day 225 | xiii ❧ potluck mingle!

[ this is her first time doing one of these without gran, and something she thought was going to be difficult for those very reasons is actually rather therapeutic, heartwarming -- a glance back at her roots, back when she was just adele stackhouse's weird granddaughter and not that fae who mingles with vampires. sookie contributes a few dishes from her gran's old recipes, along with something lafayette taught her to make. she's got all the tables in this part of trois park covered with checkered table clothes of varying colors, lots of plastic silverware, paper plates, cups, and napkins at the ready, and a stack of picnic blankets folded up on one of the benches for those who wish to sit on the grass instead of at a table. sookie even brought a long a mesh bag full of sports equipment -- or rather, a couple frisbees, a football, soccer ball, basketball, and even some hacky sacks. (she's not the sports type, but jason would always be off playing something with the other guys.)

hopefully she didn't leave anything out. hopefully this will help cheer everyone up some, both the new arrivals and those still dealing with the days they spent in that other prison. ]

[Ianto is a huge nerd.]

Does your family know what you do in your free time?

It was just me and my dad, actually.

But, yeah, he knew. [Mostly] He was the one who trained me.

It must mean a lot to both of you to be able to share something like that.

It did. Yeah.

[There is a noticeable sadness to her tone. As if implying the past tense meant more than just a separation by imprisonment....]

[Ianto is perceptive enough to pick up on that tone immediately an quickly apologizes.] I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to bring up a painful subject.

It's alright.

You didn't know.

Well then I mean what I said even more; it must have meant a great deal to be able to share something so special with him.

[She smiles again. It's weak, but it's there.]

Yeah.

Thanksgiving was always one of our favorites. We always made more food than either of us could eat.

We don't have that one in Whales, but I always thought it sounded nice.

It was.

When I was little, and dad used to take me on the road with him, he always made sure that we celebrated together. Even if we had to cook over a portable stove in his dressing room.

Did he fight off evil as well, or was that a career path you chose on your own?

Since before I was born.

Dad was one of the founding members of the Justice League, even. Ahh--[Oh, yeah, there are people who don't know what that is]--that's a group of superheroes from our world. Very popular. The tabloids love them.

You don't keep why you do a secret from people?

Kind of hard to keep it a secret when their names and faces are plastered everywhere.

Besides, dad was already famous before. As a stage magician.

We take rather the opposite approach at Torchwood. The world isn't exactly ready for most of the things we see every day. And I wouldn't trust any governments with the kind of technology we scavenge.

[Torchwood. She figured that was their equivalent of the League. Only less Superpowers and even more Secrecy.]

I'm not sure we could've hid most of the things that go on from anybody. The fights tend to get pretty public. And destructive.

Ours do, too. Which is why we have retcon. Its a memory altering drug. Comes in quite handy, I might add.

[It probably says a lot about what his job does to a person that he's never even considered it that way.] Its effective, that's all I care about. It keeps people from finding out what we do and that makes our job easier. The less people know the better.

And you're not worried about messing with memories that some people might--oh, I don't know--need?

Don't worry; one of the side effects is unconsciousness and I don't particularly feel like dealing with that at a picnic. [A teasing smile.]

Anyway, its essentially harmless. I'm fairly sure I've been dosed with it a few times, but obviously its hard to be certain. [The whole team had that missing two day gap, for example, and for all he knew there could have been other times as well.]

Oh, that makes me feel so much better.

[Though she manages to smile back, despite herself.]

You'll forgive me if I don't accept any more food or drink from you from now on, though. No offense. I just happen to like my brain the way it is. Memories and all.

Frankly since we're all trapped in an underwater prison by robots after all being kidnapped from different worlds and universes I don't really see the point in trying to keep what I do for a living particularly secret. If I had to try and erase all the strange things everyone sees here I think we'd all end up with no memories left at all.
