The mixer was very well chaperoned, hosted at the hotel by Ms. Sheedy. There was a piano player for music, a buffet against one wall. There were tables for eating and talking, and a space set aside for dancing. Under Ms. Sheedy's beady eye.

Some of the Beloveds at the hotel had arrived early to help set up the room so even by the time it officially 'opened' at 6 pm there was a bit of a crowd of unmarried people.

"Perhaps," she said. "But I am not sure completely sure he returns that. I suspect he is just very friendly."

"May I enquire as to whom? Or is that too impolite?"

She offered him a small smile. "A Mr. O'Sullivan, but I have not seen him in a while." She shrugged slowly. "I am enjoying LeChance even without a match," she said honestly. "It really is just a wonderful place."

She grinned. "My novels are certainly benefiting from the inspiration."

"I have, yes," she answered, grinning. "But it's really not that easy to keep getting published."

James blushed furiously, but was secretly pleased. He was getting better at dealing with compliments, but it still felt unusual from time to time. "Thank you for saying so, you're very kind," he said softly. "Most of what I've been playing this evening has been other people's work though."

"I'm not entirely sure," Amy admitted. "I could lend you a copy if you are really interested but, please, don't read it for politeness' sake."
