The mixer was very well chaperoned, hosted at the hotel by Ms. Sheedy. There was a piano player for music, a buffet against one wall. There were tables for eating and talking, and a space set aside for dancing. Under Ms. Sheedy's beady eye.

Some of the Beloveds at the hotel had arrived early to help set up the room so even by the time it officially 'opened' at 6 pm there was a bit of a crowd of unmarried people.

She made a little curtsy to his bow. "Well, I live here so it's a bit easier to attend things," she said with a smile. "I hope the evening finds you well?"

"You live here," he agreed, "but I imagine there's ways around attending a function if you're wanting to be somewhere else." He had to pause to make sure that made sense.

Satisfied, his smile warmed. "Right as rain on a spring morning, yes'm. What about you? Everything going all right?"

"I could hide in my room, I suppose," she said with a laugh. "But that wouldn't be much fun. And yes, things are going well enough."

"Don't know that it sounds like much fun to me, but you could," he agreed again. And went on smiling. "Your business is doing all right? Not too troubled by the happenings?"

"Not after the initial burst no, thank goodness," she said. She turned to look as someone got off the sofa nearest them, and then returned her attention to Dan. "Would you care to sit?"

He glanced at the sofa as well, then back down at her and nodded. "Wouldn't mind that at all." He gestured her ahead of him and followed, still with the ever-present mechanical sound. When she'd sat, he did the same.

"Nice to have something like this going on. Seems like folk all got busy all at once."

She arranged her skirts to cover her startled motion at the sound; somehow she'd forgotten about it. Not that he had it, just the noise it made.

"I think a great number of people are helping the mayor with trying to figure out what's going on," she said.

Dan nodded. "Seems like it might take all of us to figure it out, too." He, at the least, was baffled by what had been turned up. "Did you know they caught a couple of them? The spiders, or whatever they're supposed to be."

"I heard they had captured at least one, yes," she said. "I haven't been over to look at it yet. I'm not sure I want to know what it looks like."

He hadn't considered that it might bother her. "I won't trouble you by describing it then," he said apologetically. "But I will say that if you've got any curiosity about how things are put together, they're interesting to study a while." He'd been fascinated, but that was beside the point.

"I keep meaning to cross the street and say hello," he offered instead. "Think I probably can, now that the store's set to my liking."

"I've been debating," she said. "On one hand, seeing it would probably quell the imaginings I've had. On the other... Well, I suppose I'm just being silly."

She paused to smile at someone that passed by them.

"I'm glad to hear that you've gotten the store settled," she said. "I'm afraid I've been a terrible neighbor by not coming to see you."

"No such a thing," he promised. "You've got your business to tend and that comes before a visit. Besides, I'm just as terrible for not taking the time to call my own self." But now that it'd been brought up. "I did wonder whether I might be able to talk you into another walk up to that point."

She looked down momentarily to hide a pleased smile. "I'd quite like that," she said with a nod. "It's a beautiful spot."

That was a relief. "Yes, it is," he agreed. "Not near as nice alone, though. That first visit must have just set the way things ought to be in my mind."

She smiled again, flushed very faintly. "I hope it wasn't a bad impression then."

She blinked at him, then covered her mouth as she laughed. "Oh dear, I'm sorry," she apologized. "But for an instant, that rather made me sound like a ... a plate of roast beef!" she exclaimed, laughing again.

Oops. His eyes widened a little. "I didn't mean it that way. I wouldn't compare you to...well." He stopped and amended. "Better a plate of roast beef than a bowl of squash? I ai--I'm not much for squash. Do like my roast beef, though."

He smiled and hoped she didn't think he was a complete idiot.

She didn't, in fact, she was highly amused. She held up her hand while she got control of herself. "I know you didn't," she said apologetically. "But you have to admit, it was rather funny."

He grinned, relieved that she was amused. Though he could handle being laughed at, too, if he had to. "Guess that's what happens when farm boys try to get fancy."
