Denial was a powerful thing.
A couple weeks ago, Kurt had thought he was fine with the way things were. There were bumps in the road, sure, but for the most part the arrangement he had with Blaine was working out pretty well. He was able to hang on to all the benefits of being with Blaine (well,
almost all - there were still a few physical boundaries Blaine wouldn't let him cross, but Kurt had been certain that was only a matter of time) without the emotional
stuff - good and bad - that came with it.
And then he'd found the
ring box in Blaine's car.
He knew his sudden shift from hot to cold had left Blaine confused and probably a little hurt, but it had been necessary. He couldn't keep doing that. He had to make it clear that this, being friends, was as much as he could handle right now.
Which was why they were now sitting on opposite ends of the couch upstairs as they watched a movie.
Actually watched it. He had even taken the precaution of putting the popcorn bowl in between them, and snatching his hand back anytime Blaine reached for some, lest their knuckles brush. He couldn't deal with knuckle brushing. It was like a gateway drug. Started off innocent, but the next thing you knew he'd be straddling Blaine's hips and licking into his mouth, behind his teeth. Which, yes, would feel
awesome... but wouldn't exactly help him in his quest to turn this into something strictly platonic.
"So, we go back to school next week..." he said, because reminding himself of their impending separation helped him to behave. "You ready?"
