day 225 | xiii ❧ potluck mingle!

[ this is her first time doing one of these without gran, and something she thought was going to be difficult for those very reasons is actually rather therapeutic, heartwarming -- a glance back at her roots, back when she was just adele stackhouse's weird granddaughter and not that fae who mingles with vampires. sookie contributes a few dishes from her gran's old recipes, along with something lafayette taught her to make. she's got all the tables in this part of trois park covered with checkered table clothes of varying colors, lots of plastic silverware, paper plates, cups, and napkins at the ready, and a stack of picnic blankets folded up on one of the benches for those who wish to sit on the grass instead of at a table. sookie even brought a long a mesh bag full of sports equipment -- or rather, a couple frisbees, a football, soccer ball, basketball, and even some hacky sacks. (she's not the sports type, but jason would always be off playing something with the other guys.)

hopefully she didn't leave anything out. hopefully this will help cheer everyone up some, both the new arrivals and those still dealing with the days they spent in that other prison. ]

[ helen's wearing jeans today, for once dressing a bit more casually than she normally would. things have calmed down over the last day and a half and her routine at the clinic is slowly becoming more normal. or at least, normal for the situation. she's hoping that will become "normal" for being locked in a prison. it'll give her something to do.

and really, that's why she's here: to have something to do. it has nothing to do with the possibility of seeing people she wouldn't mind speaking with. nope. not at all.

for the most part, she's wandering the area, taking a look at everything and all the people who might turn up. she's got a warm smile, open to conversation if anyone wants to approach her. ]

[Rebekah almost didn't come after the confusing night before but really, the distraction is welcome and when she sees a familiar face she makes a b-line over towards Helen.

The smile is probably a little more strained then she'd like, but not ungenuine. It's just been a confused last twenty fours hours for the vampire -- that's all.
]

What did you bring? [It seems like a good conversation starter.]

[ it's all right. the last week has been insane for helen, which is saying something considering her normal life. but when she sees rebekah, she offers a warm smile of welcome. ]

Drinks mostly. I'm not much of a cook these days, but I thought if enough people came and the need was there, I'd go find something else.

[ it's been a while since they've seen each other, after all, and now is as good a time as any to catch up. ]

How have you been?

Drinks are an important part. And I cheated and brought something someone else made, so I can hardly talk.

[It has been a while since they last talked.

Though she's not sure exactly how to answer such a simple question.
]

It's been an interesting few days, but mostly well. Yourself?

One of these days, I'll practice cooking again.

[ spoilers: she cooks when she needs to, so it'll be soon. ]

As boring as ever. [ it has honestly been fairly boring and she doesn't mind it at all. better than being shuffled around. ] I've been working on the clinic, mostly. It's proving to be a good use of my time. I certainly have enough time.

[ she's fully expecting to outlive most, if not all, of her fellow prisoners. that's just how her life rolls. ]

Are you out of practice or still learning?

[It could go either way.]

I'm glad your clinic is doing well. [There's a pause, as she recalls the patchwork she had seen on Matt, the hospital would have healed him completely which leads her to this conclusion:.]

Did you treat a young man named Matt Donovan?

Out of practice.

[ all helen really manages to give in response to her clinic is a smile before rebekah makes her question. on the one hand, it's an innocent enough question. if matt really is a friend of rebekah -- and she sees no reason why rebekah would lie about that, if asked -- there's no harm in answering a simple yes or no question. however, there's also the idea of patient confidentiality and with it comes the reminder that helen doesn't really know anyone here except nikola.

trusting any of them... that's another step. despite only having known rebekah for a few days, helen likes her and because of that -- ignoring the cautiously calculating look she's been giving rebekah for a few seconds -- she's been willing to entertain a friendship with the other woman. ]

Is he a friend of yours? [ her voice is cautious, a tone that suggests she isn't doubting rebekah's intentions as much as keeping her potential patient's privacy. ]

[Friend doesn't seem the right word somehow -- an assumption and not enough to describe the situation all at once. Friends have never been something Rebekah's had much of -- though she's had better luck of them here than she ever had back home. Still. Friend. She supposes it works.

They're friends. Friends who apparently get drunk and then end up making out with one another. Okay, so it's not like her thing for Matt was a secret (Rebekah's never been good at hiding her feelings) but before that -- well he had never been the one to make the first move. She's trying not to read into it too much though, as there had been alcohol involved.

Finally, she realizes she's been silent a little too long, mulling over the term.
]

Yes. I know him from back home -- he's been staying with me since he arrived. [Which hasn't been something either one of them have advertised considering how the other residents from Mystic Falls might react.]

[ helen waits, her eyes taking in what she can of rebekah's expression. she's obviously turning something over in her mind, though what, exactly, that is, helen isn't certain. either way, rebekah has yet to give helen a reason not to trust her and helen trusts her instincts well enough for this.

her expression relaxes slightly as she gives her own pause. ]

He came to me. I did what I could and sent him on his way. [ with explicit instructions to come back to her if it got worse. ] With luck, it should heal with no lasting damage.

[ part of her wants to ask questions, but this isn't her sanctuary. not her place, not her rules, and she's made it a habit not to pry into other peoples' lives. besides, rebekah is hardly a close friend yet; helen knows she really has no business asking. ]

I'm glad someone could give him proper care. I didn't have time to do more than remove the glass at the time.

[What with all the ghosts and stuff running through Mystic Falls -- including the one who strapped them onto that bomb together (the ghost of one of her many bad romantic choices).]

He should be fine. But... if you notice it looks like it isn't healing correctly, please do send him back. I'd like to ensure it goes as well as possible.

[ more because she's an overprotective control freak about this sort of thing. ]

Call it the doctor in me.

[Rebekah would be keeping an eye on it anyways. She's a little protective when it comes to Matt -- which is slightly ironic when most of the rest of the people from Mystic Falls seem convinced she'll hurt him.]

Of course. If I notice anything I'll make sure he comes to see you again.

Thank you. It's a little difficult to keep an eye on everyone here.

[ she offers a smile, but, really, it's true. she doesn't have an office that can start pestering people about check-ups and that's usually okay. the trouble is that matt's injury was pretty extensive and she wants to ensure it will heal properly. ]

Sometimes I think it's harder to deal with than a full city. At least a city had more reliable means of ensuring cooperation.

[Zelgadis' face-concealing hood and mask can't hide everything this evening, not with the way he's sniffling and coughing. Hallmarks to his stubbornness, as he insisted on sleeping outdoors despite the ominous temperature drop ad weather forecast. Too late, he realized his plan of sticking it to the Wardens by making himself ill would do naught but provide him with a lesson in clear thinking.]

[Nevertheless, he's walking through the festivities. There is the matter of his food restriction punishment, for his other recent bout of self-injurious stubbornness...]

[A rough sound carries a far distance as he brings hand to face in a show of politeness, his stone skin rubbing together in a grating noise that even he winces at. His covered face looks over the spread of food, debating whether to bother risking the Wardens' further displeasure. Distracted and short of peripheral vision, he has to pull up short lest he run right into a woman who happened to be nearby.]
Pardon. [His voice is clogged and raspy, clearly unwell.]

[ she's careful to side-step as soon as she notices the person next to her, but it's a close call on both accounts. whether she takes note of anything odd about him, she doesn't show it, her only concern being the sound of his voice. she frowns. ]

Fine. [His tone clearly says otherwise, both in congested raspiness and in sheer bitterness.] Perfect. Who wouldn't be thrilled to be stuck here in this weather? [He speaks as if he's not expecting a response, but rather just grumbling to hear himself grumble.]

I know a fair few who wouldn't. For me it depends on the day. [ she'll just keep up a light, conversational tone. ] And, of course, whether or not I have to go out in it. I find a good hot drink tends to cure most cold-weather-related ills. [ assuming he's not actually sick... ]

I'm on food restriction. [He coughs into his hand.] Otherwise, that was my thought exactly. A good cup of coffee sounds better than heaven.

We do have a clinic now. In case something happens again and you'd rather not be taken somewhere you'd be punished for going in.

[ granted, the clinic's supposed to be for small injuries only, but helen has the expertise to deal with even severe things and certainly wouldn't begrudge someone their first choice of treatment locations. ]

[Well. No easy way to explain it, so he lowers his hood just long enough to reveal that his skin is made of smooth, perfectly alined, slate-grey stone.]

[The hood is back in place before he speaks again.]
I don't think you could do much with me.

[ if he's expecting her to be offended, frightened, or angry about what he shows her, he'll be in for a huge disappointment. the only sign she shows that he's caught her attention at all is the note of interest in her eyes as she glances over him, but it's controlled interest, barely there and certainly not the sort a mad scientist or doctor would show. ]

Actually, that places you right inside my area of expertise. I specialize in all degrees of medicine, for both humans and non-humans. You could call it my life's work to help anyone I can.

[ in a manner of speaking. there are other details to it -- namely the goal to protect one from the other -- but those are hardly important here. ]
