Day 300 - Evening Anniversary Mingle
The festival continues. The dome's "sun" begins to set and the the sky is painted in gradually darkening shades until all is dark beyond the warm glow of the lanterns and sparkling of the colored lights on the rides and booths.

The speakers high above on the floating island begin to play soft, instrumental music and the dark dome flickers to life once more as projections of landscapes light the sky. They fade in and out every few minutes with images of cityscapes, deserts, seasides, mountain ranges in shades of futuristic, ancient, post-apocalyptic, foreign, and outer space. It may seem like a random assortment at first, but then the scene shifts again and just might take your breath away as you recognize what you're seeing. No people. No animals. But the landmarks are all there. It's a place you grew up or lived or worked or fought for or died at, and then it's gone again, fading into someone else's memory. Sometimes the scene is distinctly autumn-themed. Sometimes it isn't.

After an hour or so the scene shows another sunset and the sky goes dark aside from the sparkling of a starscape. New lanterns are lit leading a path to the beach where there's a large white open-style tent with a dance floor, the ceiling strewn with fairy lights. Flames light the fire pits and there are several cozy resting areas set up with plush cushions and thick candles half-buried in the sand for light. The music takes on more variety and life, perfectly suitable to dancing. Refreshments are available for those who've yet had their fill or simply need a moment to cool off away from the dance floor for a moment.

[Beyond the lights and festivities of the tenth, beyond the life and heartbeat, there is the beach. The dark waters hitting the sands can barely be heard with the goings on from the tenth, but can still be seen. It is odd, how something so swelling and dangerous, so vast, could lie just beyond something so vibrant.
Gwen has placed herself on one of the cushions. Her hands are wrapped together in her lap as she watches the waves swell and sink in the distant. They're not even real. Perhaps there is a machine, deep down under the ocean that is not an ocean, that is making it move. Must be it. Must be.]

[Ianto finds a seat next to her on a cushion. Even though he's gone for jeans rather than a suit today he's still careful to avoid the sand.]

Not in a festive mood? [He's a bit surprised. This seems like her sort of thing. Then again, she is looking exceptionally thoughtful tonight. Maybe there's more going on than he knows.]

Did you see it?

[Of course it's Ianto. Who else could it be? His voice hurts her in a way it should not, but the image on the sky has burnt into her and her hands clutch together, the knuckles whitening. His familiar voice makes it so much worse.]

When they showed all those pictures, the images... Did you see it? It was Cardiff Bay, The Millenium Wall... Clear as day, right there. Just... There you know? Just hanging in the sky.

[He nods.] I saw it. [It hadn't hurt nearly as much as he had expected it to, but perhaps that's where they differ most. She's never going to be able to stop missing home and what she's left behind, whereas he is continually surprised at how easy it was for him to walk away from it all. He's happier here than he ever was at Torchwood. Maybe more than he ever was anywhere.]

They had something like this on day 200, right after I arrived. It's hard to believe I've been here that long. I guess I don't really miss it much.

Christ. Why would they show that? Are they just... Mocking us?

[It had been bright daylight in the image. Bright, sparkling daylight. An image of Rhys with ice cream on his stupid face cuts through her and air that a moment ago entered her naturally seems solid and unfamiliar.]

One hundred days?! Ianto, that's... God that's...

[Like a calender they are shown before her, one hundred days just ripping away, seconds and minutes, hours and days, stacked neatly in a pile. Her jaws press together and a taste of metall rises in her mouth.]

No.

103, if you want to be precise. [He always wants to be precise. One hundred and three days, some of them wonderful, some that he doesn't care to remember. It is a long time, when he looks back on it. His hand finds hers, giving it a friendly squeeze and for a moment they might be back on the battered old couch in the Hub, just talking.]

I don't mind it here, but then again I never loved what we do the way you do. As for why they're showing us, I don't know. It might be mocking. Or maybe they're trying to be kind, in their own way.

You look pensive. Then again, that's not really a new look from what I know of you. [Which isn't much. And that was as close to "hi" as Kitty is getting apparently as she approaches.]

You've had the pleasure of meeting me in my most charming moments.

[Gwen looks at her and grins. It's rather pleasing to see her face actually. Gwen doesn't know a lot of people here, and she doesn't know Kitty very well, and somehow she has still managed to tell her more about herself than to anyone. Mainly bad things though.]

How are you Kitty?

I will take your word for it.

[For the moment the seatings around her are empty. Gesturing against one of the seats a smile curls her mouth.]

Would you like to sit?

It's one of my favorite positions up there with standing and lying down. [She does this much admired sitting thing.]

Seen anything familiar or is that a bad topic?

I saw the millenium building in Cardiff.

[Her eyes drift, towards the place where she had seen the much remembered landmark.]

Did you see something? Up there? Was there some part of you up there?

[Fill the emptyness of a shaken skull with something that has no connection with her.]

Yeah. There was one of Chicago. It was the city that looked decimated. Smoldering. Broken. You know, generally cheerful like it should be on a post card.

They don't care much about our rights and they probably have a reason. Hard to say if it's as good-natured as they want us to think it is. [She'd bet against it.]

If I was going to believe in hopelessness I would have done it a long time ago. Not in a prison with a beach and all you can eat restaurants.

Pets in cages have feed bowls.

[Her nostrils flare, anger making her heart race.]

I'm sorry. I must be a bit of a.. Downer, is the word right?

Don't worry about it. I know it's just a prettier cage than most. Kind of why we work on the whole getting out and shutting it down thing.
