Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
stranded!
Who: Everyone at the Party
What: Black Tie Ball; STORM!
Where: Shangri-La Hotel on an off-coast Island
When: MARCH 10; 9pm
Rating: TBD
Open? to EVERYONE!

Lights flickered twice in the ballroom, causing the band to stop. Without music and the joyful voices filling the room, a roll of thunder could be heard outside along with the rain coming down in sheets against the window. Guests glanced warily at the doors as the wind picked up, howling through the doors in the lobby left open.

So as not to cause alarm, the host of the evening jumped up onto the platform where the band was set up, picking up a microphone to garner everyone's attention.

"Folks! If I could have your attention please. The storm that we'd hoped would roll right past us seems to have decided to stick around. So right now all the launch boats have been docked. Now this isn't to cause any alarm, and we've still got a full bar, and the band is just getting revved up for another set, so eat, drink, be merry, and we'll ride out this storm just fine. Thanks!"

And with that, the band picked up, hoping to play out just another couple of hours until the storm passed.

[ mod-note; I decided to wait a little later than noon (obviously) because the beginning thread was going so well. It is now 4:30 (PST), and this is just the first thread of the night. If you want to wait for the next one, go ahead - the BLACKOUT thread will go up promptly @ 7:30pm (PST) ]

Murphy listened as Kayleigh explained what happened, his arms crossed tightly across his chest. He was angry, he couldn't help it. He didn't like thinking about his girlfriend having sex with any of his brothers. Especially Matt. Of all his brothers, why did it have to be Matt? Women clamored to that man like it was their job, and Murphy squared his jaw, looking away from her for a brief moment. When she brought up the fact that Jen must have told him, he didn't deny it. He glanced back at her, unable to hide the hurt in his eyes. She brought up the fact that it was in the past and he shook his head. He knew it was in the past, but it still pissed him off. What the hell.

When she moved closer to him, he wanted to take a step back, but he was unable to move at all. His arms were crossed so tightly, he was pretty sure they were starting to hurt, but he couldn't be sure. All he felt right now was the hurt that she had slept with Matt, and then hid it from him. Glancing down at the ground when she moved to put her hands on his shoulders, Murphy clenched his teeth together tightly. He swallowed hard when she mentioned that Matt was the reason she had met him to begin with. He ground his teeth together again, shaking his head. "Don't play the 'I was so fucked up' card, Kay," he said, his head shaking. He clicked his tongue, then moved his head, cracking his neck.

The longer she continued trying to apologize, Murphy's resolve was weakening. He cared about Kayleigh, he cared about her a lot. And it fucking scared the hell out of him. He didn't like knowing that she could make him feel this way. "I did some fucked up shit, too. But I told you about it. You know about everything that happened back in Vegas, Kay. That's the difference. I might have told you one night when we were both fucking wasted, but I told you," he said, running a hand through his hair, and then running a hand over his face. "I don't know, Kayleigh. I don't know," he said. "I know you can't take it back," he said, glancing down. He didn't know what to do.

Kayleigh wasn't sure what else to say. She'd been caught in something that she was vaguely aware might bite her in the ass, but she hadn't ever thought of a way out of it. She sighed heavily, hugging her arms around herself like she was cold.

Murphy reiterating that he told her everything, including what had happened in Vegas, only served to make her feel more like shit. She kept her eyes on the floor, her fingers nervously twisting her sleeves.

The thought that at that moment, because of her slip up to Jen, and Jen's accidental slip up to Murphy, she might lose Murphy altogether. Her eyes went to his, Kayleigh pained to see the hurt in his face. "I didn't do any of this to hurt you, Murph." She took a step forward, her face softening from the defensiveness that had been present before. "I don't want to lose you. I should've told you. I get that now." She reached out tentatively, touching his arm with her fingertips.

"I'm sorry. It's not much, but it's all I can say..." She looked concerned, feeling the stiffness and anger from Murphy. It was so different from his usual stance around her, and she didn't know how to respond. Even when they hadn't been dating, everything was easy between them. This had thrown all of that to hell, and it was her own fault.

"Tell me what I can do to fix this."

Murphy watched as she wrapped her arms around herself and nervously twisted her sleeves, unsure of what to do at this point. He was hurt, yes. But as well as being hurt that she had kept something like that from him, he was also pissed off that she slept with Matt. He was beginning to care for her, deeply, and whether it was childish or not he was angry that Matt had gotten to her first. In the back of his mind, he wondered if she compared him to Matt. Having been with both of them in bed. He had never been as good as Matt, to anyone. Not to their father, not to Patrick. Murphy had always come in second best to his brother. And here he was, debating once again inside his head if he was nearly as good as Matt. He loved his brother, he really did, but he also hated the prick sometimes.

He didn't move away from her when she touched him, unsure of what to do. He wanted to just tell her to forget it and pretend that he never brought it up, and then deal with the turmoil internally, but he knew that wouldn't help. He'd always wonder, and he'd always be pissed. And he didn't want his relationship with Kayleigh to piss him off. He cared about her and he wanted to be with her. Returning his gaze to her face as she told him that she was sorry, he sighed, running his hands over his head. Glancing into her eyes, he could tell that she really was sorry. His eyes wandered, focusing on a point behind her as he thought. He wished relationships came with some kind of a manual, telling you what to do and how to troubleshoot a fight like this. She spoke again and it drew his attention back to her. Shrugging, he sighed. "I don't know, Kayleigh. I don't know what you can do to fix it," he confessed.

He sounded defeated when he spoke again, and that scared Kayleigh. Her brows knit, and she watched him, her heart racing in her chest. She stared at him, trying to read him a little more. She wanted to just open up, unleash, tell him everything that had happened between then and now. That she avoided Matt most of the time, and that now she thought of him as more of a brother than anything else. That when she wasn't with Murphy, that she wanted to be. That she loved every minute they'd spent together, and if she knew that things would be the same that they were now, she'd take back sleeping with Matt in a heartbeat. That she'd change everything, if it meant they'd still be together.

Instead, she stood there, staring at him. Her eyes pleaded with his, and she found herself panicking. "Murphy, please. I want to fix this. You mean a lot to me, and I don't want to lose you over this." Her voice wavered, the thought of losing him hitting her a bit harder. She moved into him, letting her hands rest on his hips. She ached to pull him to her, cover his face in kisses, try to make it all better. But none of it seemed right.

"Just.. please, let me fix it. I don't know what to do."

Murphy watched her as she stood there, unsure what was going through her head. He wanted to just ignore that he heard Jen's slip. He almost wished she hadn't slipped, because then he could just go on not knowing. And he'd be happy right now instead of feeling the way he did. But he couldn't blame Jen, she didn't know. Kayleigh looked just as upset as he was, and he wanted to pretend he hadn't heard anything and just take her into his arms. But there would always be that nagging voice in the back of his head, wondering if she was comparing him to Matt.

When she spoke, he couldn't help but roll his lips into his mouth. He listened to what she had to say, and then shrugged. He watched as she moved closer to him, putting her hands on his hips. "Kayleigh ..." he started, but then she spoke again, asking him to let her fix it. "That's the problem, Kay. I don't know what you can do, either," he said. He reached down and took her hands off of his hips and dropped them at her sides, sighing. "I just ..." he trailed off, running his hands over his face. "I need time to think," he said. He gave her one last look and then walked around her, making his way to the door.

Great. They were stuck on this island, and all he wanted to do was go home and drink a bottle of Jack Daniels.

Kayleigh tried to say something to keep him from leaving, but nothing came. Her hands hung limply at her sides as Murphy passed her, and Kayleigh was desperately trying to rewind the situation, say something, anything, to make it all better.

"Please don't go," she managed quietly, turning to watch him as he left the room. "Murphy!" He moved out of her line of sight, and a loud sob choked off anything she could've said further. She was angry with herself for hiding it. She was upset that he'd found out the way he did. More than anything, her panic that she might lose him had turned to cold fear. He'd walked away.

Kayleigh held her head in her hands, her shoulder shaking with silent sobs.

Murphy heard her ask him not to leave, and he shut his eyes tightly as he continued walking out of the room. He wanted to go back into the room and wrap his arms around her, more than anything else, but he knew that wouldn't be very productive. It wouldn't help the situation. He ran his hands over his head, right outside the door and he leaned his head against the wall. His eyes closed tightly, fighting the urge to go back into the room and apologize, telling her it didn't matter to him and that all that mattered was that she was with him now. He wished that was the case, he wished it didn't matter.

Hearing her shout his name, he closed his eyes tightly again and pushed himself off the wall, walking back down the hall. If he was honest with himself, being so upset about the situation had a lot to do with the fact that he was falling for her, very hard. He wanted to just make things better, forget anything ever happened. But he was just so hurt, he couldn't help it. He knew Matt had slept with other women he dated, but none of that hurt as badly as it did with Kayleigh. Walking back out into the main party room, he ran a hand over his head, sighing. He didn't feel like mingling with these fucking people anymore. Making his way outside again, he sat underneath an awning, just watching the storm over the water. It was a beautiful view, and he kind of wished he had Kayleigh here to share it with him.

Kayleigh made her way over to a chair near the wall, sitting down and trying to gather herself. She was going to head back into the party, get to the bar, and drink herself into a stupor deep enough to make herself forget the night. She just hoped someone helped her onto the boat to get home once the storm let up.

She took a deep breath, the inhale shuddering in her chest. Wiping her face and noticing her hands were shaking, Kayleigh shook her head, unsure if she would be able to get up and walk any time soon. She hadn't felt this kind of scared before, ever. She was more than worried, she was petrified that Murphy was going to rethink the whole thing, give up on ever trying to make this work.

With a heavy sigh, she stood, and as she did, the lights went out. Kayleigh stopped in her tracks, trying to speed the adjustment of her eyes in the dark by closing them. When she opened them again, she was still in pitch dark, but she could see light coming from the open door leading to the hall. "Fuck." She reached out and groped around, finding the wall behind her. She slid her hand along, heading toward the light coming from the hallway.

Her heart pounded in her chest, her pulse coursing in her ears. She was nervous. They were already trapped on this island, and now, there was no power. A fear she didn't quite understand came over her, and once she was out in the dim hallway, she leaned against the wall. "Is anyone here?" Her voice wavered with the fear she was feeling, sounding mousy and very unlike Kayleigh.

Murphy was sitting outside underneath the awning, watching the storm as it happened right before his eyes. As he watched, he sighed, almost wanting to walk out into the rain, even though it looked like it was freezing cold, and it was raining insanely hard. He sighed, running his hands over his face and then leaned forward. His elbows propped on his knees and he rested his head in his hands, staring out at the water. He had always loved storms, even as a little kid. He loved watching them, he thought it was probably one of the most peaceful feelings in the world. But he felt anything other than peaceful at this moment, his heart felt like it was being torn in two directions, and he didn't know which way to tell it to go. And it was confusing, and he hated it.

He wasn't sure exactly how long he sat there thinking, but he was brought out of his thoughts by the sound of someone screaming inside. His eyebrows narrowed and he turned, noticing that the power had gone out. He assumed the scream had been a startled one, or at least that was what he had hoped. Getting up off the chair he had been sitting on, he made his way inside and glanced around, looking for sign of anyone he knew to find out what the fuck was going on. There were murmered whispers of rumors about someone being injured and Murphy couldn't help it. His mind went right to Kayleigh. He immediately thought the worst, and then he took off for the hallway that he had come out of not too long ago.

"Kayleigh?" he called softly, glancing around. It was too dark to see anything, and Murphy hated it. He kept walking toward the room he had come out of earlier, and then he heard a scared and quiet voice asking if anyone was there. He recognized that voice, that was the voice of the woman who wouldn't leave his mind. "Kay?" he called, making his way over toward her. He noticed she was leaning against the wall and he grabbed her, his eyes slowly adjusting to the darkness. "Are you okay? Are you hurt?" he asked, searching franticly for any injuries. He wasn't sure why he seemed convinced that she had been hurt. Maybe it was his fears surfacing.

She was started to calm down in the dark when she heard the gunshot. Immediately her panic rose, and she started to move along the wall, trying to get away from the sound. Kayleigh stopped when she remembered everything, that the warring families were in the same hotel, that even though it was supposed to be an unspoken truce at events like these, someone always shits on the coats.

Her heart raced in her chest. Murphy was the brother to the head of the Connelly clan, and the Marino's were here. En masse. What if something happened, maybe in his anger he shoved the wrong person out of his way and they pulled a gun? Tears started again, and Kayleigh started running scenerio after scenerio over her in head.

She stood, glued to the spot, too scared to move. She didn't want to run toward the gunshot and find Murphy dead on the floor, their last words to each other ones of anger. Her breath shuddered as she tried to collect herself enough to move, and she heard a voice calling her name.

"Murph?" Her turned toward the calls, and moved along the wall. He came to her, and started inspecting her to see if she was hurt, and in the dim light she did the same to him. "I'm okay. You okay?" She ran her hand along his chest, feeling for wounds. When she found nothing, she threw her arms around him and hugged him tightly. It was instinct, and she immediately thought better of it, but didn't let him go. "I'm glad you're okay."

Murphy felt a huge surge of relief flood through him when he didn't feel any injuries on her, and she told him that she was okay. He closed his eyes and wrapped his arms around her waist as she threw her arms around him, and he sighed softly. Nodding, he rolled his lips into his mouth. "Yeah, I'm okay," he stated, his eyes still closed. He ran his arms slowly over her back, his head turning to bury his nose into her hair. He loved the way she smelled, and he had been so scared just a second ago. Scared that she was the target of that bullet, scared that he'd lost her forever.

Pulling back out of the hug, he put both hands on the sides of her face. "I don't want to lose you, Kayleigh," he told her seriously, his thumbs carressing over the skin of her cheeks. "I'm still upset, I'm still hurt, but I don't want to lose you," he added, making sure she knew everything wasn't peachy keen and perfect again. He still didn't know how he was going to deal with the knowledge of what he had found out tonight, but he'd find a way to deal with it. The thought of losing her for good just scared the hell out of him. He closed his eyes and rested his forehead against hers, his arms going around her again. "Don't hide anything else from me," he said softly, his eyes opening up to look at her. "Promise me," he added, waiting for her eyes to open and look at him. "Promise me that you're not going to hide anything else from me," he continued.

Unable to keep himself from doing so, he raised his head and pressed a kiss to her forehead, resting his cheek against it afterwards. He let his breathing return to normal, now that he knew she was okay. Now all Murphy had to do was get over his self esteem issue when it came to his girlfriend sleeping with his brother.

Kayleigh clung to Murphy, nuzzling her face into his neck. Her heart continued to pound in her chest, and she resisted some when he pulled away from the hug. She bit her lip, watching him as he took her face in his hands.

She nodded, agreeing to everything he said. "I'll tell you everything, I swear it. I'm so sorry, baby." She turned her head and kissed the palm of his hand, reaching her hands out to grab his hips and pull him back into her. "I never wanted to hurt you, I swear it. Anything you want to know, anything. I'll tell you."

Sighing softly as he kissed her forehead, Kayleigh smiled. She knew everything wasn't okay, but the fact that Murphy was willing to try, it meant everything to her. She squeezed his hips with her fingers, tugging gently at the fabric of his pants. She wrapped her arms around his waist and pulled him into her a bit more, sighing again. "I'm way more into you than I thought..."

Murphy listened to her apologies and then swearing that she'd tell him everything. He swallowed hard and then nodded, one of his hands reaching up to tuck some of her hair behind her ear and then running through it. "I know you didn't want to hurt me," he said, nodding. He kissed her forehead again, sliding his arms around her in a hug. "I'm sorry too," he said, nodding. It had to have been one of the shortest fights in the history of lover's quarrels, but he had thought she was shot for awhile there. And he just kind of freaked out. Everything was far from being perfect between them again, and he knew that.

As he held her like that, he let out a low sigh. He was still jealous that Matt had slept with Kayleigh. That was something that he'd have to work to get over. He was so tempted to ask her if she compared he and Matt, but then again, he didn't want to know the answer. He wasn't sure he'd be able to stomach it if he found out that when they were together, Kayleigh thought about his brother. Shaking his head, he pushed all those thoughts out of his head. He didn't want to think of his brother when he was alone with Kayleigh. Glancing down at her as she pulled him closer and spoke, he let a small smile cross his lips. "It's because of my irresistible charm," he said, his hand carressing her cheek again. He pressed his lips lightly against hers, and the kiss was one that silently told her that he felt the same way.

"You don't have anything to be sorry about," Kayleigh said quietly, her fingers scratching lightly at his lower back. "I screwed up, I know that. I'll do whatever it takes to get past this, I swear it." She was swearing a lot of things, but meant every one of them. Murphy was more important to her than she thought, and having him in her life was something that just had to be. She couldn't bear the thought of losing him.

She nuzzled his neck, nodding as he spoke. "Yes, it's your charm. And the fact that you're good to me." Maybe a little better than I deserve, she thought, but kept it quiet. She smiled against his lips as he kissed her, her arms tightening their grip around his waist. She had fallen completely for him, and hadn't stopped falling.

Murphy did have something to be sorry about. He had to be sorry that he wasn't confident enough in their relationship that he worried about why she was really with him. Was she with him because she cared about him, or was she with him because he was there? And Matt would never really enter into a relationship, so was Murphy just second best? That was why he had to be sorry. But instead of hurting her by telling her those thoughts, he just smiled at her and reached his thumbs up, wiping away the tear streaks from under her eyes from earlier. He hated that he had made her cry.

His arms tightened around her as she nuzzled his neck, smiling. "Yeah, yeah. I can't help but be good to you, Kay. You were my best friend before any of this, and now it's just that much better," he said truthfully. He felt her arms tighten around his waist and he pulled back from the kiss, placing one on the tip of her nose before he just held her in his arms, his eyes closed. He was head over heels for this girl, he knew that. He wouldn't deny it. He let his hand slowly run through her hair as he held her.

They stood there, hugging each other, Kayleigh basking in Murphy's affections. Sure, she was still really worried, but she'd also come to realize just how committed to him she was. Kayleigh knew it was going take some time for the two of them to be completely back to normal, but she was going to work hard on letting him know she wasn't hiding anything. She'd even go so far as to allow him to ask her anything, and give him a completely honest answer. Kayleigh mental noted the idea, and would propose it to him later, when they weren't standing in a darkened hotel, stranded on an island with their mortal enemies nearby, some apparently packing weapons.

She let her hand run along his back, leaning into him heavily. She felt safe now, standing there in Murphy's arms, her mind not really worrying about who got hurt. There was an audible commotion coming from the lobby of the hotel, but she didn't care. Her time was to be spent in Murphy's grasp. "You were my best friend too. You still are." She smiled up at him, her arms tightening a little around him. "This the best thing I've ever had, and I don't want to fuck it up." She sighed, then looked at him. "I don't want to lose you," she murmured, her face pressing into his chest a little. She pressed her lips to the fabric of his shirt, nuzzling her nose into him.

Murphy was just as comfortable there with her as she was with him. He didn't plan on losing her, even though he was still a little angry, and a little hurt. Well, he was more upset than angry. Angry was a bad word to use. Clearing his throat as she spoke, he glanced down at her and ran his hands over her cheeks and kissed her softly for a few moments before pulling away. "Your'e not going to lose me, Kay. I promise," he said. "At least, not until you get sick of me," he added, giving her a small smile. He closed his eyes and kissed her forehead as she pressed her face into his shirt.

He couldn't help it when his smile grew as she told him that this was the best thing she'd ever had. He nodded. "Me too," he said softly, his arms tightening around her. "And who would have thought, meeting you in the Firecracker, that it would have lead to this?" he asked, smiling down at her. He remembered that day like it was yesterday. She had come into the bar, and Murphy's eyes hadn't left her from the moment she entered until she noticed he was staring at her and came over. He smiled at the memory, kissing her forehead again.

Kayleigh smiled up at Murphy as he reassured her she wasn't going to lose him, then scoffed as he said 'until you get sick of me'. She shook her head, smiling softly. "Never." His lips on her forehead drew another smile, and Kayleigh couldn't help but cling to him tighter.

She nuzzled him again, her fingers pressing into his lower back, trying to hold him that little bit closer to her. "I might have guessed, but I would've underestimated all of it." She looked up at him again, bringing a hand to his face. Her thumb drew along his cheek, and she just watched him. She remembered their first meeting like it was yesterday, Kayleigh giving off a meek vibe that Murphy seemed to see right through. He saw past the cloud of bullshit surrounding her, and saw her. She'd liked him immediately, but had no idea where all of it would end up.

And now, she only hoped it would continue on a forward track, and that her fuck up wouldn't derail the whole thing. She prayed it ended up well, and Kayleigh wasn't the praying type.

She sighed heavily, and as she did so, the lights came back on. She looked around quickly, seeing a few other stray guests in the hallway, heading toward the commotion coming from the lobby. Kayleigh didn't remotely care. All she cared about then was there, in her arms. She pressed her forehead to his neck, her arms squeezing him. "Looks like the lights are on again. You want to go find out what's going on?" She hoped he said no.

He laughed at her and tilted his head to the side slightly, glancing down at her. "Never is a long time, Kayleigh. Who knows, you could get annoyed with me and get sick of me tomorrow," he pointed out, his arms tightening around her. He held her to him, running his hands up and down her back. He snickered as she said that she would have guessed, and he shook his head. "You might have guessed that we would have ended up sleeping together, but you never would have guessed that we'd be ... us," he said, scratching his head. He almost said 'in love', but he stopped himself. He wasn't sure if it was too soon for that, or if she felt that way about him. He was pretty sure that he was falling in love with her, but he didn't want to screw anything up and end up scaring her away.

Glancing behind him towards the lobby, he noticed that there was some commotion. He furrowed his brow, and then shook his head. "Nah, people are probably just freaking out because the lights came back on again," he said, his head shaking. He licked his lips and glanced down at her, tucking her hair behind her ear. He closed his eyes and leaned against the wall near where they were standing and pulled her against him, holding her tightly.

Kayleigh smiled up at Murphy, nodding. "I know never is a long time. I'm not worried about it. Like I said, never." While Kayleigh didn't like the situation that had caused this entire conversation, she was happy with where it was going. Everything was out in the open, and while they'd decided that they were in a relationship awhile ago, the things coming out now had never really been said before. She was feeling a weight lifting off her shoulders, knowing that even in the worst of situations, she could talk to Murphy, and that she wasn't going to scare him off with the stupid shit inside of her head.

She listened to his voice in his chest as he spoke, the deep reverberations comforting in some odd way. She glanced up at him as he paused, seeing something in his eyes as he looked at her. When he continued with the generalization of 'us', Kayleigh smiled. "No, you're right. I'm not sure I could've predicted this." She squeezed him, feeling closer to him than she had before tonight. She could sense they'd moved to some different part of their relationship, something deeper. If she weren't so terrified of the word, she'd even say she loved him.

Kayleigh leaned into Murphy as he leaned into the wall, not wanting to move. She knew that since the lights were back up, the storm had probably passed, and they would be able to leave on the ferries back to the mainland. Nodding as Murphy said it was probably just a reaction to the lights, she sighed, smiling to herself. She pulled away from him a little, leaning up onto her toes and pressing a kiss to his lips.
