This is Padawan Ashoka Tano. I'd say being kidnapped to a world I've never visited is a surprise but it's not. The hospitality is a nice change - hot meals, soft beds and water showers. Already it's better than the last time I was captured. Though it's usually not so difficult to find a way off of a planet.

My Master has filled me in on some of the details of this place but if anyone else has anything to add, I'd be glad to hear it. We got a little distracted with other topics.

Like what happens if you don’t show up to a school you never signed up for? Sitting around in lessons all day isn’t something I’ve done in a long while.

[Even though he doesn't know her, Obi-Wan is the only one Ahsoka can talk to about this.]

I'm happy that Anakin and Padmé are having a baby. [Really she is.]

Attachment is something I struggle with but I just...don't know what to think about this.

[Her heart says it's okay but her head tells her it's wrong. The Code tells her it's wrong.]

Ah. Understandably. Attachment is one of a Jedi's most difficult challenges. Intellectually, we understand the dangers of attachment and what it can lead to. But as much as we may like to be, we aren't always ruled by intellect, even when we try to be.

Anakin has chosen to walk a different path from his life as a Jedi. A different path than he would have been permitted to walk at home. But he's done what he feels is right and while he no longer adheres strictly to the Code, he still has much to offer your training, Young One.

It's not my training I'm worried about. He's a good Master and I've learned a lot from him already.

[There's a bit of a pause.]

Should we accept our attachments? Or should we follow the Code in this instance?

I don't know, Padawan. I'm trying to work that out myself right now. Things are different here. The Code hasn't prepared us for this sort of life.

Is it really the world we're on that's changed things? Or is it us?

Padawan, part of the reason the Jedi can do what we have to do is because, as an Order, we're removed from every day life. We focus on the Force and self-discipline and combat and diplomacy. We stand apart because we're meant to; because it's safer for us to have structure and support to retreat to between missions. Because having that reinforces the walls and careful control we need to cultivate to wield our power responsibly.

Removed from that support system, they begin to crumble over time. So the question is, do we find a new support system for ourselves? Is that what we need, even if the Code suggests it can be dangerous?

I don't know.

If we give up what we had we'd be giving up everything we knew. We're not like Anakin, most of us spent our entire life growing up with the Temple's teachings. But we are capable of accepting and adapting to the challenges placed in front of us.

Somehow it doesn't feel right to decide this for us as a whole. We just all have to do what is best for ourselves and support the choices made.

Nobody is going to condemn decisions made here, but if our only reason for adhering to the Code is the fear of Yoda's admonishment, we're doing it for the wrong reason anyway.

But this is why Anakin doesn't understand why accepting and even welcoming attachment is a difficult decision for the rest of us, Ahsoka. It comes naturally to him. He can't live without it. He understands that about himself. He thinks we'll all be happier if we believe that about ourselves too. He may even be right, at least in the short term. But our own happiness isn't supposed to be what motivates us. Our gaze should be turned outwards, to the protection of others. What does it mean if we decide to pursue our own happiness here, instead?

Is it impossible to do both? To have attachments and still protect others? I know it's difficult to put the well-being of the whole over one individual and that each situation is different but do we have to sacrifice one in order to have the other?

That's the question, isn't it? I suppose we'll have to find out on our own. There's no guidance for us here.

I feel like I just had one of those talks with Master Yoda where I come away with an answer I don't understand. That's not going to be easy, Master.

No, Padawan, it decidedly won't. If I work out the answer, I'll let you know. In the meantime, I'm certain your master can explain his views on the matter; he's very clear on his stance.

Yes. Often irritatingly so.

[He says 'irritating'. His expression looks more fond than irritated.]

Something we can both agree on then.

[But the faint smile gives away that she wouldn't have it any other way.]

If you find you need any further advice, Padawan Tano, I'd be happy to provide it.
