So. Okay. Instead of being all "I have this friend who needs some advice" I'll just come right out and admit that stuff happened and I am sort of freaking about it. Not big-time, I guess -- well, it depends on what second you ask me. Maybe just a little big-time.

Here's the deal. I have this best friend in the world and well, he kissed me. Or I kissed him. In any case, there was a kiss. And I do not have any clue what to do because what if this ruined everything and my usual chatroom and IM venting avenues are totally blocked and there's no Dear Abby here and this is just not good in so many ways and my ability to giggle is severely impeded and --

Um. Little help?

[So where is she after making this little post? In the education center, which she is not aware is a hub for the Defense Force. She's typing away at a computer, fingers flying for a WPM in that way only a very seasoned pro can attain. Virtual world distractions, here Garcia comes!]

Well... it's not territory, and I jumped to conclusions... [Looking up, she manages a light smile in return]

It's nice to meet you, Ms-- er, Garcia. [It's hard to stop the automatic honorific, but she doesn't think Garcia would like it much either] I'm Tear.

Likewise, Tear of the Dee Eff.

Hey, what's that like, just for my info? My main squeeze [...which is just a nickname really...] and best boy are members, so hey. I may as well know what's up.

Um, Grants... [A flash of confusion goes across her face at first-- this woman is a kind of bubbly she's not exposed to often and has her own terms for things, but she gets that two people important to Garcia are members. She thinks so, at least]

It's, well... much less organized and strict than the military, so perhaps more like a guild... There are shifts for patrolling, and certain reports to be made, though, so still close enough to being a soldier that it's easy for me to settle into.

Okay, wow. You're really descriptive but totally not singing my tune. I'm wondering, like, is it more or less every person for himself, or like a formal stuffed-suit forced teamwork, or are people friends or what? And like, what's the use if any for an intel guru like me, because TBH I'm not getting anywhere near a gun or a fight or anything that growls.

[You might want to ask her to speak normally, which she absolutely will!]

[While she might take up that offer eventually, she thinks she's getting the gist of it so far! Just don't mind the brief stints of awkward that shadows her expression from time to time]

Alright-- first... It's a bit of both, the teams are to work as a unit, so some are groups of friends because of that but no one has to get along more than necessary. Formality would depend on each team leader, really: this is a job and I'm not out to socialize, but if someone wants to do so then as long as their part is done, I don't have much to say.

Second, there are dispatch positions if you don't want to fight. And the intelligence-- ah, investigative team for research, data and records organization as well now, I suppose.

[Deep breath, and hesitant look; is that better?]

Hm. I mean, thanks, that's what I wanted to know. [Smiling! She really is grateful even if the info isn't that reassuring.] I just wish I could be more sure about the thing. I'm really used to a close knit team that's been together forever, so being suddenly with new people I can't really trust is not the most pleasant of ideas.

[She shows a faint smile in return for Garcia's thanks, but it pulls down into a small frown quickly]

You never work with anyone else?

Sometimes, but it's only temporarily. Most of what we do works as well as it does because we've been together for years. Working with a bunch of superhuman strangers sounds pretty scary, actually.

[There's a ghost of uneasiness across her face before it's mostly replaced with a thoughtful look; she just hit this topic with Euphemia not that long ago so it bothers her easily than usual]

I suppose it must... But it's better than being alone against some of them, isn't it? And you won't be replacing your team; from the sound of how close you are, I don't think that's possible anyways.

Yeah... [She's considering, but honestly it's just this place as a whole and all the weird in it that makes her uncomfortable. Working for a new team would be like -- ]

I guess I just don't want to set up roots like that. I dunno. Make this place feel like home. I really want to go back to where I belong, all of us.

[Sympathy eases into her expression; yes, she does feel sorry for such a kind person being taken away from her entire comfort zone and left to be in this stressful state]

An argument can be made for both adapting and resisting, really. [Neither one seem to work out terribly well for her] I'm glad you have a home to go back to, though. Usually the ones that settle in, don't.

[She nods, sadly. It's really awful that there's people who don't have anything to go back to.] I heard some people say that. I can't imagine. Like, literally, I can't, because when I try I get this sick feeling and then I have to stop.

I guess we're all just sort of making it work however we can, right? [A small dose of optimism, but optimism nonetheless.]

That could be said for life in general, but it does apply especially here.

[She leans back to half sit on a desktop and studies Garcia thoughtfully, considering how she made it personal with her choice of words; most people would just say they feel sorry, the end]

...You feel a lot for people, don't you?

Well yeah. I mean, doesn't everyone care about people? It's what makes us -- people.

[It wouldn't even occur to her that someone could not care about others unless they were, frankly, one of the people Derek tries to get off the streets.]

But there is a difference between genuinely feeling for them, and feeling because you think you have to or are supposed to. A lot of people would say they feel for the unfortunate, but when asked to describe that feeling, they would be at a loss because they've only taken a moment to think "that's too bad" before just moving on, because that much is 'expected'.

What you described is so much more personal. You tried to put yourself in their position, it affected you physically and mentally, made you uncomfortable. Most people wouldn't go that far.

[She can't even go that far every time]

[It takes her a moment to reply, but because she's weighing the matter rather than out of shock.] I guess so. But that's just always been me. Frankly, sometimes I think life would be easier if I were the other type.

But hey, when life gives you lemons you can make lemonade or... what, sympathize with the doomed lemons. Guess I'm the latter, lucky me.
