[Day 237] FAMILY ISSUES GROUP THERAPY MINGLE
[Anyone brought to this group will find that there are tables set up around the perimeter of the room, one with snacks and drinks, some even with art supplies on them, while the chairs are all pushed into a circle in the middle. There is a projector set up to one side and it flashes images every so often onto the wall. Images of children, adults, the elderly with the young--some of them more formal, posed, others candid as the brief moments of life they were. Some of these images might even be familiar to certain inmates. It shouldn't be hard for them to pick out their own families after all.

In the center of the circle of chairs is a table with a large bowl of treats, wrapped candies of various sorts. Hard candies, caramels, chocolates, taffy. Beside the bowl is a set of cards with instructions written on the back of them.

"Select a card and read the question aloud to the group. Whoever answers the question gets to choose a reward from the bowl and then select the next card. Continue until all of the cards have been viewed or the bowl is empty. More than one person can answer--the first to respond gets to select the next card. If no one volunteers, the card picker gets to select a person."

The cards themselves have a variety of questions and tasks, but they all have a very similar theme.]

1. What does "family" mean to you?
2. Draw a picture of your family and describe it to the group.
3. What is your ideal family unit?
4. Do you have any siblings? If so, what are they like? If not, what would you do if you found out you had one you had never met before?
5. Have you ever done something to hurt or upset a member of your family on purpose?
6. What is the strongest memory you have of your mother and/or father?
7. Imitate one of your parents when reprimanding you.
8. Have you ever felt like an outsider in your family?
9. What is something you have done to a member of your family or they had done to you that took a long time to move beyond (if ever)?
10. Who are you closest to in your family?
11. How many close family members have you lost?

{OOC: Mingle! These questions are not the only ones. Feel free to come up with more. Also the candy in the bowl is spiked just like the pastries and coffee, so the more characters eat...you get the picture.}

[ i. entry ]

[ The android corralled by the bots - there would be something humorous to be found in this, for some people. But Data arrives, and examines the room. The art supplies, the chairs, the treats, the slides. The slides are of some interest - there are no images of his family together on there, but the sharp-eyed may notice a human man that looks very much like Data. Or perhaps you see an image of Data with someone startlingly - well, identical. There is also a third image, of Data and an unknown young lady. He has certainly taken note of these images - the first he observes without any visible objection, though the second garners a dark and somewhat troubled frown. The last of them draws a different sort of frown, softer and sad with a furrowed brow accompanying it. ]

[ ii . discussion ]

[ Despite the emotional response caused by some of the images shown, Data goes along with things for the most part. Certainly there are things he'd prefer not to discuss, but he's already more comfortable sharing than most. The topic is of some interest - an aspect of humanity with which he can readily identify. So when he's up, he takes a card and reads the text. ]

"Who are you closest to in your family?"

[ A small quirk of his brow, and a tightening of his lips as his head tilts to one side slightly. ]

The only living member of my family is my mother. I did not know that she existed until three years ago; however, we now correspond regularly. I believe that I have succeeded in establishing a functional familial relationship with her.

[ Which is notable, for the record. ]

Droids have family?

[A rude thing to say probably, but Helix doesn't bother with such things and he's curious.]

[ Data doesn't take it as being too rude, at least, since he can understand the curiosity. For many, the concept of family is based in biology, and he clearly lacks biology. ]

While I cannot speak for all androids, I do. I was of course built rather than born, but the humans who created me did consider me to be their son.

Huh. Makes sense I guess. Not unheard of, but some of the people who consider machines to be their kids are a little wacko.

[Shrug.]

Guess for some it's the only way they can have kids. You're still creating something.

I do consider myself to be a person rather than merely a machine - though if that is called into question, I am certain that my opinion on the matter is not relevant.

Regardless, they are my family, and they hold a great deal of importance for me.

[ his choice of words and phrasing is certainly... different. she won't judge until she's gotten to know him better, but she is definitely curious. ]

It's nice that you got the chance to meet her at all.

[ she can't imagine what it would be like if caroline didn't know she existed or didn't want to even speak with her. they'd come close to the latter once and liz never wanted that to happen again. ]

[ He gives a small nod. He certainly agrees - despite any uncertainty, he is grateful for what family he does have. ]

I am most grateful to have had the opportunity, and for the relationship we have fostered.

As a mother myself, I'm sure yours was very happy to have the chance, too. I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't see or talk to my daughter.

I am certain that it would be most difficult for a mother who has been consistently present and active in her child's life - and for the child as well. The bond between a parent and child is a particularly strong psychological development.

[ Various human bonds are of great interest to him, after all. Also of interest is her phrasing when present within the facility - the implication being that her daughter is here. Theoretically, it's possible that she's only referring to her life prior to being brought here, but the way she speaks makes that seem unlikely. He doesn't pry - yet. He certainly will, because he is Data. ]

[ he'd be right. liz's daughter is here in the prison. liz isn't sure which group caroline got assigned to, but she's certain she's around here somewhere. ]

When the parent and child get along, yeah, it is.

[ which begs the question of when they didn't get along. liz can still remember those days. they weren't that long ago. ]

Have you and your daughter experienced difficulty in getting along?

I understand that is a most common difficulty. I am certain that it does not reflect on your ability to parent.

[ He frowns a bit. ]

If I may inquire - is your daughter present in the facility?

Ah.

[ A nod. ]

I do not believe I have had the pleasure. Though I do believe that if either of you must be here, then it is fortunate that you are both present. While I cannot say being imprisoned is ever desirable, I believe it is made far more bearable by the presence of those for whom one cares most.

You're probably right. She's been here longer than I have, but I'm glad I can... be here at all for her. Hopefully, you've got someone familiar here, too.

[ A small nod. ] Thank you.

However, it is worth noting that she has not been entirely lost; I was able to save her memories and programming, preserving her experiences and growth. In that sense, I have kept her with me.

[That still sounds lonely to Euphie, but it is something.] That's important. The memories I mean. Yours of her too. [She is no stranger to loss.]

[And maybe this part should go unsaid, but today is not the day for things passing unsaid.] Maybe in a place like this you'll be able to see her again.

[ He actually had not considered that; he tilts his head slightly, absorbing the possibility. ]

I suppose that is possible... however, it is unlikely that I would be able to prevent her from meeting the same fate.

[ This visibly troubles him; lowering his gaze, he shakes his head slightly to clear it. An opportunity to change the topic presents itself as he glances up to the projected images as they cycle through to Euphie's. ]

Ah - it would seem that you are represented, as well.

[She was clearly about to ask more, but she hesitates when he brings up her own photos. It isn't that she wants to talk about them more, but she realizes it may be too difficult for him to continue, so her lips close again, and she nods.] I'm with some of my siblings there when we were all together.
