Day 300 - Evening Anniversary Mingle
The festival continues. The dome's "sun" begins to set and the the sky is painted in gradually darkening shades until all is dark beyond the warm glow of the lanterns and sparkling of the colored lights on the rides and booths.

The speakers high above on the floating island begin to play soft, instrumental music and the dark dome flickers to life once more as projections of landscapes light the sky. They fade in and out every few minutes with images of cityscapes, deserts, seasides, mountain ranges in shades of futuristic, ancient, post-apocalyptic, foreign, and outer space. It may seem like a random assortment at first, but then the scene shifts again and just might take your breath away as you recognize what you're seeing. No people. No animals. But the landmarks are all there. It's a place you grew up or lived or worked or fought for or died at, and then it's gone again, fading into someone else's memory. Sometimes the scene is distinctly autumn-themed. Sometimes it isn't.

After an hour or so the scene shows another sunset and the sky goes dark aside from the sparkling of a starscape. New lanterns are lit leading a path to the beach where there's a large white open-style tent with a dance floor, the ceiling strewn with fairy lights. Flames light the fire pits and there are several cozy resting areas set up with plush cushions and thick candles half-buried in the sand for light. The music takes on more variety and life, perfectly suitable to dancing. Refreshments are available for those who've yet had their fill or simply need a moment to cool off away from the dance floor for a moment.

See something you like?

[ Haruka hasn't seen this guy in a while, herself. She joins him in contemplation of the Wardens' latest little stunt, though for her part she prefers to stand. ]

[Phanan grins, scooting over anyway in case she changes her mind about sitting.] The one with the space ships. It was an Imperial cruiser my squadron commandeered and posed as the crew of for awhile. Elaborate scheme, long story, the usual. What about you? Any scenes from home?

[ That sounds like an interesting ploy indeed - from one person who's apparently faked out the enemy to another. Haruka shrugs and looks back up at the sky. ] I haven't really been looking.

[ Home is boring anyway. Ah.

She pulls in a breath as a shot of Earth from space slips by, the moon glowing like a white pearl against the backdrop of space. If that's her Earth, Wardens, that's low.

Haruka thinks big picture even with her nostalgia. ]

[Don't think he doesn't catch that reaction. He's sharper than he lets on.] That's your planet? Nice view. Do you spend a lot of time in space?

[ Haruka chuckles. This lifetime or the last one? ] Not lately.

[ She looks away anyway. ]

Still a nice view. [He knows when not to push, but he'll wait for another opportunity and try asking again. There's a view of some mountains, a city he doesn't know, then there's a very familiar one and he grins. It's a weird reaction to have staring at what's essentially a short tunnel through the middle of a mined out asteroid. Storage containers that have been repurposed into rooms line both walls. The one used for dining has holes for windows cut out of it and green spraypaint out front to provide a padio space. A fluffy toy Ewok in an orange jumpsuit is sitting at one of the padio tables, set up with a cup of caff like he's having a drink. Up above it all are strung twinkling lights that make the ceiling look like stars and leave the whole thing a little reminiscent of the Death Star trench run, which is what they were going for.]

Mine again. This time we're pretending to be pirates.

[ Wow. Even without context that's...that's some setup. ] You've lived a storied life.

[ She takes a thoughtful breath, watching the display. ] This place must be even duller for you.

Actually I kind of like the vacation, even if it is boring with fewer explosions. What about you? I get the impression you're not too happy here.

Didn't you go through the doors?

[ Come to think of it, it's unlikely the whole population would have gone exploring. To each their own, really. ]

[ Haruka tilts her head up to get a really good look at whatever's flickering across the sky now. That or to not be looking at Phanan. ] You could say that.

[ You could also say she opened it. But she'd rather keep Haruka Tenoh and Sailor Uranus separate, if possible. ]

[ Haruka thinks carefully before answering this one. The guy does honestly seem to want to know, and thus she doesn't want to keep blowing off his queries. But answering means knowing what she thinks, too, and she's been trying not to get bogged down in that.

Her voice is measured when she finally speaks. ]
I don't see how we're supposed to compete with something like that.

[ Which is of course the point. But she's not going to lay down and accept captivity because of it. ]

Ah, now that's an interesting way of looking at things. [He glances down from the sky at her, eye glowing red in the fading light.] Get me back in that place knowing what I know about it now and I can have a so crazy it just might work escape plan running in two minutes. That's what I do. So it's not the how that bothers me, specifically. It's the why. [A pause, then, more seriously and levely than before,] I like it here. For the first time in years I don't feel like I need to find a reason to want to stay alive. Yes it's all in our heads and I'm on vacation in a virtual reality instead of fighting bad guys like I should be, but I'm happy here, and it's been a long time since I can say that about myself.

Hm. [ That point - that some people might be happier living away from their home worlds - has occurred to her dimly on occasion but this is the first time Haruka's heard it really explained. Right, her experiences are only one person's, even she wouldn't mind this so much if it weren't for her mission (plus the principle of the thing), and yet... ]

Even if this whole place is a lie? [ She doesn't sound judgmental. Just curious. He'd touched on it so she has a hunch she knows the answer to this one, but she wants to hear it. ]

I spend most of my time lying about things anyway. It doesn't bother me too much. Reality hasn't exactly worked out too well for me, as you may have noticed. [Before coming here he would have lied about that. He hopes that's a good change.] You don't strike me as the type to be happy in a prison, though.

[ She snorts, but it's amused. ] Don't go gossiping, now.

[ Point taken, though. Haruka watches the display without really paying attention to it. ] I'll keep in mind some people want to stay.

[ You know, when she manages to singlehandedly defy the Warden system, disrupt the status quo, and make it back to her world. That goal even she knows is totally ludicrous. When all that happens. ]

I'm sure no one else noticed. [He grins, then adds thoughtfully,] I guess it would depend on what happens after we escape. If we just get sent back to our own worlds then I'll opt out. But if we get to choose what we do or who we stay with? Well that would be a different story.

[ Ah. She won't pry, but. Ah. ] Just don't interfere.

[ You wouldn't like her when she's crossed, but it doesn't sound like that's what you have in mind. Otherwise they wouldn't still be talking. ]

We'll see. [ Haruka tilts her head up, but doesn't eye any scenes in particular. She's had quite enough feeling sorry for herself. Doesn't achieve anything anyway.

So she clears her throat and looks over at the refreshments. ]
Need a refill?
