RP: Fear?
Characters: Kyle, River
Time/Date: After dark, September 20
Location: Lobby, near a window
Warnings/Rating: None
Summary: Kyle tries to figure out the "dementor"
Status: Complete

He'd read the network, and was pleased that Lily was back and organizing things once more. Others could have, he knew that, but he liked having her around. Something seemed right about her being there for all of them, even though he'd never really interacted with her much beyond hellos and pleasantries at meals.

But Kyle was curious. He was very curious about dementors. He hadn't ever seen one -- and apparently he still wouldn't see one -- but he was curious about them.

He knew from reading that there were wizards around to keep them -- it, just now -- at bay, so he didn't think it was a concern just then.

Kyle moved to one of the big windows in the lobby, wondering if they were going to think to board them up again this time, or if that wasn't a concern. Couldn't they get inside though? Maybe they couldn't. He wasn't familiar with them at all, after all.

Resting his palms on the glass, Kyle peered into the darkness. He saw some silvery creature lope by, and he thought that must be what they were using to keep the dementor away. What would happen, he wondered, when there were more dementors than silvery things? Was it strictly a one-to-one ratio, or could one silver thing keep away multiple dementors?

He wondered if they had enough people to make silvery things to keep them safe ... and what would happen if they didn't.

River was... beyond the levels of worried at this point. She was doing her best to keep it at bay, but locking herself in her room wasn't helping, locking herself in the library was worse, and she didn't need Simon to further the unpleasant thought fodder by poking at her with needles. He was trying to help. She didn't need him to be the subject of terrifying thoughts and fantasy.

What she needed was for everyone to calm down for a while and think pleasant thoughts. It was almost enough to make her miss a time when her thoughts had been her own, regardless of how disconcerting THAT had been. At least then, she understood what her own fears were. What her own... desires were.

She had slipped down to the lobby, searching for... well company, she supposed, and a smile brightened her face when she saw that Kyle was present there, slipping across the lobby in her bare feet, before moving to wrap her arms around his waist, settling her head against his back.

This was better, she decided. This was helpful to forget what was going on outside, even with it so close.

"Cold," she murmured softly. She wasn't, at least not in terms of her current body temperature, but that wasn't really what she was getting at.

"I know," he said quietly, unsurprised when he felt River pressing against his back. He dropped his hands from the pane of glass to rub his chill fingertips along her arms when they wrapped around him.

He knew that she hadn't meant physically, at least not yet.

His eyes searched the darkness before he glanced over his shoulder to her, his hands squeezing hers when he found them. "What's our plan?" he inquired, a hint of a smile on his lips before he glanced back out the window.

It was nice to know the silvery things were there. That people were keeping them there. That they'd be safe ... at least in theory. At least for now. He also knew that he and River couldn't really do anything this time around, except try to not become casualties. Or ... soulless beings, apparently.

"Hide," she murmured quietly. "Slip away into dark corners and hope that they cannot find where you are keeping your secrets." She blinked up at him with big dark eyes. She knew that wasn't reasonable by any stretch of the imagination, but it was what she wanted, darn it, to hide away somewhere that was safe from these horrible creatures that were going to zap any sense of happy that she'd managed to accomplish since being here. That any of them had managed to accomplish.

Her eyes darted past him, and out the window as she too watched as the silver magic creature darted past. She licked her lips briefly, staring at it. "Wish I could," she murmured. And whether she meant learn how to cast the creature using magic, or run around the way it was, protecting the hotel, she wasn't really sure. It was both simultaneously, and at the same time neither.

"Neither idea is terribly productive," she muttered absently, releasing Kyle to curl her arms around herself protectively, rubbing them a bit as though she were cold. And she was. She was cold inside, with dread of what was coming. Thoughts and feelings slipped around the hotel, some memories, some sense of what was coming while at the same time having no idea what was in store. And at the same time, she did not like that creature and how it felt. Like all of the abnormal, horrible things that accompanied death and rotting without any of the natural life cycle needs. It fed on souls. If someone was mistaken as to its horror, clearly they were foolish. She glanced up to Kyle again. "Better suggestions are welcome?" she phrased it as a question needlessly.

Kyle shook his head slightly. There were no better suggestions. Not this time. They couldn't stand and fight that which they couldn't see. They lacked the magic to keep it at bay.

He turned to face her when she released him, and he wrapped his arms around her shoulders, drawing her body close to his own. "Stay brave," he said quietly. "Stay warm. Stay alive." He knew that depression could lead to suicide, and he wondered if anyone here was prone to that course of action.

"Protect them," he replied quietly. He'd seen worries in the face of the blond man who was a wolf inside, and he didn't think Tristan was the only one concerned about the creatures they were being faced with. "Protect the ones who would let the dark win," he elaborated.

Some would stand despite the fear, the pain, the sorrow, he knew that. He'd seen that. Some of them had wills of steel, and some of them ... would crumple like so much soggy paper. He didn't have River's psychic abilities, no, but he watched people. Watched their faces, their body language, their expressions, their eyes. He heard their heartbeat, their breathing, the slight shifts in their voices as they spoke. He listened to the stories those motions told, and he suspected some things they'd like to hide.

She was secretly convinced it was going to be too much - and not just for her. Mal was not going to handle this very well, nor Jaime, and if this drove them apart after everything that the rest of them had done to maintain that little ray of sunshine, River was going to swim through the water - line or no line - break through whatever boundaries they'd placed up there, and kill anyone and everyone directly or indirectly involved in this experiment, and she hoped they knew that.

Assuming she could, and she hadn't gone comatose before that. There were a lot of dark secrets trapped away in her mind, not all of them hers but all of them hers to experience. She'd be assaulted with them, she knew, as soon as a Dementor thought to show its face, and while she knew that fearing it now, while it was outside and held at bay from the Patronus' was foolish and only served to assist it when it did eventually get in - because River had no doubts that it would, that they would - but she couldn't help it. It was a fear that pained her from her head through down to her toes.

"How to, when it requires fighting the demons inside rather than out?" she murmured, burying her face in his chest and trying very hard to be brave and not cry. "Have never been..." able to fight those off. If she could... it would have made the past few years so much easier.

"You've never had me before," Kyle reminded her gently. He didn't always know how to be what River needed, and sometimes he was helpless in face of one of her moods, but he tried. He always tried, and sometimes he thought that was enough.

"I will help you fight," he assured her before he pressed a soft kiss to the top of her head. "You have my love," he whispered into her hair.

"I will help you fight your demons," he promised her. He didn't know how, exactly, but maybe it would be enough that she had him, that he would try to fight for her. He would try, too, to help protect the ones she cared about, as well as he could.

If he himself wasn't rendered useless by the emotional draining abilities of the creatures outside.

The fear was still present, of course, but at Kyle's words River felt a different feeling become more prominent. A lighter feeling, one she wasn't used to, or hadn't been used to for a while. A feeling of warmth, of safety, of being cherished.

"More than I can ask for," she murmured softly, touched by his kindness and wondering why his selflessness continued to surprise her. She wondered what she had done to deserve such dedication.

Her hands moved over his chest, just wanting to touch him right now before easing their way up over his shoulders and over the back of his neck and into his hair. She stood up on tiptoes, her lips pressing against his neck and jaw, before moving to seek his lips, kissing him deeply.

"Don't have to ask," Kyle said quietly, easing his arms around her waist and holding her gently close to him. He glanced down, watching as she moved her hands over his body, and he smiled to her.

Tipping up his chin, he smiled as he felt her lips on her neck and jaw, and he lowered his head to return her kiss. His eyes closed and his hands slid slowly up her back, pressing lightly at her shoulder blades to keep her close to him.

"Is big brother watching?" he murmured against her mouth with a soft smile before he resumed the kiss gently. One hand moved to stroke softly through her hair, and he wondered if they really would get through this okay.

She rather thought it was something that she should have to ask for, that it was too much to be freely given when she was undeserving of it. Though she supposed thoughts like that were based on a fear that if she took too much, if she accepted too much of Kyle's love, that he would one day realize how truly undeserving of it she was, and he would turn around and give it to someone else. Someone who could give him more than she could.

"Always," she murmured against his lips when he asked if big brother was watching, though she did shift her focus a bit, glancing around using her peripherals to see if she could spot Simon in the immediate vicinity. She didn't think it would be too hard. If she listened closely, she'd be able to hear him spluttering. "Could move to where the eyes are less watchful?"

At least, from the viewpoint of the other captives. She was pretty sure that there were only a few select places where they would be largely unseen by their captors. She cared less about that, and more about Simon not ruining her happy with Kyle with his big brotherness, and Kyle's own comfort. Everything else was secondary to her emotions.

He nodded. "Or could watch the darkness with me," he said quietly. "Can you see them?" He didn't think she could. She was special and talented and smart and wonderful, but she wasn't a magician or a witch or a sorceress or anything of that sort. Nothing that could see them.

"Can watch the silver protection run by," he suggested, though if she really wanted to go back to their rooms, he would. He was just interested in the happenings outside.

Granted, being out in the public places meant behaving so word didn't get back to Simon, but they could behave just fine where they were. It wasn't as though they were going to strip and have relations here in the lobby. He smiled a little; that was behavior better suited for the bedroom or the shower.

She hesitated, and peered out the glass, shaking her head slightly at Kyle's question. "Not with my eyes," she whispered softly, her voice shaking a little bit. But in her mind, she could see them, though whether through her imagination or through the eyes of someone else, she wasn't certain. She could see them floating, their black capes flying out behind them, though there may not have been any wind, their clammy dried out skin of unnatural colours... their mouths, when just the right amount of moonlight hit them.

She winced, and whimpered softly, turning her head away from the window to force her thoughts in a different direction, curling her body against Kyle's.

"Can see them?" she asked him. She didn't think any of the books in the library had offered images of these creatures, but she could look again. If there was not one, she would draw him a picture. The ones that the gunman had taken of the puzzles did not depict accurately the true fear the image caused. She did not think that anyone would get it.

He shook his head. "Just the picture that was on the network," he admitted. For all that though, that might not have been very accurate at all.

Kyle wrapped his arms around River, rubbing her back and her arms gently before he drew her away from the window. Maybe watching the darkness wasn't a good idea for her.

"Maybe we should go upstairs," he suggested quietly. "Away from the windows."

He realized then what he should have known before; she'd be more deeply affected than he would be. She had a plethora of unpleasant memories, not all of them her own, and he had very few memories, save what he'd gained here.

She was aware of being led somewhere, and she turned her head to glance back at the windows, wondering if the show was over or if Kyle had changed his mind. Her brow furrowed slightly, and she felt a sudden stab of guilt. If he found it interesting, she should... stop pulling him away from it. She could go entertain herself. Or find Kaylee or Simon to keep her company. Or even one of the animals - she was growing fond of them, and they were not affected by the ghostly creatures.

"You can stay," she said softly. "I..." her thoughts derailed and changed abruptly. "There are very few and may be easily fought. Is not... am strong enough." She sounded vaguely uncertain about that. She frowned. "I am strong enough," she said more clearly, nodding her head for emphasis.

She didn't want to be the reason that he missed out on seeing interesting things. The dementers, she supposed, were quite fascinating if you could look at them without cringing. She would prefer pictures, actually. Or being able to distance herself from her emotions to take a purely analytical approach to seeing the dementors. As it was, though, the Alliance had taken that option from her long ago.

"You are strong enough," he assured her. "There was nothing to watch anyway," he pointed out gently. Nothing he could see, and the darkness was ... not nearly as interesting as her.

"Do you wish to watch a movie or complicate a game?" he inquired, a teasing grin playing at the edges of his lips. He would be amenable to either, or simply retreating to their room to hold her and do their best to ignore the darkness outside and the dark creatures it held.

Turning to face her, he rested his hands on her shoulders as he gazed at her. "Whatever you want to do," he said to her.

She frowned a bit, eying him suspiciously and trying to decide if it was selfish to want him with her rather that here where he'd been before, but if he was agreeable to it... she wanted him with her, and it was that simple. There was probably no use giving the dementors more to feed on by encouraging herself to feel guilty about it, so she licked her lips thoughtfully.

"Both?" she asked, though her face scrunched up, trying to figure out if that was even possible in the way she meant it. Oh sure, they could simultaneously watch a movie and play a game, but both engaged different aspects of the mind. She wanted to simultaneously challenge her brain to distract it, while engaging in the escapism of getting lost in a movie, and she wasn't certain that was possible. Though perhaps if they picked the right game, they could work out a way to make it work.

"Game," she said, her voice still sounding mildly uncertain as her gaze slipped back to watch the silvery animal dart around, and she wondered if it would even be possible to distract herself tonight, given the circumstances.

He smiled. "Could watch a movie about a game," he teased her lightly when she suggested both. But that wasn't nearly as interesting. "Could make a game of a movie," he reflected thoughtfully. "Point out errors and anachronisms," he continued.

The TV did occasionally go out if the dementor came too close to the hotel windows, but he didn't think it would be too much of an issue as long as the patronuses continued to lope around outside.

Besides, if they picked a movie they'd seen often enough, they could enact the parts until the TV came back on. They ... were fairly easily entertained for geniuses, after all.

She stuck her tongue out at him a bit teasingly. "Could watch a movie about a game," she agreed, though that wasn't at all what she meant and would not be nearly as engaging as she wanted - no, needed - it to be.

Though making a game out of a movie sounded like a good idea. Finding the issues with camera angles, continuity errors in terms of the script. They could probably even judge the scriptwriter on their effectiveness to stay true to the character, or build a convincing arc. Could watch multiple movies of different genres and search for themes - perhaps some genres would score higher than others based on their criteria? They would have to develop a system to grade...

Yes. This would suit fine. Her face broke into a smile as she snuggled against him. "Love you," she murmured gently, and though those two words were supposed to say it all, they did not begin to encompass truly how much River felt towards Kyle. How much like her missing half he had become.

Kyle smiled softly as he wrapped his arms around her to hug her close to him. "Love you, too," he replied, pleased that he seemed to have effectively pulled her attention away from the darkness, even if only for the moment. Drawing away from her, Kyle crossed toward the shelf that housed the various DVDs to try to find something that would make a challenging game.

He decided on a variety of genres, selecting a comedy, a romance, a thriller, a horror movie, and a drama. After a moment of thought, he replaced the horror movie and opted for a cartoon instead. Given everything else that was going on, he didn't think they needed to be watching created horror.

Settling the discs into the player, he picked up the remote before retreating to settle onto the couch with her. He selected the comedy first, because it would be a good warm-up. "Ready?" He asked as he glanced over to her.

She followed him to the movie shelf because it was instinctive for him, but let him choose the movies, settling down on the couch as they headed that was and immediately moving to curl up against Kyle when he sat down, forming her body to his side.

"Are we clear on the parameters?" she murmured, a small grin on her face. They hadn't gone over them, but she didn't think it was overly necessary as it would be pretty much understood between them what they were looking for. She was familiar with calling outloud, and pointing when she noticed things in this sort of game, and she didn't think today was the sort of day that called for an outright competition, so she would be forcing that natural need to keep score down as best she could.

Quirking her lips a bit again, she nodded her head, snuggling up against Kyle and resting her head against his shoulder. She shivered once as a wave of cold hit her, but the effects were lessened now, and her eyes moved over the little dots that made up the picture on the screen, watching the movie contentedly.

"Clear," he agreed. He assumed it would be like all the other times since they'd accidentally discovered this game. Or rather, when they'd elaborated on the rules of pointing out inaccuracies to turn it into a game. They could do that with just about anything, really -- make a game out of it.

He started the first movie playing before setting the remote aside. Slipping his arm around River, he rubbed her shoulder gently before he turned his attention to the TV.

Hopefully, this would be a good distraction, and hopefully they could ignore the increasing press of darkness as they invested themselves into the movie.
