day 225 | xiii ❧ potluck mingle!

[ this is her first time doing one of these without gran, and something she thought was going to be difficult for those very reasons is actually rather therapeutic, heartwarming -- a glance back at her roots, back when she was just adele stackhouse's weird granddaughter and not that fae who mingles with vampires. sookie contributes a few dishes from her gran's old recipes, along with something lafayette taught her to make. she's got all the tables in this part of trois park covered with checkered table clothes of varying colors, lots of plastic silverware, paper plates, cups, and napkins at the ready, and a stack of picnic blankets folded up on one of the benches for those who wish to sit on the grass instead of at a table. sookie even brought a long a mesh bag full of sports equipment -- or rather, a couple frisbees, a football, soccer ball, basketball, and even some hacky sacks. (she's not the sports type, but jason would always be off playing something with the other guys.)

hopefully she didn't leave anything out. hopefully this will help cheer everyone up some, both the new arrivals and those still dealing with the days they spent in that other prison. ]

I look forward to it. [ her smile is warm and genuine. she'll be looking forward to spending time with elena, perhaps educating her on procedures and the like. either way, it should prove to be nice. ]

Drinks mostly. It's been longer than I care to admit since I made a dish myself.

[ she'd done some cooking during her 113-year-do-over, but as she's trying to pretend that didn't happen, she has to look to the time before that. in that case, she hasn't done the cooking since her old friend took up his post in 1951. after that she did a few little things... mostly for ashley and none since ashley's death.

but that isn't a topic she wants to go into, so she forces herself back on track. ]

I'm assuming one of these is yours.

[ elena wonders how long that's been, but doesn't ask. instead, she answers, and in a way that's quite pleased with herself. ] The mac 'n' cheese.

[ one of these days they'll have to talk about that. for now, helen smiles in response. ]

From what I've seen so far, that will be a hit. [ it looks good, at any rate. and she may have to have a little taste. ] Remind me when I go back down the line to try some. Have you done much cooking?

[ she smiles. she hopes it's a hit. seems like it has been, at least. ] No, that was mostly my mom's department. She... [ the slight trailing off is because it occurs to elena she doesn't have those recipes anymore. they're at home ] left a book of recipes but it's not the same. [ she smiles at helen, but it's a sad smile. genuine but a little lost. ] My brother and I would usually do take-out, but I think I'm getting better. I've been cooking a lot here. [ some of the benefits of having the time and living with your two best friends. ]

[ she knows she's hit a nerve the moment that look crosses elena's face. it's a look helen knows well, one she's worn several times over the course of her life. she knows the sorrow of loss all too well and it saddens her that someone as young and kind as elena knows that pain. she would never wish it on anyone.

for a moment, she doesn't respond; she simply returns elena's smile with a small and very sympathetic one of her own -- she understands -- before she reaches over to place a reassuring hand on elena's arm, squeezing gently if she's allowed. ]

Perhaps you could ask around here and gather your own cookbook. I might even be willing to add a few English ones that I remember from my youth. [ and elena has no idea to appreciate just how long ago that was. ]
