Day One - In the Beginning
Who: Jareth and everyone!
When: Day One, early morning
What: The King addresses his court
Where: City of Illusions, town center
Rating: Anywhere from G to R, I suppose
Status: Complete

In the beginning, everything was nothing. There was a void, black and endless. In one split second, that changed. Where there had been nothing but blackness, the vaguest shape of something began to take form. At first, it was impossible to tell what, since there was still very dark. Slowly, an area of the void began to lighten, and something could be seen to move through the dim light. Before there was more than light and dark, he was there shaping the world.

The King of the Goblins and former Ruler of the Underground looked around at what he had done, little though it appeared to be. He laughed, and it was the first sound ever heard in that place. The light continued to build, and he liked that and encouraged it. For many seconds, almost a full minute, he was very busy. He could feel others coming from the strange Planet that he had escaped. He must be ready... buildings sprung into existance, and grass, and a forest around the edge of the town. He was very guided by the place he'd been before, but also by the first Underground that had been destroyed.

Things were still shiny and new, almost not quite formed, when the first of them arrived. He supposed he'd dragged them along with him when he'd done battle with the Planet, but he wasn't worried. They wouldn't know what was going on. In the blink of an eye, they were there. Cathal, Gabrielle, Faith Lehane, Mercy Thompson, Giselle, Severus Snape, they all popped into being. The surge of energy this brought was incredible, and the lines of the city he had created, which had been hazy and indistinct, firmed into a more solid state.

Jareth searched, then, through all of the worlds that he could reach into with all his millenia of practice. Before a full ten seconds had passed since the arrival of the first ones, those from Mirage, more were brought to stand beside them. Cimorene, Helena Campbell, Hermione Granger, Jack Harkness, Jack Sparrow, Robin of Locksley, Rose Tyler, Schuldig, Steerpike, The Doctor, Willow Rosenberg and Yaten Kou. There was no rhyme or reason to his selections. He simply grabbed those who interested him and took them.

Before long at all, in fact, before even five minutes had passed since he had first walked the void, he had a decent sized group. He would bring more, but later. For now, he had a doubtless very confused court to attend to, and it wouldn't do to keep them waiting. With a gesture, he stood in the very center of the group so they tended to form a circle around him. With a slight twist of his mind, he made himself appear to sparkle, to seem taller than he was, to get their attention.

"Welcome to the Underground." His voice rang out clear and strong through the clearing in the center of the town. "I am the King of this place, and I've brought you here. Some of you will be familiar with this process, as it has been done once before. For some, this is the first time. You will be glad to know it will also be the last." Through some trick of his illusions, he appeared to be looking at each and every one of them, though of course, that should not be possible as they were all arrayed in a circle around him.

"This is your home now. You will not be leaving." He snapped, and in front of each person hung floating in the air two things, a key with a number clearly inscribed on it, and a book. "This is what I shall give you. A journal, which I shall leave to you to figure out, and a key, which is to the room you have been assigned." As he spoke, an orange/red sort of light began to fill the sky to the east. Soon, the sun broke from the horizon and began to rise, casting light on what had largely been in shadow before.

The buildings, each and every one of them, were hung about in gauzy fabrics of all colors. Tents and pavilions were in abundance throughout the area, and from somewhere not so far off, a horse could be heard to snort to itself. It was the City of Illusions in it's Ren Faire guise, which Jareth had seen while on Earth and which had struck his fancy. "This is your home." He repeated. "I have made this city for you to live in. There are only a few simple rules. You may not attempt to kill each other. You may not leave. You may not attempt to go into another's room uninvited. It's quite simple, really."

Jareth didn't pause, didn't give anyone a chance to speak, or even really think through what he had been saying. "For those of you that would not be satisfied with simply existing here in this city, there is a choice. Brave my labyrinth." He gestured toward a wall, high and thick and imposing. A large gate, easily wide enough to drive two buses through, hung open. "If you solve the labyrinth and get to my castle at the center of the structure, you will be rewarded." He paused for just a moment. "Perhaps even with your freedom." He didn't specify further than that.

"That is all. If you have any questions, any of my servants will assist you." He snapped once more, and a short, funny looking goblin scuried up. "Of course, you are welcome to ask me in person... but only if you solve my labyrinth first." As the last words came from his mouth, he was already fading from sight. Seconds later, he was completely gone, leaving those he had brought in a strange sunrise in a completely new world. The goblin, however, remained, looking at the group impassively.

In all honesty, though she'd been taken to Mirage against her will, it hadn't been the worst thing that had ever happened to her. It shamed her a little, but she was rather glad she'd been taken when she had been. She hadn't really had to face the consequences of her own actions in bringing her best friend and soul mate back from the dead.

Of course, it would have been different if Xena hadn't already been on Mirage. She would have done everything she could, moved heaven and earth, to get back to the dark-haired warrior woman. But that hadn't been necessary. Though she knew that Xena would eventually, or not so eventually, chafe under the restriction of not really being able to fight and/or kill things, she had been rather relieved. She didn't have to make that choice, it had been made for her.

She was already planning her day as she awoke. She would look around Mirage a bit. After all, she hadn't really been around that long. There was lots to see. But it would seem that something else had another idea. As she kissed Xena's shoulder and made to roll out of bed, she found herself falling. It hadn't been so long ago that she'd been through this, and she wondered if she was going back home. Desperately, she groped for Xena, but didn't manage to catch hold before she was pulled in.

She landed in the middle of possibly the oddest scene she'd ever been a part of, and that was certainly saying something. She frowned to herself, running her fingers through short blonde locks in confusion. That confusion turned to anger as the one who called himself King spoke. She was pretty sure she didn't like his style. Too arrogant, too sure of herself, and she'd dealt with far too many of that type. With a soft frown, she turned to the person standing beside her. "Do you know anything about this?" Almost absently, she reached out and took the book and key, then simply stood there looking down at them.

One minute, he'd been riding on his way to Nottingham Castle to rescue some captives from the Sheriff of Nottingham's gallows and the next thing he knew he was not only not on his horse, but was standing in a half circle with many other people listening to a very oddly dressed man addressing them as if they were his subjects. He also referred to himself as King. Robin was quite certain that Richard was the King, although he wasn't sure if his reign covered this so-called Underworld.

Robin was confused and he wondered if perhaps he'd fallen off his horse during his ride and had hit his head. Perhaps this was nothing more than a dream. Although it did seem real enough to him, and if it was a dream, he couldn't understand where he had come up with some of these people. The young woman beside him, for instance, was far to underdressed to be from his own time, and the weapons on her person told him she was a warrior. Women, while some might be trained in swordsmanship, were usually not trained with the strange weapons she had in her boots. He cast his gaze around as a key and book loomed before him. He took them from the air in which they hung and continued to glance around.

A man with greasy black hair that reminded him all too much of the Sheriff of Nottingham stood beside a ... Robin had to blink and then transfer the key to his other hand so he could rub his eyes and glance again. But his eyesight was not deceiving him, the woman was indeed naked. He averted his gaze and saw that another dark haired woman with many tattoos on her skin was rushing to see if the naked woman was alright. And another man of a descent he was unfamiliar with stood by, staring at people the way Robin was now.

The woman beside him spoke, and he turned to look down at her. "Be sure I know nothing of this, my lady. I have no understanding of how I've come to be here." He chanced his glance around again. Such a strange group of people, and none of them seemed to be from his time. The Gobling King faded from view and Robin was left utterly confused.

The blonde bard looked at the man thoughtfully for a moment. Rather attractive, she had to admit. And certainly less scary than the one who had called himself King, and who had made all sorts of frightening pronouncements. She smiled as brightly at him as she could manage, given the somewhat disturbing circumstances.

"Hi." She didn't quite bat her eyelashes at him. Okay, she could be a tiny bit of a flirt sometimes. But she didn't really mean it most of the time. It was just her way of relating to attractive people. And it always somehow came off looking much more innocent than it would under most circumstances for most people. She smiled at him and then tucked the key in a belt pouch. The book she held in one hand, basically ignoring it for now. There would be time to read later.

She glanced away from the man beside her for a moment to look at the others who were around. A dark-haired man who looked rather unpleasant, she rather thought she was going to make a distinct effort to stay away from him. A naked woman... she glanced away and then did a double take. Yes, most definitely naked. She blinked and then her gaze moved on. A dark haired woman covered with tattoos that ran over to the naked woman. She was naked as well. She didn't claim to understand, just kept looking. All sorts of different people, but not the one she really wanted to see.

She sighed softly, wondering if she'd been separated from Xena once more. If so, she had to find a way to get back to her. But first, time to check out the situation, to see if this man beside her was a friend or someone she was going to have to fight. She gave him another bright smile. "I'm Gabrielle." She looked at him thoughtfully. "I'm glad that you aren't a part of this abduction."

She frowned thoughtfully down at the book, not really seeing it. "Where do you think we are? Do you think that person was telling the truth?" She glanced over at the spot where the King had disappeared.

Gabrielle was pleasing to the eye, but his heart still clung to Marian. He gave her a return smile, though his was more hesitant. "Greetings." He reached back with his free hand and was glad to find that the quiver of arrows and his bow were still slung in the appropriate place. At least he wasn't without protection. As Gabrielle took the time to glance around, Robin did the same one more time. It seemed that there were suddenly people there that hadn't been there before, but their number hadn't increased. Perhaps his glance had just gone past them the first time.

He saw a woman with strawberry red hair, dressed in something akin to what he would expect a Queen or noble from his time to wear. She was pretty, but looked a little perturbed. He couldn't help a fleeting smile as his gaze moved on to take in a dark haired girl in more strange clothing and a rather sour looking young man. These people were strange, and he was glad that the one he was speaking to now seemed, if not more ancient than himself, at least from around the same time period.

He couldn't judge where the man in the overcoat was from, but he looked forlorn. Robin supposed he probably had a similar look, especially if he thought too hard about what would happen to the poor people who'd be hung without him there to set them free. And Marian, of course, was always in his thoughts. He couldn't seem to shake her from his mind, not since she'd come to see him in the forest. It seemed like ages now, but it had only been a few days.

When Gabrielle spoke again, Robin glanced down. She was quite short, but then again, he was used to short women. "I'm Robin." He returned his name after she gave hers, though he really ought to have been the gentleman and offered his first. He held out his hand, requesting hers to kiss, as he did all women he met. "I am not certain of our location, but I have never seen it before. It is quite foreign to me." He followed her gaze to the place Jareth had vacated and where now stood his goblin. He'd never seen a creature like it before, and if he wasn't dreaming, he was certainly nowhere like home.

"Yes, I think he was telling the truth." He lifted a shoulder in a half shrug and turned back to her. "I cannot conceive of this place being a lie." He gestured all around them. It seemed real to him, even if it was surreal at the same time.

She was cautious as she watched him reach for his bow, though he wasn't acting like he was going to attack. But it did bring her mind to something else, something that she was very annoyed with herself for not noticing earlier. She had rolled right out of bed... as she watched Robin check for his weapons, she realized that she had none. They had been close by, of course, but she hadn't grabbed her razor-sharp sai's before she'd been sucked in. She didn't so much as have a quarter staff. So if Robin were to attack her, she couldn't even defend herself.

Luckily, he didn't seem the type. Her first impulse about him had been right. She smiled at him, relaxing a bit, though she really would have to make some sort of effort to arm herself. She couldn't be sure of anything right now. She couldn't even be sure of where she was. Something called the Underground? And there was a labyrinth... yes, she saw it over there, with tall, imposing stone walls.

She scanned the group of people again, looking for a certain tall, well-muscled warrior woman, but found nothing. A soft sigh escaped her lips. But her attention was brought back to the handsome man beside her as he held out his hand. With a smile, she placed hers in his, wondering what he would do now. If she was reading his body language right, he was going to kiss it. That thought made a very feminine part of herself swoon with delight, even if she wasn't truly interested in him in any sort of romantic way. Any girl out there... okay, except maybe Xena, would like to have their hand kissed.

"I think so, too." She agreed, once more glancing around. "And I don't think this is Mirage, either. It's different here. The air or something..." She shook her head, trying to puzzle it out. Of course, she hoped it was Mirage, because if it was, she would be able to find her best friend. But it really didn't feel quite right. "So we're supposed to find our rooms and... then what? We play this game and go through the labyrinth?" She frowned a little. "I wonder if there's a minotaur in there?"

He watched the fleeting look of annoyance pass over Gabrielle's face as he reached for his bow and arrows. He wondered if she were annoyed with him, but as her gaze seemed turned inward he thought she was probably annoyed with herself for some reason. Something that had to do with his weapons. And he saw that she had none, although she did look like a warrior. He smiled lightly when he realized she was probably upset that her own weapons hadn't come with her to this strange land.

He took her hand when it was placed in his and he bent low over it, pressing his lips to her knucles before releasing it after a gentle squeeze. He noted her pleasure at the simple act and he had to wonder if she didn't meet many men who greeted her properly. "I don't think this is a mirage, either." He'd misunderstood her meaning, having missed the capital M applied to the word indicating that it was a name of a place and not an illusion that came from a weary mind. He knew what she meant about it being different here. The air was not the same as the great outdoors in England. It seemed almost full of toxicants or thickness, something that might smother him if he took too large a breath.

Robin was at as big of a loss as she as to what to do. This was his first time being taken from his own time and place. He was still trying to get used to the idea of this as a dream, although he had to still wonder where such strange people had come from. Normally when he dreamed, he knew the people and the places. This was not a normal dream, if it was in fact, a dream. "I suppose that would be one way to go about it. Do you think if we finish this game of his, we will be able to go home?"

He had things to do and people to save. He couldn't be standing about, perplexed, when men and women he was responsible for had their necks noosed in the gallows. And what about Marian? He knew that bastard of a Sheriff had her. The thought of the Sheriff had him glancing at Snape again. Damn it if the man didn't look just like him, only clean shaven with longer straighter hair and black robes instead of armour. He glanced away, shaking his head and glanced down at his key and book. "Finding our rooms is probably the place to start. At least then we know where to rest if we need it." His brow furrowed and though he had turned away to head for the dorms, he turned back. "Did you say Minotaur?"

He was certain that those were only myth, but she had seemed quite serious in her query. Odd. Very odd indeed.

Gabrielle may have been a warrior, but she was also very much a girl. Having someone kiss her hand was something that just plain didn't happen enough. In her home village, they hadn't treated people as nicely as that. There was also the simple fact that most of the men she ran into, she seemed to be fighting. There was hardly time for pleasantries like hand kissing in those circumstances.

So it was far from unpleasant for her as he did so, and she favored him with a bright smile. He really was quite handsome, though she sensed he was just being polite. Still, that didn't mean she couldn't enjoy it. When he'd finished, she let her hand fall back to her side. "No... not mirage like an illusion. Mirage was a place. It took me and my best friend before..." Her voice trailed off, and she glanced around once more. She saw many people, but no one that could possibly be Xena. It would be very difficult to mistake the warrior woman for anyone else.

"This isn't the first time for me." She sort of naturally lapsed into a storytelling mode. "My best friend and I were taken from our own home to a place called Mirage. But I was only there a short time, now I'm here." She sighed softly. "Apparently. And not only that, but without any weapons. It's not good."

She frowned thoughtfully as he asked his question. "He did sort of imply it, but never actually said it. I wouldn't count on it." She shrugged slightly. "But, on the other hand, what could it hurt? A labyrinth will be a challenge, but if there's even a chance of getting home, it will be worth it." It wasn't like she hadn't faced challenges before, and from the look of the man, he had as well.

"Oh, yes! Finding our rooms." She nodded in agreement. "I think I'll go do that..." Or possibly check out the labyrinth, she hadn't decided yet. She was still rather unfocused. "Yes, the Minotaur. He's not very nice. I hope he's not in there." She pointed toward the high stone walls of the labyrinth.

Robin's brow furrowed as Gabrielle spoke of a place being called Mirage. He'd never heard of such a thing. Who named places after illusions? Oh well, she seemed certain that was not where they were. And when she spoke of her best friend, he saw her glance around. Robin thought she must be looking for her and he felt sorry that she'd been ripped from someone's company only to be thrust here. The same had happened to him, of course, but he didn't think about that now.

He nodded in response to her story about this other land called Mirage. "It must be very strange for you to be taken from your world and again from another." He noted her lack of weapons and touched the sword in its scabbard at his hip. He had all of his and was grateful that he'd been allowed to keep them when he'd been snatched. "Perhaps we could find a blacksmith to make you some new ones?" He glanced around, curious for the first time about all the buildings and what they could possibly hold. This was going to be an adventure, he was sure of it.

He nodded again. "I think I shall try it at some point, but I'm rather tired at the moment and think that I should find my room. Would you like help finding yours?" He didn't want to be presumptuous and imply that she had no skill for finding things on her own, but he didn't want to abandon her if there was a chance she did need help. He frowned as she elaborated on the Minotaur and just shrugged, hoping that when he decided to brave it he would meet no such creature. He did want to attempt it soon, however, he needed to get back to Marian and the rest.

"You said it. Strange doesn't begin to cover it." She glanced at his hand as he touched his sword, vaguely envious that he had his weapon while she didn't. But at least she was fairly sure now that he wouldn't try to attack her. Some men had obvious honor, and she'd learned to tell that type. Of course, she was wrong sometimes, but trusted it wasn't so with Robin.

"I hope so..." She flashed him a smile and shrugged. "Or, if nothing else, I should be able to find a fallen tree limb or something to make a staff out of." She didn't fight with a staff anymore, much prefering the sais, but any port in a storm. At least she could defend herself. But she would deal with that later. Not too much later, of course. Arming herself was important, especially as a stranger in a strange land.

"I suppose I probably will too, even if there are monsters." It wasn't like she hadn't fought before. But weapons would need to be found first. And she wouldn't mind orienting herself first. "Hmm? Oh, no. No thank you." She smiled brightly at him. "I can find it myself, but thank you for offering! Maybe I'll see you around?"

With another genuine smile, she nodded to him and headed off. She could tell that he wanted to get started on exploring, and she wanted to do the same. Maybe she'd get lucky and Xena would be around somewhere. She didn't actually think it would happen, but hope would always spring eternal with her.
