day 225 | xiii ❧ potluck mingle!

[ this is her first time doing one of these without gran, and something she thought was going to be difficult for those very reasons is actually rather therapeutic, heartwarming -- a glance back at her roots, back when she was just adele stackhouse's weird granddaughter and not that fae who mingles with vampires. sookie contributes a few dishes from her gran's old recipes, along with something lafayette taught her to make. she's got all the tables in this part of trois park covered with checkered table clothes of varying colors, lots of plastic silverware, paper plates, cups, and napkins at the ready, and a stack of picnic blankets folded up on one of the benches for those who wish to sit on the grass instead of at a table. sookie even brought a long a mesh bag full of sports equipment -- or rather, a couple frisbees, a football, soccer ball, basketball, and even some hacky sacks. (she's not the sports type, but jason would always be off playing something with the other guys.)

hopefully she didn't leave anything out. hopefully this will help cheer everyone up some, both the new arrivals and those still dealing with the days they spent in that other prison. ]

[ there isn't much betty knows how to cook. boiled eggs and onion tomato sandwiches, maybe that beef tongue loaf mrs. corbett had tried to teach them all to make, but those aren't things you bring to a picnic. or to an anything, in the case of the beef tongue. at least since she's already here for fraud there's no harm in using her grandmother's onion cake recipe and bringing that.

she could probably stop herself from standing nearby and seeing if people eat any, but she's not. ]

[Calliope makes her way to it, plainly curious. Is it cake? Is it pizza? It appears to have meat, but it smells like... a lot of other things.]

[With a lack of careful and polite self-censoring that comes from not knowing she's being watched, she very slowly cuts off a small piece and pops it directly into her mouth.]

[If she has a reaction, it's a little hard to tell under her scarf and hoodie and other various bits of clothing that are covering her up. Still, something can be gathered; the pause as she stares down at it, the confused sort of half-reaching posture.]

[Calliope comes to realize she is way out of her usual depth, here.]

[ is it that bad? is it bad because betty is a bad cook or because german food is just weird? mysteries for the ages.

betty is trying to be smooth, though, as if she is totally cool with people hating her oma's recipe, while she walks up past calliope toward the food just on the other side of the onion cake. yep, getting some of that food, no big deal. ]

You okay?

[ WHY DON'T YOU LIKE MY FOOD? pressing questions, but being smooth. (she does not really look smooth at all.) ]

I'm fine! I'm fine. [She isn't very fine.]

[Betty, if she understood it was yours, she would be apologizing so much right now. But as it stands, Calliope is having a moment of attempting not to freak out immaturely over the taste of baked onions.]

Do you know the name of this dish?

[ betty leeeaaans over to peer at it, as if it is some alien thing she has never set eyes on before. ]

Looks like an onion cake.

[Calliope contemplates this answer for a decent amount of time. In perfect innocence, glances up at Betty with her big green eyes.]

What's an "onion"?

[ oh. well. that certainly explains a lot of the reaction going on. though betty isn't quite sure how to explain an onion. ]

A vegetable... [ obviously trying very hard to think of how else to describe an onion and coming up short. ] You've never had one before?

No...

[She giggles nervously.]

I don't really eat vegetables. It's, ah, certainly an interesting flavor!

[Calliope returns her attention zwiebelkuchen-ward.] Maybe not what I would think of as cake, by my understanding of it, but I'm not exactly an expert.

Yeah, it must be if you've never had one before.

[ how does someone not eat vegetables? of all the weird things in this moment betty could mentally fixate on, that is what she can't get past. ]

And I guess it's more of a bread than a cake. Especially if the cake you're used to has icing on it.

[Calliope starts thinking of dessert-cake, rather than lying onion-cake, and she smiles.]

That makes sense!

I've never really had bread, either... well, it's certainly worth the experience, to say I tried it! Curiosity is good and natural, after all. [The cherub attempts to very subtly tug her scarf around so she can shovel another bite of onion cake into her mouth. There may or may not have been a white forked tongue involved in that.]

[ there is probably a really great metaphor to be had and pondered at length about betty's hiding and the lying onion cake, but she's not that self aware when there is weird tongue things going on. seriously? tongues have to be weird here, too?

betty opts to not question it, both because it would probably be really horribly rude, but also because if she did she isn't sure she'd want to know the answer or deal with the impact it would have on her coping skills. so she grins, and side-eyes in the most genial manner possible. ]

You might want to try regular bread, then. Kinda... Work your way up from there.

[Tongues most certainly have to be weird here.]

That's rather good advice, actually. Thank you! [But she's going to force herself to finish the cake she cut, because it seems rude to put it back.]

Do you suppose there's jam? I've always wanted to try jam.

Onion cake. Didn't know what else to bring, but I figured my grandma's recipe would do better than a bunch of boiled eggs.

[ except no one understands the beauty of german dishes outside, perhaps, strudel. oh, well. at least this nice american person thinks it smells good. ]

[Not far from where Betty is placing her goods, a pink-haired woman is arranging her plate of complicated-looking, bite sized desserts. She glances over at the nearly blonde woman and smiles easily.]

What an interesting cake. It smells savory rather than sweet. Is it your recipe?

[ wow... pink hair. and that stuff looks so good and strange and rich. is this a prison for rich people? did she get put in the wrong one? but she smiles, a little awkward if only because onion cake doesn't quite size up next to whatever that stuff is. ]

My grandma's, actually. Onion cake, so not really a cake so much as a bread, I guess. [ she gestures a little at what she's arranging. ] What're those?

Oh, I see. It looks very good. May I try it? [Even though it's a potluck, manners are important!]

I made a small variety of truffles and meringues. I couldn't pick one kind, so I made several.

If there isn't, I have more at home I could bring. I always make leftovers for my classes or the Defense Force HQ. [Lacus enjoys baking just that much, yes!]

[She takes a dainty bite of the onion loaf.]
Mm, it's quite good! Your grandmother taught you very well.

[ betty ducks her head at the compliment. usually the best she can manage is a boiled egg and a sandwich, so knowing she's doing her oma proud is a big deal. ]

Thanks. [ a pause, and she cleans off the knife and sets it back down as if this is some fancy dinner party and not a pot luck outdoors. ] The Defense Force must like you a lot if you bring this kinda treat for 'em.

I hope they find my contributions valuable. But to be entirely honest, I enjoy doing it. Cooking is a joy I rarely had time to experience before I came here. It's one thing I can do here to brighten my day. [Lacus takes great pleasure in simple things, even in prison. Even though this place weighs heavily on her sometimes.]

Do you have something like that?

I'm, uh, helping out in a couple places. [ she shifts, just a little awkward. ] The garden they've got going, and Dr. Magnus' clinic. It's not much like a real job or anything, but it's something to keep busy with, you know?

Aidan's garden? How wonderful! He's a lovely person, and very dedicated to it. I'm sure it will be a great success. [Genuine enthusiasm there, delivered with calm, easy grace. Lacus is always interested in other people, no matter the topic.]

Those sound like very good uses of your time. You're helping others in both instances.

Yeah, I guess. [ what a nice pink-haired baking person. betty isn't quite sure what to do with herself in the face of such enthusiasm. ]

If we're gonna be stuck here, might as well help out and get to that rehabilitation they talked about when we came in, right?

Mm, I couldn't agree more. [Except that the Wardens' ideas of rehabilitation and hers aren't typically compatible, but no need to get into that.]

[Lacus extends a hand, still smiling.]
I'm Lacus Clyne. It's nice to meet you.
