[Yes, yes, he certainly couldn't deny that, but he figured it was implied.

However, as Spike pressed on and Murder came up there wasn't a response, just a longer silence than before. He was avoiding that one. It wasn't a no, he didn't feel any need to deny it, though it wasn't a yes either. It wasn't exactly a good way to hide things, it may as well have been a yes in all honesty, but he still didn't feel right saying much on the issue. He regretted it and yet felt justified for it at the same time.]

[Just a little tension in his shoulders then Sam turns his head to speak over his shoulder, doing his best not to reveal much with his tone or expression.]

Hey, how 'bout you check the network, see if anyone knows anythin' about all this.

I'm plannin' on goin' back t'Merlotte's and having a drink. [Or three, or six... That's the slightest hint that he wouldn't mind the company, or is expecting it, but knows damn well Spike should be back to normal for it.]

Fine, fine... but that's a yes if I've ever heard one.

[ Spike grumbled some before occupying himself with scanning the network. It seemed widely spread, but so far he couldn't find a cause... though that freeze-dried moose of a Hunter seemed to think he had an idea. (Spike already knew that the Other Sam had no clue about anything, so he didn't bother peeking.)

The hint that Sam the First wanted company did not go by unnoticed. Ignored, perhaps because as long as Spike was all see-through drinking would be difficult and so he pretended like he hadn't even heard it, stance nonchalant as he prepared to deliver the lack-luster report—

—only to stiffen as another of those blasted ghosts drifted into his field of vision. You'd think he wouldn't even bat an eye anymore, after both Dru and Harmony walked by earlier in the day but this one was different. This was someone he really never expected to see again, in any capacity. ]

[Just ignoring that there Spike.] Believe what you want.

[He's grateful for the silence but eventually stops to watch the blond as he seems distracted by the network, not wanting to wander too far without hearing an answer. He watches the woman appear and thinks nothing of it, it wasn't anyone HE knew anyway. That was... until he sees Spike's reaction.

He looks at her again, then back to spike and moves to his side.]

Who's that?

	[ For a moment there Spike is practically unable to tear his eyes off the woman. She's old, frail and soft and alive, just like he'd like to remember her, but doesn't. [Sam couldn't take his eyes off of her, committing the frail, soft features to memory. Could be his mother maybe? Or someone special at least...

He quirks a brow at that growled response and thought for a moment before offering something.]

You tell me about her and who she is and I'll tell you how many. [He's killed, though since the number isn't high he planned to say who they were at least. Maybe not a WHY perse...but we'll see how generous he's feeling depending on what Spike tells him first.]

[ Spike was all set to just walk away from the dreadful ghost of his past, but that offer makes him stop practically mid-stride. Turning his head he gives Sam a curious look. Not sure if he wants to offer up the identity of that woman — he hasn't talked about her with anyone for well over a decade — but it is a decent offer...]

[Hearing that really isn't all that surprising to Sam. Of course, he still saw Spike as a killer, a vampire, so that generalization put a negative light on him. It didn't seem odd that the guy might kill his own mother for a meal. Though part of him wanted to know why. The tension and hesitation told him there was something uncomfortable about seeing her. Maybe she was meaner than she looked?

He cleared his throat.]

I helped dispose of my mother and fathers bodies by tossing them into a swamp for th' gators.

[A pause to let that sink in, wondering if it'd help at all.] I didn't kill'em, but I've got two other marks on my conscience.

OLooking to him.] Why'd you do it?

[Sam is a little more perceptive than he lets on sometimes. There's something here, something more to this and it's really no surprise it seems personal. They were talking about his mother after all. Considering everything Spike had told him so far was pretty nonchalant and then this? The tension, the dodging? It was curious. He couldn't quite tell if under that agitation was a measure of guilt, but the blond did seem pretty shaken at seeing her. It'd been a long time for Spike and there was something almost sad and longing the way he'd looked at her.]

Is it?

[Even that response seemed to be lacking the usual conviction. Sam was prodding gently. What are you hiding Spike? What kind of a man are you really?]

The kind of man who, when ensouled, will sacrifice his own unlife to save the world. The kind of man who will withstand any torture thrown his way just to prove to the woman he loves that he's more than she thinks.

But he's not there yet. Not at the point of saving the world and definitely not at the point of letting Sam know that side of him. ]

[ He doesn't have a soul. There shouldn't be a shred of guilt in him, but when it comes to her... certain parts of your humanity you just can't shake, no matter how dead you are.

He shifts his weight, frustrated and restless. Has half a mind to just walk away, but this shouldn't matter and so he decides to just... spit it out. ]

She was sick. Dyin'. I turned her so she wouldn't have to suffer. Didn't turn out so well, alright? [ Technically he killed her twice. ]

[Sam doesn't do so well at hiding his sympathy. It wasn't something he should feel sorry for Spike about, but at the same time he sort of understood the reason. He can only imagine how that might have worked out, what sort of a monster he might have turned her into. He wasn't sure what happened to a person when they were turned, other than the obvious death part, but some of the Vampires he knew didn't really seem human at times. Yet... ones like Jessica, or even Bill, they kept their humanity. He had a sneaking suspicion that Spike did too, but he was starting to see that the guy tried to seem more soulless than he was.

He wasn't sure what to make of all this or what to really say. It's not that he thought Spike was any less dangerous, but maybe he was starting to think it wasn't such a bad idea to befriend him. The way the other followed after him only made it seem more like the other needed someone to talk to. In some ways... so did Sam.]

I'm sorry. [Softly, while trying not to sound overly sympathetic. He didn't think spike really wanted any of that to begin with.]

[ Vampires were predators. Human emotions like love, compassion, sensitivity... they were all seen as a weakness and a guarantee to end up at the very bottom of the pecking order if you weren't careful. Weakness wasn't allowed and Spike had fought long and hard for the reputation that made the rest of the vampire world think twice before saying that he was.

He didn't have a soul, but he did have emotions. Powerful, consuming emotions. He loved Drusilla for a century and then some, he burned for her in ways few humans knew how to and while his lack of soul stripped him of a conscience, he was a lot more sensitive than most people would give him credit for.

Sensitivity is a weakness. The heart of a poet clashes so horribly with a set of fangs. ]

Don't. [ The reply comes out in a half-growl. No, he doesn't need any sympathy.] It was a stupid idea.

[It did sound like a terrible idea, he couldn't deny that, but he still understood the why. For a time he doesn't really know what to say, mind drifting to all the stupid ideas he had at one time. The regrets he had for the people he let into his life, or took out of it.]

We all do stupid things sometimes. [A little distantly, but he breaks from it to offer the blond a small smile. He then turns to start walking again, heading in the direction of his restaurant. Wouldn't be far now.]

[ There was a low, rumbling growl at that, followed by a moment of hesitation before Spike finally decided to follow Sam for a bit longer. He wanted to get out of here anyway and turning around felt like a worse choice than continuing on the lost puppy route he'd struck up so far.

He walked in silence, thoughts a million miles away as he effortlessly slipped through whatever got in his way. It was strange how quickly he got used to this incorporeal business, you'd almost think—

—there was a resounding CLANK followed by the thud of a body hitting the ground. Yep. Sure did walk into a light post there.]

Hnnrgh—! Sonnovabitch!

[Funny thing, Sam was just about to cast a glance over his shoulder to see if the ghost-vampire was still at his heels. He first noticed the sudden appearance of footsteps, a split second before the clank of a body hitting a metal post resounded. He flinched slightly, FEELING that one and turning to look at the fallen vampire with disbelief.

Did he really--?

He couldn't contain his amusement at the idea the blond ran into a light post. All that pissy, growly attitude and then he suddenly turns solid just as he was getting used to being incorporeal. He had to laugh at the situation, it was just too rich. The angry cursing didn't help to quiet him down either, but he didn't really think to the fact the other was now SOLID and could HIT HIM for laughing at him.

He does eventually try to quiet down though.]

Well, hey, you're solid again. [Snerk. Still kinda trying not to laugh.]
