day 225 | xiii ❧ potluck mingle!

[ this is her first time doing one of these without gran, and something she thought was going to be difficult for those very reasons is actually rather therapeutic, heartwarming -- a glance back at her roots, back when she was just adele stackhouse's weird granddaughter and not that fae who mingles with vampires. sookie contributes a few dishes from her gran's old recipes, along with something lafayette taught her to make. she's got all the tables in this part of trois park covered with checkered table clothes of varying colors, lots of plastic silverware, paper plates, cups, and napkins at the ready, and a stack of picnic blankets folded up on one of the benches for those who wish to sit on the grass instead of at a table. sookie even brought a long a mesh bag full of sports equipment -- or rather, a couple frisbees, a football, soccer ball, basketball, and even some hacky sacks. (she's not the sports type, but jason would always be off playing something with the other guys.)

hopefully she didn't leave anything out. hopefully this will help cheer everyone up some, both the new arrivals and those still dealing with the days they spent in that other prison. ]

Drinks are an important part. And I cheated and brought something someone else made, so I can hardly talk.

[It has been a while since they last talked.

Though she's not sure exactly how to answer such a simple question.
]

It's been an interesting few days, but mostly well. Yourself?

One of these days, I'll practice cooking again.

[ spoilers: she cooks when she needs to, so it'll be soon. ]

As boring as ever. [ it has honestly been fairly boring and she doesn't mind it at all. better than being shuffled around. ] I've been working on the clinic, mostly. It's proving to be a good use of my time. I certainly have enough time.

[ she's fully expecting to outlive most, if not all, of her fellow prisoners. that's just how her life rolls. ]

Are you out of practice or still learning?

[It could go either way.]

I'm glad your clinic is doing well. [There's a pause, as she recalls the patchwork she had seen on Matt, the hospital would have healed him completely which leads her to this conclusion:.]

Did you treat a young man named Matt Donovan?

Out of practice.

[ all helen really manages to give in response to her clinic is a smile before rebekah makes her question. on the one hand, it's an innocent enough question. if matt really is a friend of rebekah -- and she sees no reason why rebekah would lie about that, if asked -- there's no harm in answering a simple yes or no question. however, there's also the idea of patient confidentiality and with it comes the reminder that helen doesn't really know anyone here except nikola.

trusting any of them... that's another step. despite only having known rebekah for a few days, helen likes her and because of that -- ignoring the cautiously calculating look she's been giving rebekah for a few seconds -- she's been willing to entertain a friendship with the other woman. ]

Is he a friend of yours? [ her voice is cautious, a tone that suggests she isn't doubting rebekah's intentions as much as keeping her potential patient's privacy. ]

[Friend doesn't seem the right word somehow -- an assumption and not enough to describe the situation all at once. Friends have never been something Rebekah's had much of -- though she's had better luck of them here than she ever had back home. Still. Friend. She supposes it works.

They're friends. Friends who apparently get drunk and then end up making out with one another. Okay, so it's not like her thing for Matt was a secret (Rebekah's never been good at hiding her feelings) but before that -- well he had never been the one to make the first move. She's trying not to read into it too much though, as there had been alcohol involved.

Finally, she realizes she's been silent a little too long, mulling over the term.
]

Yes. I know him from back home -- he's been staying with me since he arrived. [Which hasn't been something either one of them have advertised considering how the other residents from Mystic Falls might react.]

[ helen waits, her eyes taking in what she can of rebekah's expression. she's obviously turning something over in her mind, though what, exactly, that is, helen isn't certain. either way, rebekah has yet to give helen a reason not to trust her and helen trusts her instincts well enough for this.

her expression relaxes slightly as she gives her own pause. ]

He came to me. I did what I could and sent him on his way. [ with explicit instructions to come back to her if it got worse. ] With luck, it should heal with no lasting damage.

[ part of her wants to ask questions, but this isn't her sanctuary. not her place, not her rules, and she's made it a habit not to pry into other peoples' lives. besides, rebekah is hardly a close friend yet; helen knows she really has no business asking. ]

I'm glad someone could give him proper care. I didn't have time to do more than remove the glass at the time.

[What with all the ghosts and stuff running through Mystic Falls -- including the one who strapped them onto that bomb together (the ghost of one of her many bad romantic choices).]

He should be fine. But... if you notice it looks like it isn't healing correctly, please do send him back. I'd like to ensure it goes as well as possible.

[ more because she's an overprotective control freak about this sort of thing. ]

Call it the doctor in me.

[Rebekah would be keeping an eye on it anyways. She's a little protective when it comes to Matt -- which is slightly ironic when most of the rest of the people from Mystic Falls seem convinced she'll hurt him.]

Of course. If I notice anything I'll make sure he comes to see you again.

Thank you. It's a little difficult to keep an eye on everyone here.

[ she offers a smile, but, really, it's true. she doesn't have an office that can start pestering people about check-ups and that's usually okay. the trouble is that matt's injury was pretty extensive and she wants to ensure it will heal properly. ]

Sometimes I think it's harder to deal with than a full city. At least a city had more reliable means of ensuring cooperation.

That's very true. There seems to be little to control people here.

[Except when the wardens decide to intervene, of course.]

All the more reason for the rest of us to be cautious, to look out for our fellows. We're in this together, after all, well the ones who want to be.

[ they're only as strong as they are standing together, etc. ]

There will always be those who prefer to be in it for themselves.

[As to which Rebekah falls into...it's a work in progress.]

Always someone who would rather ignore the needs of others.

[ what she means by any of that is up in the air, but it's clear she doesn't abide needless killing or injuring people for personal gain. she doesn't do petty revenge, either, even though she has at least one instance of that staining her hands. standing aside marked her anyway. her life is complicated, always will be. ]

At any rate, I should try to find a few other people while I'm here. [ she's running out on the conversation because it hit a snare. hopefully rebekah won't take it personally. ] It's been wonderful seeing you.
