day 241 | voice/action
[Arriving at a strange place isn't new to Catherine Halsey. Her life has been full of odd occurrences and this shouldn't be any different. But it is, more mysterious than anything else she's been through. Prison? Again. Not rightfully so; hasn't she served her time? Hasn't she suffered enough, properly atoned without being put in a jumpsuit?]

This isn't the chain gang...

[It's muttered as she fumbles with the device, starting up a voice communication.]

To anyone who is listening: An explanation would be helpful, something more relevant than what I've received, a detailing of events and the essence of this situation. Additionally... [She pauses.] ...if anyone is near gardens and a series of greenhouses, I require physical assistance as well.

[Because newly arrived, stolen away only minutes after her life-saving amputation, she is now stuck in a greenhouse with a rather stubborn door.

At least the view is nice...?]

I would suggest you be a little more respectful yourself, if you're going to interrogate someone, especially when they've only just arrived and have more important things to do than to tell you their life story. Unless you're offering food, shelter, and a physician, this conversation is over.

I'm only as respectful to people as they are to me. [So this is all her fault.] I can offer all three, and before you ask, the food is in my apartment which is the shelter and I am myself a physician. Though Dr. Magnus is a better one then myself, at least until I am better acquainted with her modern medical practices.

What a shame that I don't go to the homes of strange men. I believe I've spoken with Dr. Magnus, and I'll take her modern services over anything Victorian.

At least some practices haven't changed, even in the future. [Not going to rise to the bait of that though.] Although, you'd be taking such services from a Victorian very much out of her era, do remember that before you push aside Victorian ideas.

[Please note he knows his medical knowledge is out of date. Just you know, feels the desire to point out Helen is well, older then she lets on or something. IDK James is an idiot and a show off and he hates losing.]

[...Hates losing? He's talking to the worst loser ever. She won't even handle losing at 20 Questions with grace.]

If I didn't have to ask for help, I wouldn't. But she's been more gracious a host than you, and I believe we are meeting now.

[Him too. Ugh, they really are waay to similar.]

Helen always is, she would sooner sit on a bed of nails then let someone go without aide. Not that someone like you would understand that.

[WOW JAMES way to be a hypocrite.]

You know nothing about me.

[For certain people, she would do anything. More than anything.]

[And yet as far as he can tell she's well...]

I could say a great deal about you, how your ego feeds your pride in admitting when you are wrong and in preventing you from even so much as acting polite when someone is interested in your work. How you think yourself above everyone when you don't even know who they are.

Yes, I know nothing about you.

[Pride. Ego. He knows nothing of the depths of those, how they've been destroyed and rebuilt so precariously and carefully that she's grown an emotional shell to rival any armor she produced. Of course she won't act polite when she's been wronged. Of course she won't be civil.]

At least I'm not some ill-tempered Cheshire cat. Accuse me all you'd like of being egotistical and prideful. Even if you're right, it doesn't matter. You don't know anything about me.

Maybe you think you're being interesting right now. That by somehow showing your cards, you'll get me to miraculously forgive and forget, and let you interrogate me about things you have no business yet knowing, and at this rate you never will know. I wasn't born yesterday. I won't spill my secrets to you or anyone.

[She is so lucky he knows that reference otherwise he would be stumbling along through it. But he doesn't know these things so he's going by what he knows now.]

If you think me some Cheshire cat then you truly don't know me. And I don't, in fact I have far more then you more than likely and yet I'm not interrogating you, I could easily do so however, if you would prefer.

[Yeah. She hates him.]

Ask questions that won't get any answers? Surely you're more intelligent than that. Or am I giving you too much credit again?

Go on. Do whatever you'd like. I've been interrogated by worse.

[ helen just got back from making another batch of tea and now she's just going to quietly set the tea down, walk up behind james and snatch his communicator off his ear. ]

Even though I can only hear half of this conversation, I don't think this is the time to have such a [ territorial and/or strength ] display. I do apologize [ whoever's on the other end here ] for the inconvenience.

[ the inconvenience being the fact that she's just turned off the communicator and thrown it across the room. hope you weren't expecting to use it again today, james. ]
