day 225 | xiii ❧ potluck mingle!

[ this is her first time doing one of these without gran, and something she thought was going to be difficult for those very reasons is actually rather therapeutic, heartwarming -- a glance back at her roots, back when she was just adele stackhouse's weird granddaughter and not that fae who mingles with vampires. sookie contributes a few dishes from her gran's old recipes, along with something lafayette taught her to make. she's got all the tables in this part of trois park covered with checkered table clothes of varying colors, lots of plastic silverware, paper plates, cups, and napkins at the ready, and a stack of picnic blankets folded up on one of the benches for those who wish to sit on the grass instead of at a table. sookie even brought a long a mesh bag full of sports equipment -- or rather, a couple frisbees, a football, soccer ball, basketball, and even some hacky sacks. (she's not the sports type, but jason would always be off playing something with the other guys.)

hopefully she didn't leave anything out. hopefully this will help cheer everyone up some, both the new arrivals and those still dealing with the days they spent in that other prison. ]

We don't have that one in Whales, but I always thought it sounded nice.

It was.

When I was little, and dad used to take me on the road with him, he always made sure that we celebrated together. Even if we had to cook over a portable stove in his dressing room.

Did he fight off evil as well, or was that a career path you chose on your own?

Since before I was born.

Dad was one of the founding members of the Justice League, even. Ahh--[Oh, yeah, there are people who don't know what that is]--that's a group of superheroes from our world. Very popular. The tabloids love them.

You don't keep why you do a secret from people?

Kind of hard to keep it a secret when their names and faces are plastered everywhere.

Besides, dad was already famous before. As a stage magician.

We take rather the opposite approach at Torchwood. The world isn't exactly ready for most of the things we see every day. And I wouldn't trust any governments with the kind of technology we scavenge.

[Torchwood. She figured that was their equivalent of the League. Only less Superpowers and even more Secrecy.]

I'm not sure we could've hid most of the things that go on from anybody. The fights tend to get pretty public. And destructive.

Ours do, too. Which is why we have retcon. Its a memory altering drug. Comes in quite handy, I might add.

Memory...altering...?

Okay, that just sounds creepy.

[It probably says a lot about what his job does to a person that he's never even considered it that way.] Its effective, that's all I care about. It keeps people from finding out what we do and that makes our job easier. The less people know the better.

And you're not worried about messing with memories that some people might--oh, I don't know--need?

Not really, we've got the formula pretty refined.

Don't worry; one of the side effects is unconsciousness and I don't particularly feel like dealing with that at a picnic. [A teasing smile.]

Anyway, its essentially harmless. I'm fairly sure I've been dosed with it a few times, but obviously its hard to be certain. [The whole team had that missing two day gap, for example, and for all he knew there could have been other times as well.]

Oh, that makes me feel so much better.

[Though she manages to smile back, despite herself.]

You'll forgive me if I don't accept any more food or drink from you from now on, though. No offense. I just happen to like my brain the way it is. Memories and all.

Frankly since we're all trapped in an underwater prison by robots after all being kidnapped from different worlds and universes I don't really see the point in trying to keep what I do for a living particularly secret. If I had to try and erase all the strange things everyone sees here I think we'd all end up with no memories left at all.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

no worries! you're fine.

Good point.

Besides, for most of is, this isn't really all that different from home. You know, except for the trapped-underwater part. That was new.

Interesting is one way to put it.

We've got magic users and vampires and werewolves and demon hunters and mutants and speedsters and, on rare occasions, even completely innocent civilians. There's absolutely no pattern whatsoever.

No, there really isn't. [He likes organizing things and tracking patterns and its obvious this irritates him to no end.] Some of the people here do seem to have committed crimes worthy of such an extreme imprisonment - I suppose I'm one of them. But most of them barely deserve a regular jail, if that much at all.

I'd like to think I was one of those people.

[...she'd like to. After all, she was vigilante. She had good intentions. So maybe one or two kitchens had suffered along the way....]

You want to have done something terrible enough to deserve being ripped away from your home world and trapped at the bottom of the ocean?

No. The other one.

The one where I don't actually deserve to be here at all. Which I don't.
