[Day 237] FAMILY ISSUES GROUP THERAPY MINGLE
[Anyone brought to this group will find that there are tables set up around the perimeter of the room, one with snacks and drinks, some even with art supplies on them, while the chairs are all pushed into a circle in the middle. There is a projector set up to one side and it flashes images every so often onto the wall. Images of children, adults, the elderly with the young--some of them more formal, posed, others candid as the brief moments of life they were. Some of these images might even be familiar to certain inmates. It shouldn't be hard for them to pick out their own families after all.

In the center of the circle of chairs is a table with a large bowl of treats, wrapped candies of various sorts. Hard candies, caramels, chocolates, taffy. Beside the bowl is a set of cards with instructions written on the back of them.

"Select a card and read the question aloud to the group. Whoever answers the question gets to choose a reward from the bowl and then select the next card. Continue until all of the cards have been viewed or the bowl is empty. More than one person can answer--the first to respond gets to select the next card. If no one volunteers, the card picker gets to select a person."

The cards themselves have a variety of questions and tasks, but they all have a very similar theme.]

1. What does "family" mean to you?
2. Draw a picture of your family and describe it to the group.
3. What is your ideal family unit?
4. Do you have any siblings? If so, what are they like? If not, what would you do if you found out you had one you had never met before?
5. Have you ever done something to hurt or upset a member of your family on purpose?
6. What is the strongest memory you have of your mother and/or father?
7. Imitate one of your parents when reprimanding you.
8. Have you ever felt like an outsider in your family?
9. What is something you have done to a member of your family or they had done to you that took a long time to move beyond (if ever)?
10. Who are you closest to in your family?
11. How many close family members have you lost?

{OOC: Mingle! These questions are not the only ones. Feel free to come up with more. Also the candy in the bowl is spiked just like the pastries and coffee, so the more characters eat...you get the picture.}

Why would I want to borrow your question when you seem to be enjoying it.

[ that's okay. liz can play dirty and mean sometimes when she has to. right now? definitely something she doesn't feel like answering it. so that bus must really enjoy going back and forth a bit. ]

[He's not. Really.] No. I insist. You haven't been here long. You need to experience these fun events. This is a perfect opportunity.

And watching everyone else deal with it isn't experiencing it enough? [ you all need to re-evaluate your definition of fun. ]

I'm a twin. My younger brother says he felt closer to me when his actions caused me pain. He conspired with a pureblood vampire to get revenge against our vampire hunter parents and destroy my life. They murdered our parents and then they just walked away, leaving me to bleed to death.

We were 12. I didn't die. I was just left alone.

[Stupid refreshments. He hands you the slip.]

Your turn.

[ she stares at it like it's grown a head. ]

Someone close to me became the one thing I was trying to protect her from.

[ her daughter got turned into a vampire. granted, it made caroline much more capable of handling the world, but at the same time, liz never wanted that life for her. she never wanted her only child to die. ]

[Oh. How ironic.]

Same here. Joke was on me though--she actually had been one all along. Just hidden as a human.

[ she knows that one all too well. for half a year, caroline had hidden that part of herself from her mother. ]

And then you have to spend a long time trying to deal with that, knowing what they are, reconciling it with the person you love.

[Oh. Ouch. That was a direct hit.]

Convincing yourself they died and that the person that took over their body is just a walking corpse. Yet being unable to cut those ties because they still talk and act exactly the same.

Always struggling with the feelings you have toward the person--and the environment you grew up in that ingrained in you that they are evil and should be killed. Yet when you try to pull the trigger on that person, you never can.

[ liz has to fight the tears welling up in her eyes. she has to be strong through this, even if what he's saying is exactly what she went through with caroline. ]

Because every time you look at them, you still see the person you love first. It's almost as if you have to be forced to see the good in them again, but if it's that one person you really care about... then maybe it's possible. Maybe it's possible to love them and understand what they went through, to accept them for who they are, not what they've become.

[ she might still be trying to convince herself of that, but at least it's a lot better than it used to be. she doesn't go for the 'stake first, ask questions later' approach anymore. ]

[It's hard to miss, honestly. Zero himself is shocked at the similarities in their experiences and feelings toward their loved ones.]

It was not an easy journey to get to that point. I made a lot of mistakes and left some very large emotional scars. Not only that, I nearly destroyed myself in my complete denial. The damage done wasn't just to myself either, in the end she needed hope and something to live for and I chose my personal path of self-induced torture.

My stubbornness and refusal to face the truth left her without a choice but to remove herself completely from
my memories to ensure I would be okay once she was gone from the world--which is what she planned on doing next.

I managed to retrieve my memories here--but for home--it isn't that easy. I may never get the opportunity--she might already be gone. She did her best to protect me even if I was so cruel to her...

[ it's uncanny and liz is actually very curious about zero. sometime she might like to talk to him more, see how much they have in common in a more private setting.

little does she know that caroline actually compelled her to forget three entire days because she was afraid liz wouldn't be able to cope. now they know better. ]

Now you know better. You have a chance here and I'm sure she appreciates what you're doing here. Mine... I didn't accept it until I absolutely had to. We were in a bad situation and she proved, in the heat of the moment, that she was still the person I knew she was. No, she'd become more than that. She's stronger now. She has a purpose.

I don't know what things would come at home, but at least here I can be sure she's safe.

I'm sure she's grateful you can accept it now too. It's hard to go against something so ingrained.

[But he can't help adding...]

It's also okay not to trust all of them, either. Even with people, there are good and bad. It's just the natural instincts of vampires to obtain what they need and desire--it just depends on how they go about it.

I'll have to take your word for that.

[ because while she might be willing to talk about the basics of their situation, she's not yet ready to admit to strangers that her daughter got turned under her nose. and she knows caroline is one of the good ones, someone who doesn't deserve the prejudice that comes with the label "vampire." ]

But thank you. This has been... educational.
