RP: Fear?
Characters: Kyle, River
Time/Date: After dark, September 20
Location: Lobby, near a window
Warnings/Rating: None
Summary: Kyle tries to figure out the "dementor"
Status: Complete

He'd read the network, and was pleased that Lily was back and organizing things once more. Others could have, he knew that, but he liked having her around. Something seemed right about her being there for all of them, even though he'd never really interacted with her much beyond hellos and pleasantries at meals.

But Kyle was curious. He was very curious about dementors. He hadn't ever seen one -- and apparently he still wouldn't see one -- but he was curious about them.

He knew from reading that there were wizards around to keep them -- it, just now -- at bay, so he didn't think it was a concern just then.

Kyle moved to one of the big windows in the lobby, wondering if they were going to think to board them up again this time, or if that wasn't a concern. Couldn't they get inside though? Maybe they couldn't. He wasn't familiar with them at all, after all.

Resting his palms on the glass, Kyle peered into the darkness. He saw some silvery creature lope by, and he thought that must be what they were using to keep the dementor away. What would happen, he wondered, when there were more dementors than silvery things? Was it strictly a one-to-one ratio, or could one silver thing keep away multiple dementors?

He wondered if they had enough people to make silvery things to keep them safe ... and what would happen if they didn't.

She was aware of being led somewhere, and she turned her head to glance back at the windows, wondering if the show was over or if Kyle had changed his mind. Her brow furrowed slightly, and she felt a sudden stab of guilt. If he found it interesting, she should... stop pulling him away from it. She could go entertain herself. Or find Kaylee or Simon to keep her company. Or even one of the animals - she was growing fond of them, and they were not affected by the ghostly creatures.

"You can stay," she said softly. "I..." her thoughts derailed and changed abruptly. "There are very few and may be easily fought. Is not... am strong enough." She sounded vaguely uncertain about that. She frowned. "I am strong enough," she said more clearly, nodding her head for emphasis.

She didn't want to be the reason that he missed out on seeing interesting things. The dementers, she supposed, were quite fascinating if you could look at them without cringing. She would prefer pictures, actually. Or being able to distance herself from her emotions to take a purely analytical approach to seeing the dementors. As it was, though, the Alliance had taken that option from her long ago.

"You are strong enough," he assured her. "There was nothing to watch anyway," he pointed out gently. Nothing he could see, and the darkness was ... not nearly as interesting as her.

"Do you wish to watch a movie or complicate a game?" he inquired, a teasing grin playing at the edges of his lips. He would be amenable to either, or simply retreating to their room to hold her and do their best to ignore the darkness outside and the dark creatures it held.

Turning to face her, he rested his hands on her shoulders as he gazed at her. "Whatever you want to do," he said to her.

She frowned a bit, eying him suspiciously and trying to decide if it was selfish to want him with her rather that here where he'd been before, but if he was agreeable to it... she wanted him with her, and it was that simple. There was probably no use giving the dementors more to feed on by encouraging herself to feel guilty about it, so she licked her lips thoughtfully.

"Both?" she asked, though her face scrunched up, trying to figure out if that was even possible in the way she meant it. Oh sure, they could simultaneously watch a movie and play a game, but both engaged different aspects of the mind. She wanted to simultaneously challenge her brain to distract it, while engaging in the escapism of getting lost in a movie, and she wasn't certain that was possible. Though perhaps if they picked the right game, they could work out a way to make it work.

"Game," she said, her voice still sounding mildly uncertain as her gaze slipped back to watch the silvery animal dart around, and she wondered if it would even be possible to distract herself tonight, given the circumstances.

He smiled. "Could watch a movie about a game," he teased her lightly when she suggested both. But that wasn't nearly as interesting. "Could make a game of a movie," he reflected thoughtfully. "Point out errors and anachronisms," he continued.

The TV did occasionally go out if the dementor came too close to the hotel windows, but he didn't think it would be too much of an issue as long as the patronuses continued to lope around outside.

Besides, if they picked a movie they'd seen often enough, they could enact the parts until the TV came back on. They ... were fairly easily entertained for geniuses, after all.

She stuck her tongue out at him a bit teasingly. "Could watch a movie about a game," she agreed, though that wasn't at all what she meant and would not be nearly as engaging as she wanted - no, needed - it to be.

Though making a game out of a movie sounded like a good idea. Finding the issues with camera angles, continuity errors in terms of the script. They could probably even judge the scriptwriter on their effectiveness to stay true to the character, or build a convincing arc. Could watch multiple movies of different genres and search for themes - perhaps some genres would score higher than others based on their criteria? They would have to develop a system to grade...

Yes. This would suit fine. Her face broke into a smile as she snuggled against him. "Love you," she murmured gently, and though those two words were supposed to say it all, they did not begin to encompass truly how much River felt towards Kyle. How much like her missing half he had become.

Kyle smiled softly as he wrapped his arms around her to hug her close to him. "Love you, too," he replied, pleased that he seemed to have effectively pulled her attention away from the darkness, even if only for the moment. Drawing away from her, Kyle crossed toward the shelf that housed the various DVDs to try to find something that would make a challenging game.

He decided on a variety of genres, selecting a comedy, a romance, a thriller, a horror movie, and a drama. After a moment of thought, he replaced the horror movie and opted for a cartoon instead. Given everything else that was going on, he didn't think they needed to be watching created horror.

Settling the discs into the player, he picked up the remote before retreating to settle onto the couch with her. He selected the comedy first, because it would be a good warm-up. "Ready?" He asked as he glanced over to her.

She followed him to the movie shelf because it was instinctive for him, but let him choose the movies, settling down on the couch as they headed that was and immediately moving to curl up against Kyle when he sat down, forming her body to his side.

"Are we clear on the parameters?" she murmured, a small grin on her face. They hadn't gone over them, but she didn't think it was overly necessary as it would be pretty much understood between them what they were looking for. She was familiar with calling outloud, and pointing when she noticed things in this sort of game, and she didn't think today was the sort of day that called for an outright competition, so she would be forcing that natural need to keep score down as best she could.

Quirking her lips a bit again, she nodded her head, snuggling up against Kyle and resting her head against his shoulder. She shivered once as a wave of cold hit her, but the effects were lessened now, and her eyes moved over the little dots that made up the picture on the screen, watching the movie contentedly.

"Clear," he agreed. He assumed it would be like all the other times since they'd accidentally discovered this game. Or rather, when they'd elaborated on the rules of pointing out inaccuracies to turn it into a game. They could do that with just about anything, really -- make a game out of it.

He started the first movie playing before setting the remote aside. Slipping his arm around River, he rubbed her shoulder gently before he turned his attention to the TV.

Hopefully, this would be a good distraction, and hopefully they could ignore the increasing press of darkness as they invested themselves into the movie.
