On the housing situation
The potluck had ended late evening, people starting to get hungry again, and everyone receiving the reassurance that the queen and Link would be around for further questions the next day- even right there where Uma sits, promise promise. So dishes were gathered up, tables and chairs were put away, and the wash basin was emptied and rinsed out, and then everyone departed to go settle into their own homes for the night, though Kass lingered a bit longer, just long enough to say goodnight and goodbye to the queen and his friend before retiring to the inn.

Link and Zelda both had agreed that the day had been mentally tiring enough that they wanted food in them before they did much of anything else, so after Link had changed out of his uniform and back into a proper tunic and pants, he cooked them a quiet dinner of a meat curry- nothing fancy, nothing with any special properties, just meat and rice and some Goron spice. There wasn't any conversation over dinner, nothing in particular, anyway, and dishes were washed just as quietly, except the occasional question about where things belonged again, once they were dried.

Honestly, nothing was really said after they'd sat back down either, not at first, anyway. Link was going over some decisions in his head, what all needed to be brought up and when. He decided that Zumi could wait until tomorrow evening- she wasn't likely to be in town tomorrow yet, not with how slow they'd have to travel with her condition, and the day was tiring enough, Link didn't want it to end in what was likely to be an exhausting fight. And even if it didn't end in a fight, Zelda was going to be going to bed upset, for one reason or another, and that wasn't the way to end the day, nor was it the way to start the next.

He'd just have to gamble that Zumi and Yammo weren't making better time than he thought.

Well, that thought pushed aside for the moment, at least.

But, the housing thing did need to be talked about, and that one, at least, would hopefully not end up with any sort of argument or hurt feelings. Neither one of them needed that to end their days.

Besides, night was approaching. And it was worse at night. Link didn't want to end up too mentally restless to sleep and go out all night again. He could find things to do, and there was food he could cook that would keep him going without the need for sleep, but even though that stuff kept his body going, his mind could only run so long before it hit a wall.

That's what'd gotten him into trouble with Zumi in the first place. He didn't even want to think what stupidity he'd get into this time.

So he spent several minutes studying the upstairs part of the house, and the roof, trying to at least get an idea of what could be done to the place to make it suitable for two people needing separate bedrooms, assuming it could structurally be done. Might as well have an idea in mind to run past Bolson, before they might be forced to admit defeat and build Zelda her own house.

Well, might as well start the conversation. Symin should've let her know that it was going to happen that evening so at least he wouldn't be popping it out of the blue.

"Symin passed my message to you earlier, right?" he asked, breaking the silence.

Better be sure about that first.

"Hm?" Zelda looked down from the ceiling where she'd been following Link's gaze idly out of bored fatigue. "Oh. Yes, he did." She blinked at him, taking a sip of her drink. "Does that have anything to do with the new and amazing fascination with the ceiling? I like the chandelier, by the way."

Link snorted. "The 'chandelier' was Bolson's doing," he said. "He's got a... flair, I'll give him that." He glanced at the door, just outside of which was a damn sign with his name on it. (Really, Bolson? Sigh.)

He crossed his arms, looking back up at the second floor. "You know I'm not against renovating, right?" He looked back down at her. "If you want your own place, that's fine, but if you thought of that just because you thought I was against renovating, that's not necessary."

He silently begged her to not say she wanted her own place regardless. If she did, she did, but... it was worse at night. It was always worse at night. He avoided the worse by helping others, and alone in his own place, in a chapter of his life where he wouldn't be right back out the door the next morning to go back to saving the kingdom, wasn't a place where he could avoid that worse. There'd be no others to help in a way that would distract him.

"You're not?" She tilted her head to the side, thinking, then looked back up again. "That's why you were looking up, weren't you?" She looked to the ceiling. "There is room for a third floor, if the roof were modified from this" - she held her fingertips together in a sharp slope - "to this" - and bent the knuckles where the fingers met her palm outward, buckling them into roughly a forty degree angle - "or something approximate. That would certainly work for us. And you can get your bedroom back. I'll take the new one."

Link watched her fingers, mentally reconfiguring the roof/ceiling to match what she was illustrating, then looked back up at the ceiling to try apply that to what the place actually looked like at the moment. "That's an idea," he agreed. "I'm not sure how possible it'd be, we'd have to ask Bolson. But the roof outside needs to be fixed anyway, if it's possible, may as well do both at the same time."

Her ready statement of how the place could be modified relieved a knot in his stomach that had sat there ever since dinner, when he started having to think about the subject.

He glanced at her again. "So you saying you wanted your own place was because you thought I was against changing this place?" Just. Confirm. Yes. Confirm.

"Yes, and I felt bad even thinking about it, honestly. It's your house. You shouldn't have to do that to accommodate someone else, you should be able to have your own space. I didn't want you feeling like you had to kick me out for privacy," Zelda admitted.

Link gave her a tiredly guilty smile. "I don't care about privacy that much," he said. "Having walls up instead of an open plan like this is nice, but I don't feel any need to live alone. I only have so far because..." He waved his hand idly. "Who the hell would I live with? I was only here overnight, and not every night anyway, and the place was already bought and paid for, no need to have someone to share expenses. I have enough money that I didn't need help covering the power costs. And I'm not close enough to anyone who'd need a place to crash to need to offer the space."

"Oh. That makes sense." She looked up. "I'd like a wall between my bedroom and the rest of the place, definitely. And it's a bizarre thought, but I'd like windows inside the house, on that wall. The chandelier lets in so much light from the main part of the house, I don't want to cut that off entirely, but I do want privacy for changing and sleeping. That's not too insane an idea, is it?"

He stared at her blankly, then slowly shrugged. "I've lived in all of two houses, counting this one," he said, then raised his eyebrows. "That's not a good sample size for me to draw any sort of conclusions from. To put it how you scientists would."

"I can always just tell people it's a scientist thing and leave it at that. They'll nod and go with it and chalk it up as eccentric," Zelda mused. "I'll talk with Leop about building furnishing for the bedroom. Looking up, it's not going to be very big, but that's okay. Which means the furniture going in should work with the surroundings. A headboard that can go up against the wall that would face the inner part of the house, the feet of the bed facing the roof, wouldn't have to take into account the slope of the roof. It can be taller, and have built-in shelves for books and papers and such."

She frowned, looking over to the space beneath the stairs. "Do you need that area with the boxes where you were sleeping for anything?" she asked.

Link burst into laughter. "A hundred years wasn't enough to age you out of dumb name calling," he said, shaking his head. Then he flashed her a toothy smile. "I don't need to go out of my way, you know. I'm naturally a jackass. You can ask Dorephan for stories when we get there."

Why no, it wasn't occurring to him that she had no reason to realize he was old friends with the Zora royal family, and therefore no, wasn't aware that his statement might be confusing.

"Stories? The King of the Zora royal family has had you bouncing on his fin and has stories about what a little jerkface you are?" Zelda propped her chin on her fist, her elbow on the table. "This should be good. How did that happen? You're not even nobility."

Wait, had she really not known..?

"My grandmother was friends with the royal family. I dunno how that came about, but I've known them since I was four. Dorephan and Mipha were the ones that taught me to swim." He paused. "Or tried. I never was good at it."

He smiled, sitting back in his chair and crossing his arms. "I was Mipha's first test subject with using her magic on a Hylian. I was a reckless little kid. When Marin and I went with Grandma to see them when Sidon was hatched, I went in with a black eye and a nose that had damn near busted because of Marin. After she saw Mipha's magic, she threatened to give me another black eye just so she could see it again. I told her it was her turn to get a black eye, she gave me enough bruises to last me a life time."

That made Zelda laugh. "I hadn't realized you and Mipha go that far back. And your grandmother was the knight who taught you more about being a knight, yes?"

"She is," Link confirmed. "Ser Allowyn Musilia. She was a knight commander who fought in the Akkala-Medea War, under your grandmother." He sighed. "I wish I could remember more about her, but that's really all I remember. That and her voice. I can't even picture her, although I think her eyes were blue. But that's a common trait in my family, so that doesn't mean much."

He smiled faintly. "But yeah, going through the training of being a squire was a formality for me. I already knew everything the training knights were going to throw at me, because she'd already taught it to me. My sister was her best student, but..." Shrug. Awkward shrug.

Awkward indeed. Zelda hesitated, then reached out across the table and put her hand on top of his, not saying anything, just lightly wrapping her fingers over his hand in unspoken words.

Link wasn't sure what he'd been expecting as a response, if much of anything- he'd never talked about his sister, not to her, and certainly not to anyone since waking up and remembering the girl again -but whatever it was, it wasn't that.

Without thinking about it, he turned his hand over to grip hers tightly. "You know, I firmly believe that if she hadn't gotten sick, she would've been better suited to protect you than I was," he said softly. "She was better than me by a long shot. I'm not sure I ever won a fight with her without cheating. We weren't very old when the fever hit, but she already had Grandma impressed to hell and back."

"Well, you couldn't have been far behind her, in all honesty, because you've done a commendable job." She smiled faintly. "The only difference I'd see is having another female to commiserate with. But I'd not trade you. You're a remarkable Knight and exactly who and what Hyrule needed. What I needed too."

"I'm not sure how much information is still pertinent in the diary, no, but the research notes..." She beamed at him. "Thank you!"

Zelda turned back to the bed with the old books safely resting on the desk out of the way, and started to pick up her clothing, not that there were a great many items, and fold them to pack away.

He shook his head. "And here I thought girls got sentimental about their diaries," he said teasingly. "I'm going to take care of my own 'room,' such as it is." He waved over his shoulder as he headed back down the stairs.

With the trunks cleared out from under the stairs, there was more than enough room for a bed, with the space directly under the stairs big enough to drop weapons without having to store them in the Slate all the time. That was one of the things he'd liked about having the house in the first place, but the night (er, morning) before had proven that it was a little crowded down there with them.

Taking big things out of the Slate's inventory was always a fun game of 'how do I have to hold the Slate so it'll spawn that thing without it falling or tipping or otherwise crushing something?' Fortunately, the bed cooperated, materializing with the head against the wall farthest from the room.

There. That was better than a nest of blankets. That'd been inviting that morning, but more than that really wasn't Link's favorite of ideas.

Zelda got her clothes folded and put away in the trunk, then grabbed sleeping clothes and went downstairs to use the privacy of the washroom to change.

On her way back up, she paused, looking at the bed. "That looks more ideal than just a pile of blankets on the floor."

"Doesn't it just?" Link agreed. "Don't go back upstairs just yet, I'm going to need a second set of hands to get that blanket hung."

He walked to the washroom and fetched the now-dried blanket that had been hanging to dry on the far side of the washroom. The sheet and pillow case from the extra pillow were still hanging up, along with his tunic and pants from the night before, but those weren't important at the moment; he could take care of those later.

"We're going to have to hang it from the inside, to cover that open space at the stairs there," he said, unceremoniously dropping the blanket on the floor at the foot of his temporary (stolen) bed.

"All right," Zelda said, nodding as she looked to where he indicated. She stepped away to put the day's clothing on the kitchen chair, freeing up her hands to lift one corner of the blanket.

"This would be especially not comfortable," she told him. "After being rinsed out and hung to dry, it's all stiff. That wouldn't be terribly pleasant to cuddle up to at night."

"Nothing a few good shakes wouldn't fix," he said dismissively, pulling a (also stolen) hammer and a nail- one at a time, please -from the Slate. He set the Slate on the bed, and grabbed one corner of the repurposed blanket. "Can you hold the length of this up? Otherwise it's just going to fall while I try to nail this corner in."
