Don't lose your temper
WHO: Julian & Lux
WHERE: Police Station
WHEN: Early afternoon
The donuts were a bribe. Julian knew it, his captain knew it, the entire law enforcement/emergency responder/fire fighter team assembled at the high school knew it. He was still paying for that one dad he had laid out. If someone had bothered to pay attention, it would be clear that it hadn't been his fault and that it had been in self-defense. Of course, no one else saw it that way. There had been two options presented to him: take the day off (uh, no way) or head over to the police station and push papers because they were short-staffed with everyone else being at the school. The fire chief had then given him a box of donuts to take to the station, like he was some sort of flipping messenger. It was insulting. He was a veteran and despite being too young to be generally considered grizzled, he wasn't exactly the fresh prince. He wondered how many strings his captain had to pull to even get him assigned to a desk job with the cops. He'd only been to the police station a handful of times and they didn't exactly bring back good memories. He'd never been thrown in jail or anything, but the last time he'd associated with someone who called themselves the 'police,' a good handful of the men in his squad had died. And the time before that, it was to give a statement about the accident. That stopped Julian's thought process cold. No thinking about that. It was not allowed.
Instead, he busied himself with stuffing a whole donut into his face as he shouldered the police station doors open. Walking straight over to the first person he saw, he opened the box and tried to speak through a full mouth. "Donut? Courtesy of the families supporting our men over at the high school, which is where I should be considering my value as a physical asset, but instead here I am handing out donuts to the rest of the boys - and girls - in blue. Happy Thursday; our fire chief has no common sense; please point me to the desk covered in paperwork related to the school I'm supposed to be reading," Julian said in one breath, not even bothering to hide his disdain at his current job assignment.
