[ that she's not expecting. it takes elena a moment to excuse herself and follow. maybe she spares a second considering leaving with rebekah someplace private is a risky call - but elena happens to believe she'll be fine.

she may not be entirely safe with rebekah, not 100% of the time, but she's confident she can maintain control. has to.

the cool night air hits her face; she's only a few steps behind. ] Rebekah? What's this about? [ maybe for a second she thinks about damon's jagged stab wound she saw only the night before; it's less about his pain as the thought is about rebekah's impulsive nature and trustworthiness. then she thinks about caroline's arm. ] Is everything okay?

[Rebekah's still not sure about what she's doing. Her brother's lied to her once here, but if he finds out she's working against him -- but Quinn is her friend, and that's not something Rebekah's ever had a lot of and he promised her he wouldn't do this and he did it anyways (she's not surprised though, not really). She breathes, and then finally:]

You said you had vervain. [Not that really explains anything, but it's a start.]

[ elena pulls in a breath through her nose. she might have thought of the possibility, suspected... even maybe talked it over with caroline... but hearing it from rebekah is different.

she believes her. she believes rebekah had nothing to do with it. (wouldn't truly in the first place.)

but this means more than that. this means quinn's in danger. elena takes a step forward. ] Think or know?

I don't have proof. [She hasn't seen Nik do it. ] But both Stefan and Caroline have pointed out strange things in her behavior -- the sort of behavior that is typical of those compelled. And though Nik promised me he wouldn't -- well we both know what my brother's word is worth, sometimes.

[And Rebekah maybe feels responsible. She had been the one to suggest moving in with Quinn to have a human barrier from the Salvatores trying anything else.]

[ elena wants to ask - why klaus would do that to quinn, why quinn - but she thinks she knows. she thinks "sometimes" is more like "all the time."

there's no question of it. elena will get the vervain for quinn. still she pauses, is quiet. thinking of all the outcomes and reasonings for this, but it's the tenor of rebekah's voice the decides her. it's quinn that does. ] I'll get you what she needs. But I need something from you.

[It's hard to trust Elena (she can still feel the sharp pain of that dagger in her back) but she doesn't have a lot of other options. Stefan and Damon tried to burn her home down -- they clearly see her as the enemy and maybe rightfully so. But Quinn is her friend and she has a life here and she doesn't want to just lose all that because Niklaus is here.

It's not fair. She deserves more, and that realization alone is staggering.]

Thank you. [She had almost made a snide remark instead but she is grateful, and perhaps if this truce is ever going to be real, she should show it.]

[ it's not until rebekah thanks her that elena realizes she would have even expected a snide remark. but it's honest, however stiff or grudging.

elena takes it, nods. she is hard to trust; she accepts that. understands. not any more or less than rebekah is trustworthy here - but maybe she's starting to feel some trust here too, even if it's only building on what she trusts about rebekah. on their honesty. ] I care about her too. [ she might not know quinn well, but she does enough. she wouldn't need to know her to care in the first place. ]

[Quinn reached out to Rebekah in a way few ever have -- she tried to cheer her up with movies and treated her like a normal girl and Rebekah would be lying if she said it didn't matter, if she said that connection didn't matter.

Her brother won't like this, and it's not that she isn't still afraid of her brother because she is (she fears him almost as much as she loves him) but she's selfish -- she wants to keep the things she has. The connections she has. She wants more than Klaus is able to provide her and for once she finds herself unwilling to just give it up.]

She's a good person. [And Rebekah cares. As always she cares too much and too easily. It's both her biggest weakness and greatest strength.]
