The mixer was very well chaperoned, hosted at the hotel by Ms. Sheedy. There was a piano player for music, a buffet against one wall. There were tables for eating and talking, and a space set aside for dancing. Under Ms. Sheedy's beady eye.

Some of the Beloveds at the hotel had arrived early to help set up the room so even by the time it officially 'opened' at 6 pm there was a bit of a crowd of unmarried people.

"Well, I assure you that I've come up with things that I certainly wouldn't want to eat. Or smell, to be perfectly honest. But in order to see whether they're effective, we'd need a ...living, if it can be called that, specimen."

"Ah yes. Well, I'm sure the mayor would be glad to bait another trap with whatever you've created."

Simon nodded. "I suppose I should ask for exactly that."

"I've been trying to develop some sort of shield for the mine," he said. "But I'm afraid I've not come up with anything that I think will work well enough."

"What seems to be the trouble in finding something?" He seemed sincerely interested.

"Metal that is thick enough to block the heat is too heavy," he said. "If I make it thin enough to carry, then it heats too rapidly."

"How far does it need carrying?" he wondered. "Could you use a mule and cart?"

"To the fissure, and a mule and cart would do until we got there. Then we'd have to carry it in by hand and have to figure a way to either use ... whatever method they come up with through it or around it or..." He sighed and shook his head.

"Sounds like you need a whole team working on it with you. And," he added on a sigh, "that's far beyond any invention I might come up with. Have you talked to anyone else?"

"Not yet," he admitted. "I was hoping to get further along before I approached anyone. If there was something we could coat the thinner metal with or some other material that was strong enough to withstand the heat, we could make some progress."
