[Euphie's voice is soft and she omits the video this time, opting only for sound, which she very rarely does.]

I just wanted to thank everyone for their help in the other prison. I'm extremely sorry for the the things I said and did. I'm especially sorry to those I hurt and scared. I'm not feeling any of those urges anymore since we returned. I hope I never do again.

[She pauses, wanting to say more. Wanting to put it right. But what can she say? She called for the deaths of innocent people. She considers offering to leave the school to someone else's care, but she also doesn't want to burden anyone. In the end, there's not much more to say. She isn't looking for sympathy. She just wants people to know they're safe.] Thank you for your time.

[ helen pauses for a moment, turning her thoughts over in her mind. she's known people who have done similar things, used others to carry out their diabolical plans against a certain group of people. it's horrendous and barbaric. but she can forgive the ones who were unwillingly pulled into the situations. it isn't their fault. ]

I once knew someone in a very similar situation to yours. I would have offered her the same had she lived.

[ had her daughter lived, helen would have done a lot more for her, to help her deal with what the cabal had turned her into. instead, helen was left with nothing more than the memories of what ashley had become... and the knowledge that that soldier wasn't her daughter. her daughter had died long before her physical body burned. ]

I also knew someone who would have obeyed that order without being forced into it. Lives were ended in both cases. The important part is the intent behind the actions. I don't believe someone should be held accountable for what they have been forced to do, not if they cannot fight the order and particularly if it goes against their nature.

[ the tone of her voice suggests she has far more experience with this than anyone ever should. ]

[Euphie looks thoughtful, taking in more than her own feelings about the situation—which are vast and complicated. She can hear Helen's voice and the way she speaks with such experience. She can't help but feel compassion for her even if she can't know what she's been through.]

I'm very sorry for the person who didn't live. I'm fortunate that way. [Here, in this place. But she knows better. She knows of her world, her future, where she was shot by the man who had cursed her and where she died not long after in a medical bay ill equipped to save her even with all it's technology.]

It gives me an opportunity to do something to...make things better now. [She can't take it back or fix it. She can't even help the families directly affected from here, but she can make Marina a better place. She must.]

[ helen's voice is thick and quiet with the emotion she's trying so very hard to hold back. that whole thing may have happened over a century ago for her, but it's very difficult for her to think about, even now. ashley isn't a subject she brings up. helen would much rather ignore her issues than face them, particularly with a stranger. even so, there's only so much she can do with this topic. ]

It's a pleasure to meet you, Euphie, despite the circumstances. [ and it really is. she's liking what she's seeing now, but she'll reserve judgment for the moment.

at the question, she pauses. it's barely a minute, but it's significant for anyone caring to keep tabs on the conversation. it means, regardless of how she answers, this is a topic that is very dear to her. it means something. ]

Yes... [ she could have lied, but she figures it might be better to be honest, even if she can't talk about everything just yet. ] But I hope you'll understand if I would prefer not to discuss the details of that situation just yet.

Of course. I do understand, and I'm very sorry. I know it was hard for my family after what I did. [She's not saying she assumes this person was Helen's family. It's just that the people in Euphie's life who were close to her were her family. There were few others. Suzaku, her knight, and perhaps Guilford, her sister's knight. Maybe a few others in the military, but who else did she really know or see?]

As I am for you. It's always the most difficult for the people involved, the ones directly affected... and their family. [ the assumption is correct. it's the kind of family tie that doesn't go away but hurts the most to lose. helen always knew it would be a possibility when she finally brought the baby to term, but she never imagined she would lose her daughter at such a young age. ]
