by some outside force? Just shoddy wiring? None of those thoughts are particularly reassuring.

"Being insufferable has been my aim for a very long time," Jack points out mildly, so very comfortable here in Ianto's arms, enjoying the banter. It really does feel like such a huge relief to finally have things back to normal.

He shakes his head gently, smiling. "I really was young. I'd almost forgotten what that was like... I was so sure of myself, my world so black and white. So incredibly naive."

"So sure you could jump immediately inti my pants," Ianto adds dryly. To be fair it had been hard to resist. But he's glad he did. Even knowing Jack remembers everything clearly it still feels like talking about a different person and he's not sure he would have liked that.

He is also very glad to have things back to normal. It's such a relief to have that pearl and all the tension that went with it gone. Like he can finally breathe easily now.

Jack gives him an amused look. "Well, it was quite rare to get turned down by anyone in those days. Still is, as a matter of fact." Not that he's been propositioning anyone much lately, of course.

He tilts his head, thinking back to that day. "So you turned me down that day because I was even more insufferable than I normally am?"

He was too preoccupied at the time and immediately afterwards to ever really wonder about it.

"I turned you down because you weren't you." Ianto struggles for a moment to find words for it. "At least, not the you I love. And after that argument we'd had it didn't seem like the right thing to do at the time. I'm not sure how much sense that makes."

Jack considers this for a moment, and then shrugs. "It was a very weird time. What with the Spike stuff and then me feeling angry all the time and then that, I don't think I could really blame you for anything."

His arm tightens around Ianto for a moment. "Let's hope the weirdness passes us both by for a while. I could really do with some normality!" He smiles, against Ianto's hair. "Like this. This is nice."

"When have we ever done normal?" Ianto asks with a light laugh. Then again he aupposes it must reach a point where the unusual becomes normal because that's all they deal with. Everything is a matter of perspective.

"This is nice, though," He agrees, resting his head against Jack's shoulder as they sway. The beach, the lights, the music. It's all perfect. "We should do things like this more often."

"Eh, normal for us, I meant," Jack smiles, his hand creeping up to stroke Ianto's hair as he enjoys the weight of Ianto's head against his shoulder. "Though apart from the wardens' little games, our life here has been a lot closer to the normal definition of normal than our life back home ever was.

"It kind of makes it hard to want to try and get out. I can't remember ever feeling this content."

"I don't think I've ever been as happy as I am here," It is easy to get used to this place. He would still escape with Jack in a heartbeat if he could. But even with all the chaos and insanity he still likes it here, and the people, too. And speaking of people, "I had an interesting conversation with Spike earlier."

That's... kind of sad, actually, and says a lot about what Ianto's life has been like. It's probably a good thing he immediately moves on, otherwise Jack might get maudlin again.

"Yeah?" He lifts his eyebrows, curious. "What about?"

It's true his life hasn't been the happiest but Jack makes it better. He always has. And existing here with him, with none of the danger or fear he always had to deal with back home, it's perfect.

"A surprising number of things. But I don't think he'll be attacking us again any time soon. It was odd talking to him, but also reassuring." In fact he suspects they might be almost friends now, but he's not about to admit it even to himself.

"Reassuring?" He can't help being a little sceptical at that. "I thought you couldn't stand him because - you know, the John thing?"

And the biting thing, of course. And everything else that's happened between them.

"True, I still plan on averting my eyes during every encounter for that exact reason," Even with all the biting he never disliked Spike as much as he loathes John. Probably because Spike never slept with Jack, not that he would admit to being jealous. "I suppose I meant reassured in the sense that I don't think he'll be attacking us again. The soul really did work after all."

Jack chuckles. He does, actually, understand Ianto's loathing of John. John's very good at rubbing people up the wrong way, and he did it in style with Ianto. Spike has unexpectedly turned out to be a little less coarse than John.

Plus there's the sleeping with Jack thing, though honestly? He totally would have fucked Spike at the start if Spike had let him.

That's well in the past now, though. A lot of water under the bridge since then. He nods. "Yeah, it really did. I never was completely sure it would work, but yeah." He gives Ianto a slightly ashamed glance. "That day I stormed out after the timeslip thing... I ended up sparring with Spike. He was way more in control than I was, at that point."

"He helped me look for you when your younger self wandered off as well." It really does remind him of Owen, who Ianto had never really gotten along with but whose relationship had improved dramatically once he'd died. Maybe some people just need a dramatic change to make them tolerable. Or maybe that dramatic change makes him feel bad for them and willing to give them a second chance.

"Yeah?" He thinks back, something he hasn't really done yet, seeing the Spike his younger self met that day, but through his own, older, eyes. "He was different too that day, wasn't he? Older. A lot more at peace."

Ianto is surprised to find himself reluctant to answer. Knowing Spike dies has made him a lot more sympathetic to the vampire. It's not something he thinks Jack can really understand his fear of, at least not in the same way. And if Spike hasn't told him he must not want to. It's not a secret, exactly, but it's something he can understand wanting to keep private. So he's vague in his answer. "He said he got his soul back on his own in that future. I think that's why."

"Well, we already knew that happened, didn't we?" he replies somewhat absently, studying Ianto, intrigued by that faint hesitation. Then he shrugs, and thinks about Spike instead. "I suppose that would account for how much more together he was that day. Let's just hope it sticks as well here. Especially considering it may very well have been only a virtual soul anyway!"

"The virtual nature of this place really does raise more questions than it answers, doesn't it?@ Iabto remarks, glad for a change of subject. "If nothing that happens here is real do injuries or scars - or souls for that matter - translate to our physical bodies?" He hadn't checked the scar on his neck from Jack's temporary vampire teeth at the time. There had been too many other things to investigate and he hadn't thought of it.
