He's pretty sure she'd be good in the spotlight, but the fact she keeps to the shadows is just another reason this smile is creeping onto his face when it should probably stay safely tucked away with his many other feelings like his restlessness and frustration over getting home and the emptiness that comes with losing Dean...again.]

the truth is she used to be good at the spotlight. it used to come natural; she rarely noticed or tried to excel at it, but maybe a part of her reveled in it. caroline has always been the person who needed and thrived under it - and after elena's parents died...

it just didn't seem that important anymore; she didn't want it. ] I kind of needed a night out. [ it's only somewhat of a fib. mostly she just needed to occupy her mind, not be alone.

there's a pause; her eyes flicker over him. ]

Did you hear about that Sadie Hawkins thing? [ she probably shouldn't. ]
