Who: Crystal and Desi (NPC'd familiars)
Where: Crystal's home
When: 8:00 p.m.

'I can't believe you're cooking a full meal on a workday.'

"I've done it before!" Crystal defended herself against the bluebird as she checked the oven for what had to be the tenth time. She wouldn't admit it to anyone who asked, but she'd made an unusual run out to the store to pick up a few things so that she could make something nice for dinner. Though to tell the truth she had been craving pasta and this was an excellent excuse to try out that new garlic penne with roasted tomatoes recipe she'd gotten from Elise. That she also had a tart baking in the oven was just... maybe Pretty was right and she'd gone a little overboard, but Desi didn't have to know that. "Don't you dare tell her." The tart still needed a bit of time before it was ready, but it shouldn't be too long and the pasta was ready.

'My beak is sealed!' Pretty fluttered over to land on Crystal's shoulder as she started setting the table. 'Hey, what are you feeding the fox? You don't have any meat.'

"Well. Either she can eat some of the pasta or she can go root around in the garden and see if there are any bugs to her liking."

'What if she eats someone?'

Crystal sighed, setting the plates on the table. "She's a familiar, Pretty. She's not going to eat one of my pets if I ask her not to."

'You know what I think?'

"What do you think?"

'I think-' Luckily, Crystal was saved from hearing the thoughts of her familiar by the sound of the bell by the door going off. A smile broke across her face. "They're here!" Some women, or even men, would've stopped to check their reflection in the mirror on their way to the door, but not Crystal. She was pretty sure the red plaid shirt she'd put on was free of stains, there wasn't anything living in her hair... she was good! So she opened the door without a thought spared towards how she looked and turned her smile onto the redhead on the other side. "Hi Desi!" Nearby one of her cats hissed at the sight of the fox. Crystal, on the other hand, crouched down and held her hand out towards her. "And you must be Hatee. Very pleased to meet you and please come in."

Desi was delighted with how well Hatee and Crystal were getting along. Not that she doubted either one's social skills, but still, it was nice. She laughed at Crystal's face, making a mental note to also thank Reggie later. With her mess of a life Desi didn't make a lot of friends, not those which lasted anyway, but this was a very good start. As the cat zoomed by Desi looked down, chuckling, head darting back up at a sudden voice in her head. And what she had said, too.

She waved at the bird with amusement in her eyes. "Aptly named!" And also, a blue bird. Just like Snow White in the Disney movie. Desi grinned at Crystal. "Look at those Snow White genes! Blue bird and everything!"

'Ooooh really? Hi yourself, Pretty!' Hatee chimed in. This was shaping up to be perfect.

Following Crystal into the kitchen, Desi marveled at the lovely smell of food coming from it. "I love pasta!" She said, grinning. Hatee followed along, looking around.

'It's okay, Pretty's got me covered. Right Pretty?'

"What can I say? If the shoe fits, wear it. Although that's Cinderella." Crystal chuckled at the Snow White comparison, though she did have to admit it was pretty true. Her and Reggie both slotted into it that well and they definitely got it from their mother. She didn't mind. "So long as the Evil Queen doesn't come and try to take my heart, I think I'll stay with it. I have yet to live with any dwarves, but I mean, if you find any who need a place to stay..." She winked at Desi, pleased that Pretty hadn't put her off with that comment.

'I like her,' Pretty confided to Crystal before turning her attention to Hatee. 'Yep really, there's this one spot that's really good for worms. Do you like worms? I like worms.'

"Really don't want to be hearing about your love of worms when I'm about to eat pasta, Pretty." Crystal nudged Snow, her white cat who had apparently decided he wasn't afraid of Hatee, to move out of the sink so she could drain the pasta. "Don't mind him, he likes water... he's weird." Snow mewed and lashed his tail, sniffing the air near Desi. "He's also an absolute baby and if you don't pet him, he might cry at you."

'Absolutely! D'you wanna go now? She's about to drain that stuff and they'll be eating. I think they can do that without help.' The bird tilted her head at Crystal. 'Right?'

The earth elemental rolled her eyes. "Yes, Pretty, I can eat pasta and drink wine without choking myself. Speaking of." She nodded towards where she'd left the open wine bottle along with two glasses. "Care to pour while I dish up? I went with a white, goes better with this than a red would." She poured the boiled pasta into a strainer. "This may be a really weird question, but did you have a strange day?"

Snickering at the mention of yet another fairytale, Desi was pleased to see the comparison didn't bother Crystal. It was her favorite thing about Reggie - and now, her, too. Her smile turned into a grin at the wink, and Desi nodded. "I promise to give them your address if I do. Meanwhile, I'm not saying they help you dress in the morning but you have the loving animals of all kinds thing taken care of."

'I like worms, sure.' Hatee got a little one-track minded when she was hungry, Desi knew that very well. She chuckled at the cat in the sink, waving a finger in front of his nose before going to pet him between the ears. "Awwww who's a cutie? You are!"

'Right, let's get down to business, they're fine.' Said Hatee, making for the door to the garden. Meanwhile Desi grabbed the glasses and the bottle, doing as her new friend asked her to. "Strange day? Make that a strange week." Desi turned to Crystal, head tilted. "Why, did you?"

"Awesome!" Crystal imagined what it would be like to live with dwarves, but then she supposed it wouldn't be much different than living with men. Which she had done and she didn't think she'd particularly enjoyed it after awhile. But she didn't think Grumpy and Happy would come stomping along for real anytime soon so she was pretty safe. "If they helped me dress then I'd have so much more free time in the morning... or I'd look terrible. Probably a mix of both." Crystal laughed, imaging Pretty helping her with her hair while Snow got her shoes... it'd be hilarious. Too bad they weren't all familiars or she might be able to make it happen at least once.

"I can't help but love them," the earth elemental admitted, smiling when Desi gave into Snow's demands for attention. He was purring loudly and kneading his paws on the counter. "I mean, they're sweethearts and they keep me company in exchange for food. Not a whole lot that they ask for." That and she had a really bad habit of getting attached to the ones she was just supposed to be nursing back to health. Hence the stranger animals in her backyard and the sheer number of them. Crystal wasn't about to get rid of any of them any time soon and she hoped that she wouldn't have to. "You have a fan for life now. Don't be surprised if he tries to claim your lap later."

Pretty swooped down to land on Hatee's back, nestling in so that she could get out through the modified cat-flap too. 'To the worms!' was the last thing that Crystal heard from her before she, presumably, got on with telling Hatee where to find dinner.

The pasta made its way back into the pot so that Crystal could add in the sauce and roasted tomatoes. She gave a shrug of one shoulders as she mixed, unsure exactly of what to say. "Yeah," she settled on at last. "I really did. I swear it's like I forgot every damn thing about my life. And today I remembered it all." And today she was going to drink at least half that bottle of wine to get over it. "Like yesterday I didn't have a clue why your last name would be familiar, and then today I know without having looked at anything. Weird, right?" Finished, she lifted a piece of pasta and tasted it, making a 'mmmmm' sound as she did. "Dinner is so ready." A moment later and she'd dished it up, nodding her head towards the table as she held both plates. "Ladies first."

Laughing heartily, Desi shook her head. "Oh, you'd look fine." She said, dismissing the thought with a hand gesture. Crystal seemed like the sort of woman who would make a burlap sack work. Then again, Desi thought that of both her sisters, her mom and her aunt Gia, too. And herself, a little.

"It's true. Easier to deal with than people sometimes." She replied, a sigh coming out at the end of the sentence as she looked distracted by the delightful kitty. After a moment Desi looked up to smile at Crystal, shrugging. "Oh, don't worry. I've had a cat for years, I know what that's like. I keep one of those hair removing sticky rolls in my car at all times."

Eyes widening, Desi looked at Crystal with an expression of surprise. "Me too! Half my family history was just...gone. I firmly believed things that never were, I..." She looked down, smile faltering. "I couldn't remember my sister's death. Like she'd never existed." Desi snapped out of it at the announcement of dinner, smiling again at Crystal. She refrained from making a joke about how they should both sit at the same time, if it was 'ladies first', and made her way to the table.

"Did it feel like effortless bliss to you too?"

I like her, Crystal thought, grinning when Desi laughed like that. It was a good laugh and she had not met enough women who would go ahead and let out a nice, loud laugh so soon after meeting someone. Because women were supposed to titter or giggle and not laugh. She was going to say something about it when she had the thought again that maybe... maybe no. Maybe it was better not to say. A day ago she would have, but a day ago she hadn't remembered everything that had ever happened in her life or the circumstances that she'd heard whirled around Desi's. So maybe no. "This is why I love my animals," she chirped instead. "But good. It should get any hair you get off you when you visit." That she'd implied Desi would want to visit again had definitely happened, but she didn't think she'd call attention to it and just let it hang there instead.

Crystal felt a lurch of sympathy for Desi and before she could stop herself she'd reached out and squeezed her shoulder. What? She was an earth elemental and a firm believer that hugs and touches were good things that everyone needed to have! "It's not your fault," she murmured as she set the plates down, taking her seat and nudging another cat out of the way of her feet. They were always begging after her dinner like she didn't give them enough of their own. "Whatever happened, happened to all of us." She flipped a piece of hair back and shrugged. "I'm sorry about your sister. I know it won't help, but I completely forgot that I'd lived anywhere but Scarlet Oak and." She paused for dramatic effect, gesturing with her pasta-laden fork. "I forgot that I was divorced. Or had ever been married. I was way happier not remembering that." Effortless bliss was right. She took a mouthful and chewed slowly, smiling when she swallowed. "But I got a new friend out of it. Reality's not that bad right now." The wine wasn't even that bad.

"How's your pasta?"

The implication that Desi might visit again did not sound at all strange to her; she had few female friends who weren't also family, and Crystal was pretty great so far. "I'll have some by the door when you come over to my place instead, too." She offered, smiling. Well, it was only logical that it might happen eventually. Desi wasn't sure why, when Crystal had such a nice house and Desi had a glorified bedroom, but still.

The physical gesture of sympathy was felt deep down in the tangle of what were Desi's emotions at the moment. It felt really nice, really warm, and exactly what she needed. "I know, but...It's messed up anyway." She explained, shaking her head as she took her seat. Desi nodded in thanks at what Crystal said about her sister, leaning in with interest as her new friend explained her own time of it. By the end of it Desi's nose was scrunched up, her top lip drawn almost to a sneer. "What the hell kind of magic is this? My father must be crying devil to anyone who'll hear him and at this point I can't very well disagree." But she was going to anyway, out of principle.

Desi couldn't help bringing a hand to her chest in an exaggerated flattery as she was referred to as a positive note on an otherwise weird as all hell week. "Awww!" She grinned. "Back at you!"

The pasta and the wine were pretty amazing. Desi nodded effusively. "So good. So, so good."

Oh good! Desi wouldn't mind if she came over sometime and if that ever happened, then Crystal was sure she'd enjoy herself. Even if there definitely wouldn't be as many animals as she had. The only places that usually did were vet clinics, shelters... and zoos. "Here's one to think about." why would anyone cry devil? Crystal wasn't going to because she didn't know how anyone had actually been hurt by it. Just forced to live in a world that they probably liked a whole lot better. "We all thought Reggie was married and forgot he'd ever been married to that miserable excuse of a bitch he dated in high school. That was nothing but good." Except for that bit where what the hell was happening with those two now? Crystal was going to have to touch base and make sure nothing bad had happened.

Now she was going to worry about Sarah and Bess. But at least she could push it to the back of her mind because Desi was smiling and she had a nice smile.

"It's one of my specialities. Also I just cook better when other people are eating it." Crystal twirled a forkful of pasta. "Don't know why, but when I'm just cooking for me it's never as good." After eating in relative silence for a moment, Crystal brought her eyes back up from her plate. "So, Desi. What do you do for fun? Other than magic."
