stranded!
Who: Everyone at the Party
What: Black Tie Ball; STORM!
Where: Shangri-La Hotel on an off-coast Island
When: MARCH 10; 9pm
Rating: TBD
Open? to EVERYONE!

Lights flickered twice in the ballroom, causing the band to stop. Without music and the joyful voices filling the room, a roll of thunder could be heard outside along with the rain coming down in sheets against the window. Guests glanced warily at the doors as the wind picked up, howling through the doors in the lobby left open.

So as not to cause alarm, the host of the evening jumped up onto the platform where the band was set up, picking up a microphone to garner everyone's attention.

"Folks! If I could have your attention please. The storm that we'd hoped would roll right past us seems to have decided to stick around. So right now all the launch boats have been docked. Now this isn't to cause any alarm, and we've still got a full bar, and the band is just getting revved up for another set, so eat, drink, be merry, and we'll ride out this storm just fine. Thanks!"

And with that, the band picked up, hoping to play out just another couple of hours until the storm passed.

[ mod-note; I decided to wait a little later than noon (obviously) because the beginning thread was going so well. It is now 4:30 (PST), and this is just the first thread of the night. If you want to wait for the next one, go ahead - the BLACKOUT thread will go up promptly @ 7:30pm (PST) ]

JOHN IN THE BALLROOM (OPEN!)
[info]action_posable
2008-03-09 12:59 am UTC (link)
John had been attending the event with his Mother, but anyone who knew John well knew that he was always attending such functions in tow of Lynn Conrad who was always pleased as punch to show her son off to her friends. While he was happy to keep his Mother company, John Conrad was not happy to be thrown to a pack of old woman who had a knack for being a little too touchy-feely, so when the first opportunity presented itself, John combined all the knowledge he’d learnt in both the Navy and the FBI and snuck away.

Sitting in the corner of the ballroom, next to a conveniently placed tray of appetizers, John Conrad glanced up at the chandelier curiously as the lights began to flicker.

He’d been expecting a storm, but he hadn’t been expecting one that bad and then there was the mention that the boats had been docked, a comment that sent his mind into overdrive and made him feel more than a little uneasy. Paranoia. It came with the career; one of the hardest things to learn in his line of work, was when the constant paranoia was unnecessary. Shifting uncomfortably in his seat, John picked an appetizer and passed what he felt off as unnecessary.

Callan had arrived late, getting in just as the sky opened up and started to pour down rain, and she looked with some annoyance out on the sudden storm. Just like the weather to do this, now that she was out here in the middle of nowhere. And the boats had all been docked? Swell.

After the lights blipped on and off for the second time, a passing waiter and a tray of fresh drinks distracted the redhead, and she swiped a glass of white wine to sip at it as she scanned the room. No sign of anyone she knew yet, although in this crowd it might take a closer look to find out who was friendly and who wasn't.

She found a seat out of the crush, having decided to sit it out. If nothing else, there was food and drink. There was also bound to be someone passably interesting to talk to. She could be social when she felt like it. With a drink in her hand, (ah, alcohol, the great social lubricant) she even enjoyed it.

Looking for a distraction, John turned his attention towards the woman who had just taken a seat beside him. Holding out the tray, he offered the red-head an appetizer, "I had to mug a waiter to get this tray" he lied, a friendly grin crossing his face as he waved his other hand at the assortment of tiny foods on the tray, "You're more than welcome to share them with me, but I should warn you that when the waiter rats me out, you may unwittingly become my accomplice"

"Thank you, kind sir." The redhead picked up a small sandwich and bit into it, thinking maybe this wouldn't be such a drag after all. She needed to get out of the house more often anyway. Even with the lack of familiar faces, she could still schmooze with the best of them.

"Didn't expect it to become a torrent this quickly," she remarked to the stranger off-handedly, sipping at her drink again. "Hope it blows on past before the lights go out for good."

JOHN AND FAITH BONDING TIME!
[info]frakkin_faith
2008-03-09 01:42 am UTC (link)
Having spent a majority of the evening chatting with her girlfriends, Faith felt the need to pay at least some attention to the men in her life. Though she couldn't find Lance for the life of her, she had spotted John just before the lights began to flicker. She glanced up, and listened to the man speaking on stage. Well, wonderful. She was having a good enough time that she wasn't concerned that she may not have an "out" for the next few hours.

She glanced around when the man finished talking, and patted the back of a woman slightly older than her, who, from Faith's training, she could tell was slightly agitated. She smiled a bit. "Don't worry, you'll just have to pay the sitter a little more." She gave her a comforting smile before weaving back through the crowd to find John. Her dress was hardly conducive to storm-weather, but oh well. "Johnny boy." She chirped, half-skipping before she plopped down next to him and rested her chin on his shoulder. "Share the wealth." She said, reaching for a bite of whatever delicate little appetizer filled the tray next to him.

John turned, pleased to note that Faith had found him. He had to give her credit; in an entire room full of men all dressed in black, she'd managed to find him, "Kudos on finding me" he replied, sending a nod Faith's way, "As a female, is it hard to find a male you know, when everyone is wearing a tux? Because I think it might be how the people of one culture all look the same to the people of another culture"

Reaching forward, he pushed the tray of appetizers across the table and towards Faith, "It's kind of like a box of chocolates" Lance started, adapting the infamous line from the movie Forest Gump, "The green ones, I think they're curried or something, because they taste like ass, but the orangeish ones are alright"

"I know, it's like a game of where's waldo? in here." She said, grinning a bit. She considered his comment and nodded after a moment. "Yeah well." She ruffled her hand in his hair and took another appetizer. "I'd know that rad haircut of yours anywhere. Even if you do look like a penguin." She smiled a cheeky grin at him and cocked her head to the side before leaning back in her seat, crossing her legs to get comfortable.

"Life is like a box of chocolates..." She repeated, chuckling a little. "Take a bite out of everything until you find something you like." She said, wrinkling her nose at the green ones before reaching for an orange one. "So John, you get lucky yet? It's not like you to be in one place for more than an hour without having girls on each arm. Don't tell me you're losing your touch."

BIANCA; ballroom (OPEN!!)
[info]backoff_bitches
2008-03-09 02:15 am UTC (link)
Bianca had felt slightly out of place since the moment she'd gotten to the party. Not that she hadn't dressed well enough or that she didn't know how to act in a room filled with rich people, but more she knew very few people in Boston, and she was still convinced that her invitation was a fluke. Her clinic was doing well, and had garnered quite a bit of press since it's opening. Coupled with her "family name", it really shouldn't have been all that surprising that she had been invited.

Her lips pouted a bit as she listened to the announcement, and was just glad she hadn't run into someone she would rather not speak to so she didn't need to jet on out. She smoothed a hand down the front of her dress before she picked up a glass of champagne that was offered her from a passing waiter. Taking a step to her side when the waiter moved on, she bumped her elbow into someone, nearly spilling her drink. "Oops, sorry." She said, wincing a little as she turned toward the person she'd bumped.

NEW FRIENDS!
[info]thebad_conrad

Maggy had been one of the lasts to finally arrive at the event. She never seemed to be able to be at things on time. It was one of her biggest flaws. Her watch was broken, but she just wore it because it was cute. She took a deep breath, moving through the crowd to the bar area. Her hair was pulled back in to a bun, and she wore a grey, short dress. It was something that a friend had let her borrow. She had no money these days, and just decided to mooch off her friends. She expected to see her brother around somewhere, but wasnt looking for him. He would probably flip when he saw her dress. The side were pretty loose, and if she ever bent down, you could see all her goodies. She exhaled, bringing a glass of champagne to her lips. It might be a long night, she thought to herself.

It was only about 10 minutes into her night when the lights went out. She jumped slightly, not exactly expecting it to happen. She closed her eyes, then opened them. She hated when her heart started pounding quickly. She she took a few steps forward, she was bumped in to by someone. She held on to her drink, smiling softly. "Sorry, I can't see to save my life." she said, placing her hand on Bianca's shoulder.

Glancing at the girl, she gave a small smile and nodded. "Storm will pass soon enough." She said, glancing back up at the lights as if they might flicker again. Luckily they seemed to be staying bright enough for now. "Hopefully they have a generator here, just in case the power goes out." She said, giving a reassuring smile. "Not that that'll happen." She said, glancing back over her shoulder. It was her nature as a doctor to reassure people of the best.

"And at least we have a fully stocked bar to keep us happy until the storm passes." She said, raising her glass a bit before she took a small sip from it.

Maggy nodded, smiling as she took another sip of her drink. She was glad when the lights began to flicker back on again. She wasnt exactly afraid on the dark, just not excited to be in a cramped area in the dark. She smiled, glancing at Bianca. "Exactly. As long as the bar is good, and there are a few snacks here and there, I'm fine." she said with a slight laugh. She extended her hand out to the woman. "Maggy Conrad." she said softly.

She was never uncomfortable with strangers. She was very friendly, even in a huge crowd like this. She would be the girl that had too many drinks, and would dance on the bar. She was going to restrain herself tonight, being as her brother was lurking around somewhere.

CARLY: BALLROOM: OPEN! (LEOBEN?)
[info]carlykins
2008-03-09 03:31 am UTC (link)
Carly had been enjoying the evening. Everyone seemed to be having fun, especially her. Between her three glasses of champagne, and dancing with Leoben. Her smiles and laughter turned in to a straight face. She hated the dark, ever since she was a little girl. She looked around, but her eyes had not adjusted. She bumped in to someone, blinking. "Oh I'm sorry." she said, laughing a little.

At the sound of the small announcement, she tried not to let herself get worried. She exhaled softly, pressing her hand against her chest. She was calming herself down. If they said everything was fine, it was fine she told herself.

Leoben had just been returning to Carly's side when the lights blacked out. There were only a few moments of black, in which Carly moved backwards to bump into his chest, before they flicked back on. Moving to her side so she knew he was there Leo gave a cheeky smirk, "You're just lucky Blondie," He said gesturing across the room to the woman he'd been hitting on moments ago, "Isn't the jealous type with you trying to cop a feel and all" He said flashing her a mock, shocked, face.

Carly laughed softly as she noticed it was Leo behind her. She would have hated to walk right in to someone and scary the living hell out of them. "I'm very lucky. I have the best looking date around." she said with a wink. She glanced across at the woman. She was cute, but not as cute as her, in her mind. "I just hope the bloody lights stay on. I hate to admit it, but I have a fear of the dark.." she said with a laugh. "But you'll protect me, right love?"

“Of course, Love” Leoben said with a small laugh as he moved his arm behind her back, his hand resting lightly on her waist, pulling her to his side. Just at that moment ‘blondie’ looked their way and Leo flashed her a charming smile, raising his chin slightly. The woman’s eyes moved to Carly before moving back to Leoben disapprovingly. Keeping eye contact with the woman he nodded his head towards Carly before giving a wink and another nod. The Woman, sadly, scowled at him before shaking her head and turning away.

Giving a short faux disappointed sigh he relaxed his hold on Carly, “Tis a shame, her pops was an oil man”, the hand on her waist moving up so his arm could drape across her shoulders casually.

LEO & ILLANA (the king and queen of quite a lot)
[info]i_calltheshots
2008-03-09 04:52 am UTC (link)
Leo had spent a vast majority of the evening mingling with city officials and tossing shit-eating grins in the general direction of the Connelly boys. He could play dirty, and still look good and kind doing it. Excusing himself from talking with the mayor himself, he clapped the older gentleman on the shoulder, promised to get in touch with him for a game of golf or something like that, and said he had been neglecting his wife for far too long.

He listened to the announcement and knew his statement of not spending enough time with his wife was true. He picked up two glasses of champagne before he wove through the crowd to find her. Finally spotting her, his fake smile took on a genuine bit to it, and he made his way over to her. "Have I mentioned that you look beautiful tonight?" He said as he leaned close to her to murmur against her ear.

And a very sexy king & queen they make, if I do say so myself!
[info]illana_marino
2008-03-09 05:10 am UTC (link)
Illana had never been a fan of schmoozing, but with her husband being who he was, she didn't really have any choice in the matter. And she had gotten much better at it as the years passed. While he went off to speak with the city officials, she took to speaking with their wives, sharing stories of her life with Leo, never anything too personal. She didn't like getting personal with people that she didn't know. She had received many compliments on her dress that evening, and she smiled every time. She had searched for the perfect dress to wear for quite some time, and had finally found it. The beaded pattern stretched all the way down to the very bottom of the dress, and it had a short train that dragged behind her as she walked.

Keeping her forced smile on her face, she nodded and laughed along with the other women she was speaking to, pretending that she actually cared what it was they were talking about. Her skills at that had grown, as well, and she smiled as she thought about it. Being married to Leo for so many years and made her quite an interesting woman with a multitude of talents. Including the intrigue she was able to fake when it came to things like this. Beginning to get bored with the whole act, she was about to excuse herself and walk away when she heard her husband's voice against her ear, and felt him behind her. Turning her head to glance at him, she smiled genuinely and took his offered glass of champagne. "A few times, actually, but it never hurts to be told again," she said, turning to face him.

Leo smirked a little and kissed her cheek before he stood up straight, his hand remaining on the small of her back. He glanced around the room as if he were looking for someone who might cause a disturbance. He was never completely relaxed when he was out at an event or meeting. He was "on the clock" so to speak of course, whenever he wasn't simply alone at home with his family.

"Enjoying yourself?" He asked before he sipped at champagne. He knew how much she disliked coming to these things, but the fact that she was there with him spoke volumes in itself. He'd have to remember to take her some place nice, just the two of them to make up for it. Plus the fact they were more or less stuck there for now, well, that was something he didn't like, but couldn't very well control. Might as well make the best of it.

She couldn't help but smile as she noticed his eyes scanning the crowd. He was always alert, no matter where they went. It was something she loved about him. But then again, she loved every single thing about him. Even the way he mumbled in his sleep. She had gotten so used to that mumbling that she couldn't sleep when it was quiet anymore. When he was away, she always tossed and turned, ending up reading a book or something instead.

Glancing back at him as he asked her if she was enjoying herself, she shrugged. "It's not the worst fundraiser I've ever been to," she said, following his lead and taking a sip of her champagne. "But, then again, I never really enjoy these things. Pretending I like everyone is just too much work," she said, then smiled up at her husband. "Luckily, when you come steal me away like that, I don't have to pretend anything," she said, reaching her arm up and locking it behind his neck. She was still just as in love with him now as the day she met him.

Norah had come to the party, not sure exactly why she'd come. Sure, she loved the time to dress up, be a girl, look pretty and look at all the other pretty. But she was swiftly getting bored. She'd hit the open bar. She'd danced a little. Now, she was sitting in a chair, staring at the room, trying to figure out just how many of the people in the place she might have had through her office.

She heaved a sigh, then stood up, stretching her legs and deciding that she was officially bored enough to brave the ferry back to land, get her car, and head home. It wasn't until she heard the wind whipping against the windows and rain that sounded more like hail pelting the roof that she remembered that there was a predicted Nor-Easter that had apparently not gone off the coast and dissipated like predicted.

Norah rolled her eyes, irritated with the weather. Then, then announcement came, and she grumbled obscenities under her breath. "God dammit, I don't want to be stuck on this fucking island." Norah grabbed the skirt of her dress near her hips, hiking it up over her shoes so she could walk faster. If she had to bribe someone to get her off the island, she would. She stormed up toward the stage, colliding hard with someone. She knocked backwards, stumbling into a chair.

"Hey, watch where the fuck you're going, asshole." She glared at the man who'd nearly knocked her on her ass, then laughed. "Jesus Christ, Ryan? We've got to stop running into each other with me cursing at you." She grinned at him. She hadn't seen him since they'd met up at the strip club by happenstance, and was more than a little giddy to be seeing him now.

Ryan was not the fundraiser type. At all. But, he had won the ticket to the thing in a poker game, and he figured he might as well go for the chance to watch and make fun of all the yuppies in Boston. And, of course, the open bar. Which, Ryan had taken advantage of. He wasn't technically drunk, but he wasn't sober either. He was having a great time, more fun than he thought he would have had.

Glancing around the place, he spotted the stage and decided that would be the best place to sit to see everyone. So, he made his way over there and climbed up onto it, sitting down in a chair and glancing down at all the rich people of Boston. He watched as someone came up onto the stage and announced that, due to the storm, everyone was stuck on the island. He snickered, watching people freaking out over that news. He couldn't help it. Briefly, Ryan wondered how these people would treat him, had they known he was pretty wealthy himself. Shrugging, he got up off of the stage and headed back to the stairs. His glass was empty, he wanted more free alcohol.

As he walked down the stairs, he ran right into someone. He dropped the empty plastic cup and his hands instinctively flew out to grab the person that he ran into before they fell down the steps. Even tipsy, Ryan's instincts were intact apparently. Though, being ran right into had a way of sobering you up a little bit. He pulled back and saw who it was that he ran into, and he snickered. "I think you just might have an anger management problem," he said, nodding his head. "You've got quite a little mouth on you," he pointed out, pointing at her and tsking playfully. He leaned closer. "What would daddy say?" he whispered into her ear before snickering again.

"Me? Ha. You're worse." She smirked at Ryan, shaking her head. "You just catch me at bad times. Like when my car is stuck in the snow, or when we've been stranded on a fucking ISLAND." Her voice raised, and she looked over Ryan's shoulder toward the stage, where the crew seemed to be gathering.

She was more than a little irritated, she was down right pissy. But the person who'd nearly knocked her on her ass was a welcome distraction. Norah had actually missed Ryan, but been too busy to make good on any of their loose plans that had come after the meetup. Then, she stopped calling, and became Flakey!Norah. Which she was good at, when she was working too hard.

Norah raised a brow as Ryan leaned in, smirking wider. "Daddy would say you're a bit too close to me, Mr. O'Reily." Norah didn't move back, instead keeping her stance where it was. She tilted her head, looking up at him. "How've you been, Ryan?"

Kayleigh leaned against the bar, a happy smirk on her face. She'd come with Murphy, and the two seemed to be having a good time. She sipped her beer, trying to avoid spilling it on her dress, as she'd already had a few. Tipsy was the right word for Kayleigh at that moment.

She swayed a little to the music filling the room, then stared at the ceiling as the announcement sounded, announcing everyone was stuck in the island. She furrowed her brow, then shook her head, not too worried about it. It was a hotel, after all. If they got really stuck, she'd slap down a credit card and get them a room for the night. Though, she wasn't 100% that they were actually renting rooms, or if the rooms were in any state to be rented... Her mind wandered, thinking about if they were stuck on the island all night what exactly would happen.

During her random train of thought, she saw Murphy heading back toward her. She grinned at him, and when he didn't return her smile, she looked concerned. As he came within hearing range, she spoke. "You okay? Don't worry too much about the storm, it'll be- HEY!" Murphy grabbed her arm, and started to pull her away from the bar. "What the hell is wrong with you?" She set her beer down and scurried after him, to avoid being pulled over.

The fund raiser hadn't really been something that Murphy had been looking forward to. He usually hated these things, and spent the entire thing just getting drunker and drunker, usually ending up passed out in a corner or something. It was true, he was probably the most 'disappointing' of the Connelly brothers, but he honestly didn't give a shit. And he had come to this thing with Kayleigh, so if things got too boring, they could always wander upstairs and find something much more interesting to do.

He had wandered away from her for a little bit to watch the storm. He was a big fan of thunderstorms, they were soothing to him. After a few minutes, he turned to find Kayleigh. He had had a few beers, and he was a bit tipsy himself. As he was walking inside, he ran into Jen. He smiled and talked to her for a little bit. Kayleigh was brought up, and Murphy smiled a dorky, happy smile. Jen then commented about how she was impressed that Murphy was so okay with dating a woman who had slept with one of his brothers. Murphy almost dropped his glass of beer. After demanding details from Jen, Murphy stalked off to find Kayleigh.

It was difficult to find her amongst all the people, but he spotted her leaning against the bar. He approached her, and noticed she was smiling at him. He shook his head, grabbing her arm as gently as he could, he wasn't going to hurt her. He was just a little pissed. Leading the way down some hallway and into a room that he didn't even know what it was for, Murphy shut the door and turned to glare at her. "When, exactly, were you planning on telling me that you had fucked one of my brothers?" he asked, raising a brow and crossing his arms.

It took Kayleigh a bit to keep up with Murphy in heels, but she managed. When he took her into a random room, she took a moment to look around, getting her bearings. She looked back to him as he closed the door, and saw a look she'd never seen on his face before.

What he said to her left her speechless. Her jaw fell open, and she matched his stance, immediately defensive. "I...." She started, stammering. "I wasn't going to tell you. How the fuck did you find out?" Only Matt knew. And unless Matt was feeling especially dickish, she doubted he told him. She wasn't even sure Matt was there.

Kayleigh stood, bringing her feet together, stiffening like she was cold. "I wasn't going to tell you because I know the stupid, competitive bullshit that goes on in your family causes all kinds of rifts, and no one needed to know. No one did know, except me and Matt. Why he even told you, I have no idea." She paused for a second, then smirked, shaking her head. "Jen told you."

She looked at him, and could read it in his face that she had. "God dammit." Kayleigh chewed on her lips for a second, then realized that she actually did want Murphy to know her reasons for not telling him, other than it was none of his business. "Look, it happened before I'd even met you. Hell, I met you because it happened. It was a one time thing, it meant nothing, and... You know what's gone on. You know how fucked up I was. Am."

Her nails dug into her arms, then she moved a step forward, reaching out to let her hands rest of Murphy's shoulders. "I didn't want you to know because it wasn't important to me. You, you're important to me. I knew it would only hurt you. I..." She wasn't going to apologize for it, since there was no real wrong doing. But she did feel bad for hiding it. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you, and you had to find out like this, but..." She shrugged.

When he remained stiff to her touch, Kayleigh dropped her hands from him, folding her arms over her chest again. She watched the floor, scuffing her toe along the cracks in the hardwood. "It happened. I can't take it back."
