Really? I don't know how I feel about that I'm sure it's a useful research tool, but it would depend on how detailed the information is. Some things are meant to be personal.

That being said, if you're curious about anything you're always welcome to ask.

Hey, having a shaved head isn't all that bad.

I can understand that. So far all I've found about Hansel and I are fairy tales. We had a reputation back in our time, but apparently the only thing that survived the centuries was how we became what we are. Nothing beyond us being children.

I'm usually pretty curious. Same goes to you.

No. Just... no. Not for me, thanks. He always tried to get me to cut my hair- it's been used against me more than once, but I just can't.

You know, I wondered about that when you mentioned witches. We have that tale in my universe, too. I wasn't really sure whether or not to ask.

Duly noted.

I don't think I've let my hair grow more than an inch in about fifteen years.

Does anyone actually wonder what happened to the seven year olds in the fucking forest after the witch burns? Seriously.

Only about as much as they would any other character they think is from a fictional story. I don't think many people have an opportunity to come into contact with the figures those fables are based on.

I'm starting to discover that I really don't like being a fable. Actually prefer being considered homicidal.

I'm taking that to mean "mostly in the witch-hunting sense", and not that you actively go around killing people.

Also, use the "fable" thing to your advantage. It adds a certain amount of renown that you wouldn't have otherwise. Just work in the "homicidal" angle until overall perception changes. Without actually killing anyone, if you don't mind.

There's been like once when it wasn't a witch. But that was a genuine mistake based on the fact that the freak was killing kids for no reason. Actively, we only kill witches.

The reputation usually worked just fine. Long enough cultivating it and people barely even need to hear your name.

Addendum: Without killing anyone that doesn't have it coming in the first place.

Trust me, I hear you on that one

It usually goes the same way. "You're Hansel and Gretel? Like, the kids and the witch?" "Yes, but there's more to it." "Well nothing I ever heard." On and on. It's difficult going from being feared and respected to being known as prepubescents.

Unfortunately, no document I've ever heard of has ever captured all sides to any story. People just assume they're getting "the relevant parts" and leave it at that.

It's important to note that as seven year olds, if the stories are correct, you killed a witch with no actual weapons or outside help. If that doesn't at least instill some level of respect out of the people you talk to then those are the ones whose opinions you should take with a grain of salt anyway.

Impressive They really have, depending on what universe you're from. Still, sometimes low-tech is better. At some point I'll show you the vid I have loaded on my omni-tool of us siccing an ancient thresher maw a colossal alien worm on a Reaper 500-foot sentient, homicidal space ship.

It's a long story.

Yeah, I understood about half of that. But fuck if you didn't pique my interest.

Homicidal ship?

Yeah, the five-hundred footers are actually the small ones.

You shared with me, so I'll tell you more if you want. To warn you, it's not the cheeriest topic of conversation.

The only thing I've ever seen that big is a mountain.

Cheery? The last thing I did before being brought here was help by brother tie a snow witch to the pyre with her own innards because she kept freezing and breaking the ropes. And that was after she dropped me through a frozen lake. Not sure I could handle cheery.

That's...creative?

The ships are called Reapers, and for good reason. They're synthetic constructs, machines, but exceptionally intelligent, and terribly powerful. Our rough estimate is that their main fleet is comprised of a few...tens of thousands of the larger ships, each one is roughly six thousand feet in length. For each one of those there's about ten thousand or more of the smaller ships.

Currently they're destroying all organic life in my universe, starting with Earth and working their way through every other habitable colony. Conventional weaponry doesn't work, and we've barely touched their number. When they invade a planet they transform the population into mindless, synthetic pawns. The human ones are called Husks....and there were a hell of lot more of them than I want to think about. We were in the middle of a last ditch attack on their force in Earth's orbit when I was dragged here.

Rank is the word I'd use. The bitch nearly bit my nose off.

[...]

Wow, that is cheery.

You'll have to forgive me. More people live in this nearby city than were alive back when we were... well, you get the picture. 'Rush-hour' nearly gave me a heart attack. I'm having a little trouble fathoming the scale.

Well, I did warn you.

I hear holiday traffic is pretty rough too. If they celebrate Christmas I guess we'll see.

Don't worry about the scale. No one in my universe was really prepared for it either.

Boo, and before you ask, my mother's the one who named him. I wasn't going to actually keep calling him that but I honestly couldn't think of anything better. He doesn't mind, apparently.

Did anything show up for you guys?

Boo? That's actually adorable. I don't even know why, but it is.

Strangely enough, yes. A little more bittersweet than a fuzzy friend named Boo, I'm afraid. Also a long story.

Because no reputable commander should ever have an adorable rodent in the first place? Let alone actively call him something a five year old little girl might?

I'm interested if you want to tell it.

On the contrary. I believe if every military commander had himself a furry companion, there would be a lot less war. Maybe.

Today, my father's signet ring and a granite amulet he never took off showed up in our room. To get the full effect, you'd need the full story, probably while having at least lived during my time- though who knows, maybe there'll be some parallels between our 'worlds'. You never know, here.

Superstition and fear were the driving forces of daily life, fed by old traditions and real evil. Hansel and I... we grew up burning witches. We didn't find out until the last year that our mother was burned as a witch when we were kids. Our father was hanged the same night, by the same people, who would've just left the both of them there to rot, rather than bury them properly.

We know, because we do the same thing. We did the same thing...

You know, there might be some serious logic in that.

Hell, I'm sorry. I can't even imagine. Did the two of you ever find those that were responsible?
