On the housing situation
The potluck had ended late evening, people starting to get hungry again, and everyone receiving the reassurance that the queen and Link would be around for further questions the next day- even right there where Uma sits, promise promise. So dishes were gathered up, tables and chairs were put away, and the wash basin was emptied and rinsed out, and then everyone departed to go settle into their own homes for the night, though Kass lingered a bit longer, just long enough to say goodnight and goodbye to the queen and his friend before retiring to the inn.

Link and Zelda both had agreed that the day had been mentally tiring enough that they wanted food in them before they did much of anything else, so after Link had changed out of his uniform and back into a proper tunic and pants, he cooked them a quiet dinner of a meat curry- nothing fancy, nothing with any special properties, just meat and rice and some Goron spice. There wasn't any conversation over dinner, nothing in particular, anyway, and dishes were washed just as quietly, except the occasional question about where things belonged again, once they were dried.

Honestly, nothing was really said after they'd sat back down either, not at first, anyway. Link was going over some decisions in his head, what all needed to be brought up and when. He decided that Zumi could wait until tomorrow evening- she wasn't likely to be in town tomorrow yet, not with how slow they'd have to travel with her condition, and the day was tiring enough, Link didn't want it to end in what was likely to be an exhausting fight. And even if it didn't end in a fight, Zelda was going to be going to bed upset, for one reason or another, and that wasn't the way to end the day, nor was it the way to start the next.

He'd just have to gamble that Zumi and Yammo weren't making better time than he thought.

Well, that thought pushed aside for the moment, at least.

But, the housing thing did need to be talked about, and that one, at least, would hopefully not end up with any sort of argument or hurt feelings. Neither one of them needed that to end their days.

Besides, night was approaching. And it was worse at night. Link didn't want to end up too mentally restless to sleep and go out all night again. He could find things to do, and there was food he could cook that would keep him going without the need for sleep, but even though that stuff kept his body going, his mind could only run so long before it hit a wall.

That's what'd gotten him into trouble with Zumi in the first place. He didn't even want to think what stupidity he'd get into this time.

So he spent several minutes studying the upstairs part of the house, and the roof, trying to at least get an idea of what could be done to the place to make it suitable for two people needing separate bedrooms, assuming it could structurally be done. Might as well have an idea in mind to run past Bolson, before they might be forced to admit defeat and build Zelda her own house.

Well, might as well start the conversation. Symin should've let her know that it was going to happen that evening so at least he wouldn't be popping it out of the blue.

"Symin passed my message to you earlier, right?" he asked, breaking the silence.

Better be sure about that first.

"All right," Zelda said, nodding as she looked to where he indicated. She stepped away to put the day's clothing on the kitchen chair, freeing up her hands to lift one corner of the blanket.

"This would be especially not comfortable," she told him. "After being rinsed out and hung to dry, it's all stiff. That wouldn't be terribly pleasant to cuddle up to at night."

"Nothing a few good shakes wouldn't fix," he said dismissively, pulling a (also stolen) hammer and a nail- one at a time, please -from the Slate. He set the Slate on the bed, and grabbed one corner of the repurposed blanket. "Can you hold the length of this up? Otherwise it's just going to fall while I try to nail this corner in."

She did as he instructed, following directions until the task was complete.

He only hit his thumb once- and managed to stifle the worst of the language he wanted to spit out at it -which, given that he'd never actually nailed a thing in his life, he took as a good sign, especially since an experimental tug on the blanket at each spot where the nails were holding it up showed that as long as he didn't try to climb it, it would hold.

"There." He dropped the hammer back into the Slate and stepped out from behind the blanket, looking at his work. "You shouldn't have to worry about the lights waking me that way." He looked at her. "You know you'll never keep from waking me at all, right? Even when we have our own rooms, I notice sounds around me. I just tune them out once I've decided they're normal, not-monsters sounds and go back to sleep."

She frowned reluctantly. "Well, I-... all right. That doesn't mean you have to get up every time I wake up, though. That'll get old after a while. You need your sleep too, and don't make me make it a Royal Ordinance or something. I'll do it too, see if I won't. 'Hero Champion required to get X many hours of sleep per night on non-combative days'." She stuck her tongue out at him. "If you can follow me around like a lost puppy, I can make sure you don't wring yourself out doing it."

Link was about to protest that he'd only gotten up that morning because they had something going on first thing, then she pulled that 'lost puppy' thing out, and his jaw dropped incredulously. "'Lost puppy'? Excuse you? I was doing my job, not following you around because I was starved for affection. You didn't exactly give a lot of that at first anyway!"

He gave her an insulted look. "I didn't plan on getting up at the same time you do every day anyway. Today just had things going on." Grump grump grump.

"Do I do better at it now?" she asked, reaching out and patting his head like a puppy. Her eyes sparkled with impish humor which matched the grin that curled her lips. "Or do you prefer a skritch behind the ears?" she asked as she started to move her hand to do just that.

Brat.

He jerked his head back, exaggerating his scowl- he could play along just fine, thank you. "Keep yer mitts to yourself, woman," he grumbled at her. "Go to bed before I pick you up and drop you there."

Zelda laughed. "Good night, Link. Get some real sleep this time," she said before grabbing her clothing off the chair and heading up the staircase, pausing to put them in the trunk before climbing into the bed. The chandelier was still glowing, so she simply rolled over and faced the far wall, closing her eyes and winding down, letting Link have the lights on for as long as necessary to finish getting his bed area ready for the night.

Link was actually going to take a couple more minutes- he realized he was going to have to scavange one of the lights from the chandelier, or otherwise his little alcove was going to be very annoyingly dark.

Unfortunately, he was short- he was convinced he was the only short one in his family, as his sister was already bigger than him when she passed, and neither of his parents had been short, and while he couldn't remember what his grandmother looked like, he seemed to remember she had a towering presence, so whose shitty genetics he got, he wasn't sure, but he wasn't happy about it -which meant he was standing up on the table to get to the lights.

He glanced up at the loft once he'd worked a lantern free, listening for signs of her having fallen asleep.

Deciding that he was making too much noise yet for her to have fallen asleep, he decided to give her one more goodnight. "Hey, if you need something, wake me up," he said. "I can nap later if I need to."

He hopped down off the table and put the vase he'd taken off it back on its surface. "Anyway, goodnight."

There. Now he could sleep.
