day 225 | xiii ❧ potluck mingle!

[ this is her first time doing one of these without gran, and something she thought was going to be difficult for those very reasons is actually rather therapeutic, heartwarming -- a glance back at her roots, back when she was just adele stackhouse's weird granddaughter and not that fae who mingles with vampires. sookie contributes a few dishes from her gran's old recipes, along with something lafayette taught her to make. she's got all the tables in this part of trois park covered with checkered table clothes of varying colors, lots of plastic silverware, paper plates, cups, and napkins at the ready, and a stack of picnic blankets folded up on one of the benches for those who wish to sit on the grass instead of at a table. sookie even brought a long a mesh bag full of sports equipment -- or rather, a couple frisbees, a football, soccer ball, basketball, and even some hacky sacks. (she's not the sports type, but jason would always be off playing something with the other guys.)

hopefully she didn't leave anything out. hopefully this will help cheer everyone up some, both the new arrivals and those still dealing with the days they spent in that other prison. ]

[Calliope is bundled up. Not just because she's chilly—she is, and it's a surprising turn of events to her—but also because the extra layering and bit of cover lets her feel less like an ugly monster invading a big happy group of people.]

[Like a little flighty bird, she darts in and sneaks bits of food when she thinks no one is looking, only to go stand somewhere unobtrusive while she eats. She doesn't understand the rule of the pot luck, so she didn't actually bring anything to share. Fortunately, she's a light eater and won't be too burdensome with her snacking.]

[Might run into people on accident while engaging in her decidedly absurd bobbing and weaving tactics, though.]

[ Damon's been people/alien/whatever watching and he definitely notices Calliope's attempt to be a wallflower. The moment she reaches the table to grab at some food items, Damon's by her side being all nosey, concerned, friendly. Pick one. ]

What's the rush? You know these little bits of food -- they're not going anywhere. [ He leans in and lets out a slight whisper. ] People are more concerned about looking good and taking care of their waistline. It's a shame.

[So focused was she on quickly selecting something that she didn't see Damon suddenly enter her personal space, and now she has no idea what to do about it.]

[Then he starts whispering. The content of it strikes her as being rather nonsensical. It's enough to get her to function like a vaguely social creature, instead of a scaly green deer caught in the headlights.]

I- um- what? [She looks around in clear confusion.]

Do... people think they look bad while eating...?

Mm. Some do. [ He bites into a spring roll. Clearly not one of those people. Who needs a plate even. ]

So. [ Here's him attempting to take a good look at her. ] What are you?

[Calliope does her best to try and prevent him from getting said good look, because the question already puts her on the spot. Being stared at, to boot...]

["Uncomfortable" is an understatement.]

I'm a cherub.

[ Well, that gets his interest. He notices the discomfort though and reaches for a plate to put his focus on something else so she won't run off and hide. ]

Gotta say -- you're not exactly how I thought a cherub would look like. [ Isn't he all matter-of-fact? ] Do you have wings?

[She gives him a funny side-long look, and then remembers that Aradia can hide her wings; therefor, it must be a common trope.]

No, not at all.

[Adding.] Humans may have a concept of cherubim, but I'm sure that I'm nothing like that.

[ He was thinking that she was maybe hiding them under her many layers, but that just seems silly. ] What are you in here for? [ She doesn't seem like she's capable of hurting a fly even, but who knows? ]

I'm in for jaywalking, excessive drinking, inappropriate behavior and everything ever. [ Best not to mention the murder bit. ]

[Calliope pauses. She knows she doesn't have to answer that, but at the same time, a lot of the things she could consider to be actually moral crimes always seem to strike humans as being petty.]

[She's still going to skip those, though.]

Stalking, sedition, and some assorted minor baloney.

What exactly qualifies as "inappropriate behaviour"?

Oh, you know. Getting drunk in public areas, getting teenagers drunk, offensive and unwanted sexual advances, all the suggestive comments ever and blah blah blah. [ He's not at all ashamed. ]

But ooh. Stalking. Looks like we've got a thing or two in common.

Where are you from? Planet Cherubian? [ See how he totally made that up? ]

[Excellent work, Damon.]

[But Calliope, demonstrating polite patience for the silly made-up name, shakes her head.]

My brother and I grew up alone on a desert planet. We never named it, or knew who lived there first.

[Which doesn't actually answer his question. She has a feeling that he won't be so easily deterred by a subject change, but she makes the attempt anyway.]

I know a thing or two about Earth, though! What part of it are from?

Mystic Falls, Virginia. [ He very much doubts she would have heard of it and he's also definitely bringing the subject back to her. ]

You were alone on an entire planet? [ That seems all kinds of sad. Not to mention lonely. (And Damon knows all about loneliness despite having lived amongst millions of people on planet Earth.) ]

Was it an itty bitty planet? [ He's thinking of a book he'd read once: 'The Little Prince'. The prince had lived on a tiny planet; or more like an asteroid the size of a house. Good story, good book. ]

[No dice. It was about what she expected.]

I never especially had the means to measure it, but the shape of the horizon suggested it was huge. [She tries to come up, on the spot, some additional tricks for wriggling around these questions should they hit a point of being too invasive. Calliope isn't very good at handling people when she feels flustered, which is beginning to happen, so the best she comes up with is "run away if his questions get too awkward."]

[For now, she sticks it out.]

It was a very warm and peaceful place to grow up.
