text ( open to all )
[ The handwriting is slanted, practiced, fluid and feminine. She does not write much, but she has been taught well. ]

My name is Lady Morgana, ward of King Uther Pendragon of Camelot.

I'm afraid I don't quite understand how I came to be here. The maids who were sent to welcome me were very entertaining, but they seemed unwilling or perhaps unable to answer many of my questions. I fear that something dreadful may have happened - the last thing I remember is going to bed in the palace as normal. Was I taken ill?

The maids could not tell me where Guinevere might be, my own maid; or even Prince Arthur or the King himself. If I am truly able to speak to another by writing in this book, then I hope somebody will answer.

[ Something is written and scratched out, then written again. ]

Is this magic?

[Laughs, somewhat awkwardly, and about to try to fumble through an explanation that he's not king here, can hardly demand a special accommodations when there is none to give, but--]

[Well, the sudden change in expression makes him frown]

What is it?

I spoke with Merlin.

[ Just that, for the moment, though the way she looks up at him - and finally sees just how much older he looks than she knows him to be - says there's more to it. ]

[And he's not delusional enough to not imagine how that conversation went]

Oh. [...] ... Yes. He's-- [did he hurt you, he wants to ask, but then it's clear that he hasn't gone that far and he won't, damn it.]

As I said, there's... a lot to explain.

That you knew he had magic.

[ The words are blunt, to the point. Merlin's words and the revelation they have presented have cut her to the quick and she's still smarting from it, hurt that for all she has risked for them - for all she thought they were friends, even Arthur would not trust her with this.

Of course, she can't know how much more there is to it. ]

Not-- [shakes his head] Only until recently. It was... he told me the truth just before I arrived here. But until then, he'd kept it from me.

[ There's a barb waiting to be shot back, but while she opens her mouth to say the words, they don't make it out. She thinks better of it and simply nods her understanding. ]

I'm surprised to see you take it so well.

[ The words aren't as harsh as they could have been, or meant to be cruel. She knows Arthur as Crown Prince of Camelot - as Uther's right hand, obedient to him and his tyranny. But she also knows Arthur as the boy she grew up with. Who she has known to be sympathetic even if it often takes her jabs to rouse him to action; who she has thought will make a better king. ]

[Looks down for a moment, almost guilty - if only because, well. He didn't take it well. And he can't help but think, ultimately, of how he found out about Morgana's magic in the first place. Sob.]

[...]

I've had... a lot of time to think on it.

[ What can she say to that? Just nods. She's not going to understand, at least not yet. How long he must have had, how much he must have experienced. ]

Your father would have seen him executed.

[ He nearly did with her own maid, caring little for how close they've been. ]

Father would have done many things to have the Camelot he truly wanted. [mrrr. knows this from experience with a ghost, welp.] It's fortunate for Merlin that while he's a fool in all over things, this, at least, was a secret he could keep.

Fortunate indeed.

[ She smiles - Merlin is her friend, still, in her mind. She would no more want to see him dead than Gaius or Gwen. Arthur knows well enough that she has never entertained the idea that all magic is evil. ]

You've aged better than I expected.

[ She's teasing, but it's as good a way as any to point out how much older he looks than she's used to. If he's not going to take the floor and fully explain what's going on yet on his own steam, she'll just keep at it until she's satisfied.

If that ever happens. ]

[That, at least, is what gets him to snort a little and smile for the first time without feeling like he's about to curl up and die as a result, so. That's great.]

You make it sound like you expected me to look like a toad. [And he can't help but tease back, finding it oddly easy to do so,] I'm sure I'm still just as handsome as you remember. [~*~]

[In seriousness, though, he's sighing out after a moment and gesturing for her to walk with him so he actually can get her a room without getting utterly distracted]

It's been about ten years between us, I think. [If he can guess, given how you're acting, but--] What's the last thing you remember, before arriving here?

[ You're welcome.

She shrugs a shoulder at his toad comment - you said it, not me - and easily falls into step alongside him. ]

The... the Questing Beast.

[ More serious now, she nods to herself. Thinking back through last night's nightmare, just like all the others. It always feels as though the previous day is a world away... and she supposes this time it is. ]

I told you not to go, but you didn't listen... you were nearly killed.

[ Looking up again. ]

But I suppose you remember.

Yes. I remember. [Funny to think how back then, you wanted him to live and be safe. But then, ten years certainly does a lot to two people, sigh.]

At least you can be assured that I've lasted this long, in the end. [:D;;?] [... k... inda. but let's not go into that.]

[ All she can do is smile at that. Because it is a relief to know that in ten years he hasn't gotten himself killed yet. ]

I only hope I can say the same.

[ ... You did sort of walk into that one. ]

[Aha, shit, he totally did walk into that one............... f...uck.]

[...]

You've certainly found means to keep yourself busy over the years, yes. [That's. neutral, right?] [And now they're approaching the hotel, so he's gesturing to it] This is where everyone stays.

[ She would have said more, asked more, had they not at this moment approached the hotel. It's lucky it cuts her off. She considers it for a moment; more humble than the palace, but that's hardly difficult. It isn't as if she's so prudish to turn her nose up at it. ]

It'll certainly be an experience.

[ Well, she's never stayed in a hotel before. She immediately thinks of - Gwen. She would have told her about it... Eyes cast down, Morgana sighs quietly. ]

The people I spoke with explained that she must not even know I'm gone, but... I can't shake the feeling that Gwen's still waiting for me.

Don't worry about the price. [He has a job here, after all, something he's sure she'll find hilarious once she's settled and he can actually tell her about it]

And although I haven't experienced it myself -- [and never will] -- those who have returned to their lands only to be brought back here again can confirm that time back home really has been stopped.

I understand not being able to shake that feeling, though. [... except now he's thinking of Guinevere, too, and... sob.] I promise, when you return, Guinevere will be there with you.

Even when I thought she was going to be executed, even then I still...

[ She bites her lips, fighting back tears that prove too much for her. It's not just this, though this may be the catalyst - it's everything, all of the sudden change she wasn't ready for, it's overwhelming. ]

... I still had the chance to say goodbye...

[ Her voice cracks on the last word and her shoulders are already shaking with the effort not to cry. She is stronger than this, she has to be stronger than this... ]

[Makes a soft sound at that, one of sympathy and regret, really -- but more just distressed that she's upset]

[Steps to her, pulling her into another hug, tentative at first]

I know. [........................] That's the worst part.

[ He may be tentative about it, but she pays no mind, hands resting on his chest as she ducks her head and allows it to happen. Soft, quiet tears, and she says no more for a long moment - until a rueful, humourless little laugh escapes her. ]

How funny you must find me, distraught over a servant...

No, of course not. [Maybe once upon a time he'd have laughed at her, but not when it's her] She-- she isn't just a servant. [To you or to him] It's Guinevere.

She was the only one who'd be honest with me. Everyone else was always too frightened of Uther.

[ Finally she steps back, blinking and trying to dab at her eyes with a sleeve in the least undignified way possible. ]

Even you were too scared half the time.

[ The words have been said more harshly by her before - she's mostly trying to make light of the situation now, trying to manage a smile. ]

[He manages a small smile, in turn - part of him feels the sting of the words, even if in this case she doesn't mean it harshly, only because he knows it's the truth as much as he'd like to protest... but his father has always been something he's had issues with, especially now]

[But he shakes his head and looks away politely for a moment so she can wipe at her eyes, not wanting her to feel he's making fun of her for it, but his smile is soft as he continues to think of Gwen]

Yes... Guinevere has always given unbiased opinions. She's one of the bravest women to ever walk the earth, I think.

And here I thought you hardly noticed the servants.

[ A small laugh before she looks up, away and around, at the place itself more than anything. ]

Perhaps I can make something of myself in this place. Be more than a decoration at the king's left hand, to be handed to his son should no more advantageous match come along.

[ A beat. ]

... No offence meant, of course.
