[Day 237] FAMILY ISSUES GROUP THERAPY MINGLE
[Anyone brought to this group will find that there are tables set up around the perimeter of the room, one with snacks and drinks, some even with art supplies on them, while the chairs are all pushed into a circle in the middle. There is a projector set up to one side and it flashes images every so often onto the wall. Images of children, adults, the elderly with the young--some of them more formal, posed, others candid as the brief moments of life they were. Some of these images might even be familiar to certain inmates. It shouldn't be hard for them to pick out their own families after all.

In the center of the circle of chairs is a table with a large bowl of treats, wrapped candies of various sorts. Hard candies, caramels, chocolates, taffy. Beside the bowl is a set of cards with instructions written on the back of them.

"Select a card and read the question aloud to the group. Whoever answers the question gets to choose a reward from the bowl and then select the next card. Continue until all of the cards have been viewed or the bowl is empty. More than one person can answer--the first to respond gets to select the next card. If no one volunteers, the card picker gets to select a person."

The cards themselves have a variety of questions and tasks, but they all have a very similar theme.]

1. What does "family" mean to you?
2. Draw a picture of your family and describe it to the group.
3. What is your ideal family unit?
4. Do you have any siblings? If so, what are they like? If not, what would you do if you found out you had one you had never met before?
5. Have you ever done something to hurt or upset a member of your family on purpose?
6. What is the strongest memory you have of your mother and/or father?
7. Imitate one of your parents when reprimanding you.
8. Have you ever felt like an outsider in your family?
9. What is something you have done to a member of your family or they had done to you that took a long time to move beyond (if ever)?
10. Who are you closest to in your family?
11. How many close family members have you lost?

{OOC: Mingle! These questions are not the only ones. Feel free to come up with more. Also the candy in the bowl is spiked just like the pastries and coffee, so the more characters eat...you get the picture.}

[Has he mentioned how much he's hating these little 'meetings'. If he'd hated it before--the question he just pulled has made it that much worse.]

What is something you have done to a member of your family or that had done to you that took a long time to move beyond (if ever)?

[He's actually throwing a desperate glance at Yuuki. HELP!]

They seriously expect specifics?

[Her fingers reach beneath the table to clasp one of his. The smile she shoots him is apologetic. Maybe he can pick something else? Something different... because she knows where is mind is.]

Headmaster took guardianship of Zero... so while we're not blood related, we can still consider it as family, can't we?

[Pick something about her, Zero. Because even if it's terribly sad it wont be near as painful as what happened between him and his brother.]

[They aren't family. Nice try though.]

We both know I'm not here because of you.

[Not that he wouldn't deserve to be because of that everything that happened. But his familial issues had nothing to do with her.]

My twin and I had quite the...messed up relationship.

You loved each other though.

Just because two people care about each other doesn't mean the relationship is a healthy one.

[Take note, Yuuki. You should know all this by now.]

Sometimes those feelings just make everything worse.

[Sorry, what is a healthy relationship?]

It's confusing to me. If you love someone... I had always thought that should be enough. I mean-- I know. I'm aware that things don't always play out that way.

[A pause...] It's just that I don't understand why a feeling that is pure can become so confused. If you both love one another...

[It's obviously a struggle she's still dealing with too. Although she's genuinely trying to stay on track in regards to him an Ichiru. Still, it's more than easy to see how it relates to her own family problems as well.]

Is it really so 'pure' an emotion though? The dynamics of every relationship are different depending on the needs of each party. Ichiru and I, to outsiders as children, we were inseparable.

[He sighs, thinking back to their childhood and still unable to really grasp how messed up the dynamics truly were.]

I don't know what it is he wanted that I couldn't provide. Was he jealous? Did I not give him enough attention? Did I do enough to show how much I cared? There are a lot of questions I'll never get answered. I don't think he would be able to even if he was here--I'm not sure even he entirely knew it.

[In the end she still wants to believe that the emotion itself is a good one. Something that is in the right place. She's not sure how to describe it.]

I think... [A pause, while she attempts to sort out her thoughts.] I don't think love is impure. What I think, is...sometimes darkness gets in the way.

[It probably doesn't make sense... not outside of her own mind.]

I think that sometimes people truly love someone, but they can't fight off their own demons. And when that happens, something that could have been reason for so much happiness, is destroyed instead.

[No. It makes perfect sense to him. Essentially what had happened with them when she was human too, both their darkness had corrupted everything. He knows that's not what she's talking about though. She's thinking about Kuran.]

Leaves you with a mess to clean up and unable to get rid of those painful attachments.

[And for the first time he's wondering if he's really made the right choice in pursuing this relationship here. Though he's doing better, he knows she's intrenched in darkness still. He's not sure if he can handle yet another destruction of everything.]

[Glancing away she nods, arms wrapping around her waist.]

That kind of thing-- it hurts.

[With a small sigh she reaches out to the table. She supposes it's her turn to draw. Pulling it to her, she reads over it silently, for a moment, before voicing it aloud.]

'What is your ideal family unit?'

[Yes, change subjects. Thank you.]

I don't understand the question. There are parents and kids. Maybe some extended family or teacher if you're lucky but...

[Zero trails off in shock. The projector in the front of the room has been continuously changing pictures, but the one that flashes on screen has stolen his breath for a moment. Heart leaping into his throat, he's too startled and freezes.]

Where did they find that?

[On the screen had flashed a photo of a happy family. Or...rather a set of smiling parents and two kids. One of the kids was clinging to the other with a giant smile on his face--the other appeared almost completely void of emotion. Only one person in the entire group was not smiling at least a little.]

I think-- [But she cuts off, as well. Blinking, she twists arouund to stare up in the direction he's staring, and gasps.]

That...! [It's Zero and Ichiru, obviously. She's on her feet, almost a step already in that direction. The two people within the picture with both of the boys...] Zero's parents...

He also will do just about anything right not to prevent the 'my twin assisted the vampire in turning me and murdering our parents--then made me devour him several years later.' from coming out. I'm a twin. My younger brother says he felt closer to me when his actions caused me pain. He conspired with a pureblood vampire to get revenge against our vampire hunter parents and destroy my life. They murdered our parents and then they just walked away, leaving me to bleed to death.

We were 12. I didn't die. I was just left alone.

[Stupid refreshments. He hands you the slip.]

Your turn.

[ she stares at it like it's grown a head. ]

Someone close to me became the one thing I was trying to protect her from.

[ her daughter got turned into a vampire. granted, it made caroline much more capable of handling the world, but at the same time, liz never wanted that life for her. she never wanted her only child to die. ]

[ she knows that one all too well. for half a year, caroline had hidden that part of herself from her mother. ]

And then you have to spend a long time trying to deal with that, knowing what they are, reconciling it with the person you love.

[Oh. Ouch. That was a direct hit.]

Convincing yourself they died and that the person that took over their body is just a walking corpse. Yet being unable to cut those ties because they still talk and act exactly the same.

Always struggling with the feelings you have toward the person--and the environment you grew up in that ingrained in you that they are evil and should be killed. Yet when you try to pull the trigger on that person, you never can.

[ liz has to fight the tears welling up in her eyes. she has to be strong through this, even if what he's saying is exactly what she went through with caroline. ]

Because every time you look at them, you still see the person you love first. It's almost as if you have to be forced to see the good in them again, but if it's that one person you really care about... then maybe it's possible. Maybe it's possible to love them and understand what they went through, to accept them for who they are, not what they've become.

[ she might still be trying to convince herself of that, but at least it's a lot better than it used to be. she doesn't go for the 'stake first, ask questions later' approach anymore. ]

[It's hard to miss, honestly. Zero himself is shocked at the similarities in their experiences and feelings toward their loved ones.]

It was not an easy journey to get to that point. I made a lot of mistakes and left some very large emotional scars. Not only that, I nearly destroyed myself in my complete denial. The damage done wasn't just to myself either, in the end she needed hope and something to live for and I chose my personal path of self-induced torture.

My stubbornness and refusal to face the truth left her without a choice but to remove herself completely from
my memories to ensure I would be okay once she was gone from the world--which is what she planned on doing next.

I managed to retrieve my memories here--but for home--it isn't that easy. I may never get the opportunity--she might already be gone. She did her best to protect me even if I was so cruel to her...
