day 241 | voice/action
[Arriving at a strange place isn't new to Catherine Halsey. Her life has been full of odd occurrences and this shouldn't be any different. But it is, more mysterious than anything else she's been through. Prison? Again. Not rightfully so; hasn't she served her time? Hasn't she suffered enough, properly atoned without being put in a jumpsuit?]

This isn't the chain gang...

[It's muttered as she fumbles with the device, starting up a voice communication.]

To anyone who is listening: An explanation would be helpful, something more relevant than what I've received, a detailing of events and the essence of this situation. Additionally... [She pauses.] ...if anyone is near gardens and a series of greenhouses, I require physical assistance as well.

[Because newly arrived, stolen away only minutes after her life-saving amputation, she is now stuck in a greenhouse with a rather stubborn door.

At least the view is nice...?]

And I, a gentleman am supposed to know where a womans clothing store is and so you are judging my intelligence based on such an arbitrary thing?

[OUTWARD SIGH.]

And you should, Helen has a rather vast knowledge of such things. She's been alive long enough. [Huff huff.]

[Seriously, bro.

1) She just lost an arm.
2) She probably didn't NEED to lose that arm.
3) And now she's back in prison.

She's a little testy and stubborn right now.]

You were the one who brought the clothing up. I'm judging the fact that you didn't consider, before you spoke, that you had little ideas what you were talking about.

[Rly sis.

1) They're doing this entirely by voice.
2) He's not a mind reader so he doesn't know these things.
3) And his lady friend who isn't his lady friend but is instead in love with a Frenchman came into his apartment to cry over the Frenchman.

He's grumpy, stubborn and doesn't take being called stupid well.

And you know hasn't figured out how to lock conversations on this thing yet...
]

And yet can't someone say they know it's around and yet not know it's location? I never claimed I knew where it was, simply that it was here by observing the people around me.

[Plz. As if his ladyfriend problems are any concern of hers. Even if she knew, she wouldn't care.

She never called him stupid... HOWEVER:]

One can, yes, but it makes them look vaguely like an ass.

[A pause.]

I think I'll go observe on my own now.

[Plz totally her problem now that she's got him talking.

HOWEVER. That makes him you know do this just verbally with you know "Did she really just say that???" noises and for anyone paying attention to him talking to her they can tell he's you know, shocked.

And he's just going to stare at the device for a moment so there's some dead air AND THEN...
]

Perhaps you should learn to watch your language around strangers, you'd find people more willing to help.

I'll keep that in mind the next time this happens to me.

[As. if. she. cares. She doesn't curse often, but when she does... well, you know she means business.

But seriously, she sounds like she couldn't care less if she tried.]

[You know, if he hadn't dealt with future Helen then he'd be more flabergasted at her attitude towards this. But he has so he's just sighing.

And so totally not afraid to argue back.
]

It's a valuable lesson for the future, even here. People tend to be more accepting of your word if you watch your words and tone, miss, unless of course your time is so far backwards as to make the dark ages look pleasant.

I have quite had my fill of being polite to people at this moment in time. You're a victim of circumstance.

[And his own non-helpfulness, but... details.]

And I am no "miss". I'm a doctor.

Of course.

[He totally doesn't believe her.]

Well then doctor, what are you a doctor of exactly? [Maybe something sort of you know neutral to talk about.]

[He started it.]

Medicine. [A pause.] Bioengineering, mechanical engineering, physics, biology, and translight sciences.

[No no, she clearly did.]

Translight sciences? [Now he's curious and it shows. He knows, or can guess, at the others. Or knows he can ask Helen about them but that one is well, different.] What precisely do you mean by that?

[He replied. Therefore, he started it.]

The science of translight travel, time-space theory, etc.

[She said the thing to start this entirely, she started it.]

I'm sorry, doctor, but I'm a bit behind the times when it comes to such things. [You know by a good 1000 years or so.]

Are you saying you've studied the theory behind traveling in space? [That's not time travel, he knows a bit about that. This is totally different.

And okay he may sound a little in awe here.

[...This devolved into something she didn't expect.

There's a pause as she considers things, then speaks rather warily. Where did this mood shift come from?]

I have studied it and utilized it for a variety of purposes, yes.

[A very fascinated Victorian hearing about space travel being possible for the first time.

No that's really it.

Only when they say something of interest, even if they are infuriating at first.

[Because you know, he's not going to not acknowledge it.]

But would you be interested in, at perhaps another time when you are settled, in continuing it? Perhaps over tea or another drink?

[You can not cockblock him learning about the future damn it.]

[She can cockblock whatever and whoever she wants.]

I'm not at all interested. You'll have to do better than this if you actually want me to take you seriously. Going from sharp-tongued to complimentary in ten seconds flat is less than impressive.

[Sigh. Though it's all inward as his voice loses a bit of warmth at that.]

I'm sorry I've taken such an interest in your work. And if that's complimentary then I'd hate to see the size of your ego, I'm rather certain it could rival that of a certain friend of mine. [He's actually taking being shot down rather well really...]

[Give him fifty years and a device that has to be built for him because he nearly dies of like the flu, and then he'll get it. Or you know remind him John escaped under his nose during the entire Ripper thing.]

If I wasn't I would not have asked about it. You'll have to forgive a man from 1898 to be curious of such things, most of which is well beyond what I know of even now.

I would suggest you be a little more respectful yourself, if you're going to interrogate someone, especially when they've only just arrived and have more important things to do than to tell you their life story. Unless you're offering food, shelter, and a physician, this conversation is over.

I'm only as respectful to people as they are to me. [So this is all her fault.] I can offer all three, and before you ask, the food is in my apartment which is the shelter and I am myself a physician. Though Dr. Magnus is a better one then myself, at least until I am better acquainted with her modern medical practices.

What a shame that I don't go to the homes of strange men. I believe I've spoken with Dr. Magnus, and I'll take her modern services over anything Victorian.

At least some practices haven't changed, even in the future. [Not going to rise to the bait of that though.] Although, you'd be taking such services from a Victorian very much out of her era, do remember that before you push aside Victorian ideas.

[Please note he knows his medical knowledge is out of date. Just you know, feels the desire to point out Helen is well, older then she lets on or something. IDK James is an idiot and a show off and he hates losing.]
