stranded!
Who: Everyone at the Party
What: Black Tie Ball; STORM!
Where: Shangri-La Hotel on an off-coast Island
When: MARCH 10; 9pm
Rating: TBD
Open? to EVERYONE!

Lights flickered twice in the ballroom, causing the band to stop. Without music and the joyful voices filling the room, a roll of thunder could be heard outside along with the rain coming down in sheets against the window. Guests glanced warily at the doors as the wind picked up, howling through the doors in the lobby left open.

So as not to cause alarm, the host of the evening jumped up onto the platform where the band was set up, picking up a microphone to garner everyone's attention.

"Folks! If I could have your attention please. The storm that we'd hoped would roll right past us seems to have decided to stick around. So right now all the launch boats have been docked. Now this isn't to cause any alarm, and we've still got a full bar, and the band is just getting revved up for another set, so eat, drink, be merry, and we'll ride out this storm just fine. Thanks!"

And with that, the band picked up, hoping to play out just another couple of hours until the storm passed.

[ mod-note; I decided to wait a little later than noon (obviously) because the beginning thread was going so well. It is now 4:30 (PST), and this is just the first thread of the night. If you want to wait for the next one, go ahead - the BLACKOUT thread will go up promptly @ 7:30pm (PST) ]

JOHN IN THE BALLROOM (OPEN!)

John had been attending the event with his Mother, but anyone who knew John well knew that he was always attending such functions in tow of Lynn Conrad who was always pleased as punch to show her son off to her friends. While he was happy to keep his Mother company, John Conrad was not happy to be thrown to a pack of old woman who had a knack for being a little too touchy-feely, so when the first opportunity presented itself, John combined all the knowledge he’d learnt in both the Navy and the FBI and snuck away.

Sitting in the corner of the ballroom, next to a conveniently placed tray of appetizers, John Conrad glanced up at the chandelier curiously as the lights began to flicker.

He’d been expecting a storm, but he hadn’t been expecting one that bad and then there was the mention that the boats had been docked, a comment that sent his mind into overdrive and made him feel more than a little uneasy. Paranoia. It came with the career; one of the hardest things to learn in his line of work, was when the constant paranoia was unnecessary. Shifting uncomfortably in his seat, John picked an appetizer and passed what he felt off as unnecessary.

For Even Little Old Me?

Callan had arrived late, getting in just as the sky opened up and started to pour down rain, and she looked with some annoyance out on the sudden storm. Just like the weather to do this, now that she was out here in the middle of nowhere. And the boats had all been docked? Swell.

After the lights blipped on and off for the second time, a passing waiter and a tray of fresh drinks distracted the redhead, and she swiped a glass of white wine to sip at it as she scanned the room. No sign of anyone she knew yet, although in this crowd it might take a closer look to find out who was friendly and who wasn't.

She found a seat out of the crush, having decided to sit it out. If nothing else, there was food and drink. There was also bound to be someone passably interesting to talk to. She could be social when she felt like it. With a drink in her hand, (ah, alcohol, the great social lubricant) she even enjoyed it.

Looking for a distraction, John turned his attention towards the woman who had just taken a seat beside him. Holding out the tray, he offered the red-head an appetizer, "I had to mug a waiter to get this tray" he lied, a friendly grin crossing his face as he waved his other hand at the assortment of tiny foods on the tray, "You're more than welcome to share them with me, but I should warn you that when the waiter rats me out, you may unwittingly become my accomplice"

"Thank you, kind sir." The redhead picked up a small sandwich and bit into it, thinking maybe this wouldn't be such a drag after all. She needed to get out of the house more often anyway. Even with the lack of familiar faces, she could still schmooze with the best of them.

"Didn't expect it to become a torrent this quickly," she remarked to the stranger off-handedly, sipping at her drink again. "Hope it blows on past before the lights go out for good."

John turned in his chair in an effort to get a better look at the stranger, “Yeah” he agreed with a grimace, he’d seen it too many times; how crazy people could get when the lights went out, it never ceased to amaze him, “I’m John” he added, holding out a hand towards the woman sitting beside him.

JOHN AND FAITH BONDING TIME!

Having spent a majority of the evening chatting with her girlfriends, Faith felt the need to pay at least some attention to the men in her life. Though she couldn't find Lance for the life of her, she had spotted John just before the lights began to flicker. She glanced up, and listened to the man speaking on stage. Well, wonderful. She was having a good enough time that she wasn't concerned that she may not have an "out" for the next few hours.

She glanced around when the man finished talking, and patted the back of a woman slightly older than her, who, from Faith's training, she could tell was slightly agitated. She smiled a bit. "Don't worry, you'll just have to pay the sitter a little more." She gave her a comforting smile before weaving back through the crowd to find John. Her dress was hardly conducive to storm-weather, but oh well. "Johnny boy." She chirped, half-skipping before she plopped down next to him and rested her chin on his shoulder. "Share the wealth." She said, reaching for a bite of whatever delicate little appetizer filled the tray next to him.

John turned, pleased to note that Faith had found him. He had to give her credit; in an entire room full of men all dressed in black, she'd managed to find him, "Kudos on finding me" he replied, sending a nod Faith's way, "As a female, is it hard to find a male you know, when everyone is wearing a tux? Because I think it might be how the people of one culture all look the same to the people of another culture"

Reaching forward, he pushed the tray of appetizers across the table and towards Faith, "It's kind of like a box of chocolates" Lance started, adapting the infamous line from the movie Forest Gump, "The green ones, I think they're curried or something, because they taste like ass, but the orangeish ones are alright"

"I know, it's like a game of where's waldo? in here." She said, grinning a bit. She considered his comment and nodded after a moment. "Yeah well." She ruffled her hand in his hair and took another appetizer. "I'd know that rad haircut of yours anywhere. Even if you do look like a penguin." She smiled a cheeky grin at him and cocked her head to the side before leaning back in her seat, crossing her legs to get comfortable.

"Life is like a box of chocolates..." She repeated, chuckling a little. "Take a bite out of everything until you find something you like." She said, wrinkling her nose at the green ones before reaching for an orange one. "So John, you get lucky yet? It's not like you to be in one place for more than an hour without having girls on each arm. Don't tell me you're losing your touch."

Reaching out to the tray, he plucked one of the preferred orange appetizers, popping it into his mouth, before poking one of the green snacks, "I wish I hadn't taken a bite out of hors d'Ass, no amount of mouth wash is going to make me forget the injustice I have suffered"

"Are you kidding?" John asked as he waved a hand vaguely towards the other occupants of the ballroom, "Lori would kick my ass, I'm not even kidding, she may look entirely harmless, but it's all a sham"

She chuckled and nodded, leaning her elbow against the table. Glancing over at him, she smiled. "Well, at least you didn't spit it out and put it back on the tray right?" She paused, eying him. "...Right?"

Faith gave him a beaming smile at his mention of Lori. "You've gotten to be such a good boy. I'm proud of you." She said, smiling as she took another small thing that looked like a shrimp wrapped in something. "I like Lori a lot." She mused, nodding to affirm her point. "You better not screw it up." She said, giving him a cheeky grin. "Cause when she's done with your ass, I'll kick the shards."

John suppressed a laugh, returning Faith’s glance with a look of complete innocence. Eventually, he couldn’t help it, he let out a snort of laughter before giving Faith two thumbs up, “No” he replied shaking his head, “I didn’t spit it out and put it back on the tray”

He felt a little unsettled by Faith’s reaction, girls had a habit of banning together - he’d learnt a long time ago that if you wronged one, several more would swoop down like a pack of vultures looking to tear a man apart, “I don’t plan on screwing it up” John replied honestly, Lori made him happy, they made a good team and at the moment he couldn’t imagine why he’d do anything to jeopardize that, “Gez Faith, get some Faith”

Faith swatted his arm with a closed fist and shook her head. "Good." She said, popping one more of the little balls of deliciousness into her mouth. Really, it was unfair to have really good food in bite-sized portions. It made it far too easy to eat a lot.

Faith rolled her eyes at his comment and laughed. "Original, really." She said, scrunching her nose in his general direction. Taking on a serious note, she nodded. "Well good, that's good." It was actually nice to have a girl around that Faith actually approved of. Not that he needed her approval, she still gave it anyway. "But we all know that everyone is just second best in your heart." She gave him a sweet smile, letting that sentence hang in the air for a minute. "To Lance, of course."

John nodded towards the tray of appetizers on the table next to Faith, “You better go easy on those things, or you’ll-” he didn’t bother to voice the next part of his statement, preferring instead to use gestures. With a stupid-grin on his face, he made a ballooning motion with his arms, to indicate just ow much weight his friend would gain, “You’ll have to wear Lance’s tux to the wedding, you’d look like Rosie Odonnell”

Clutching a hand over his heart, John gave an exaggerated sigh, “Ever since we first laid eyes on each other at training camp and discovered we were both wearing shirts stating that fat kids are harder to kidnap”
