Lily most likely thought he was overreacting, and perhaps he was. It was difficult for him not to overreact when it came to werewolves, because nearly having been attacked by one tended to do that to a person. The year Lupin had come to teach at Hogwarts, Severus had taken the threat he posed quite seriously, even if no one else had. Everyone else seemed to think that 'mild' Professor Lupin couldn't possibly hurt anyone. They, however, hadn't ever seen him transformed. He even took the threat Lupin posed more seriously than Dumbledore seemed to, and not only because of Black's escape. Yes, he was only dangerous once a month, but he was exceedingly dangerous during that period.

The attempted attack in fifth year had traumatized him, when normally nothing ever fazed him. And what was worse was, he couldn't tell anybody what happened. Not even his best friend. Dumbledore had forbidden him to, with a veiled threat alluding to a loss of his scholarship if he happened to say anything. As poor as he had been, that would have meant he was out of school, permanently. The old bastard had known exactly what he'd been doing, and he guaranteed Severus's silence -- at least until Lupin had proved that playing the hero was more important to him than protecting the students. But by that time, Severus had been a fully qualified wizard, and furthermore, Dumbledore needed him. He wasn't about to sack him.

Potter and Black, of course, had been under no such restrictions, or if the Headmaster had insisted they not tell, they had simply ignored him. They were free to twist the story however they liked, and somehow they had managed to convince Lily that Potter had saved his life. Whilst that was technically true, he hadn't been surprised that they conveniently forgot to mention that he wouldn't have needed saving if they hadn't set him up to be attacked in the first place. But he was only a greasy, unpopular Slytherin. His life was unimportant, anyway.

He wondered, now, if Lily had ever given a second thought to his 'theory' that she had so quickly dismissed after she discovered Lupin was, in fact, a werewolf. Because now she obviously knew. But she still probably hadn't given any thought at all to the fact that her best friend was trying to tell her the only way he could that people in her House had tried to kill him. He imagined he never crossed her mind after fifth year, or if he had, she likely thought Potter and Black had been doing the world a great service by trying to get rid of him. He was only a worthless Death Eater, after all.

It hurt still, to this day, as much as he hated to admit it. Dumbledore had effectively cut him off from the only means of support he'd had, at the time. Or ever, to be honest. At least before coming here. Though such a thought was entirely fanciful, Severus suddenly found himself wishing he'd known Dr. Scully back then. Not that she would have been a doctor, of course, and he had no reason to think she would have even given him a second glance, but she might have. And she might have cared that he'd almost been served up as a hot meal for a werewolf, even if she didn't believe in the existence of werewolves. He could have simply said it was a rabid dog or something.

On the other hand, she was a Yank, so they likely never would have run into one another. Pity, that. At least they had here. A number of the other captives would likely tell him he was mad if he even contemplated being grateful for his existence here. But he suspected that they had all had something to lose. He ... didn't. No one back home cared whether he lived or died. Not after he'd killed Dumbledore, at least, when he'd lost the one person who might have cared, otherwise. Not Dumbledore, of course, who only 'cared' inasmuch as he had been useful. Rather, he thought Professor McGonagall might have cared. The last time he'd seen her, however, she had been trying to kill him. That swarm of daggers she'd sent flying at him had said so, quite clearly. In fact, he felt a bit faint at the very thought.

Or that could have been simply because he hadn't eaten anything in ... he wasn't sure how long, now.

He needed to eat. Severus knew that, logically; his body still required fuel. Yet his stomach had other ideas entirely. It had been in knots ever since his last conversation with Lily, which had quickly disintegrated into an argument. So much for attempting to be friends again. Yes, Lupin was her friend, but she seemed to have understood the importance of the Wolfsbane when they made that first batch. Now, when the possibility of not having any for the next full moon presented itself, all her previous caution appeared to have flown out the window, but why? He simply couldn't fathom it. Other than, perhaps, she simply thought he was overreacting.

Which led him right back to square one. And made his stomach bind itself up even further. But he still needed to eat, even if nothing he found in the refrigerator or any of the cupboards sounded the slightest bit appetizing. Perhaps he simply ought to swipe some biscuits to take back to his room, in case he managed to calm down enough later to eat one or two. Chocolate chip. That would work, he thought as he grabbed an open package and wrapped a few in a serviette for later. Even if he would have preferred shortbread. Beggars couldn't be choosers, after all, and especially not if they might be prone to passing out from hunger before long.

Ariana was eating some ice cream at the table. She was on indoor restriction and was kind of annoyed by it. Not that she wanted to go outside -- at least until she'd been told she wasn't allowed to. She knew they were just trying to protect her, that they didn't trust the world outside, that they thought the captors were going to spring the traps back up without warning, and they didn't want her getting hurt.

So she was only allowed outside if someone went with her.

She watched the man as he moved into the kitchen, studying him curiously as he moved. She wasn't sure who he was, but she wasn't sure who a lot of the new people were. "Hi," she said if he hadn't noticed her yet -- or even if he had.

Swinging her legs a little, she spooned a little more of the ice cream from the bowl, sucking it off the spoon as she watched him, blue eyes settling on him. "Who're you?" she continued, as if she had forgotten her manners. But she'd been feeling better ever since they'd taken the magic away, so she was a little bolder. Not to mention that Lizzy was an absolutely wonderful influence on her.

After numerous years of teaching, Severus had become something of an expert at ignoring any children in the immediate area who were not actively seeking his attention, unless they were involved in some sort of rule-breaking. Then they never failed to escape his notice. So it was little wonder he had passed the girl at the table, on his way to the cupboards, and paid her no mind. At least until she'd spoken. Because that indicated that she wanted his attention -- at least temporarily.

"Good afternoon," he said quietly, grasping his wrapped biscuits in one hand. His eyebrows rose ever so slightly, however, when she asked who he was. "I'm Severus Snape, and you are...?" he asked, but that was before he got a good look at her eyes. Eyes that were eerily familiar, come to think of it. "Miss Dumbledore?" he tacked on a second later, moving closer to join her at the table. "Do you mind?" he asked, nodding toward another nearby chair.

He wasn't certain why he wanted to join her, exactly, other than a general curiosity. Dumbledore's sister, who -- if Rita Skeeter were to be believed, and there was no reason to think she was -- had been hidden away, like some dirty secret. If she were prone to bursts of uncontrolled magic, that would lend some credence to Skeeter's account, he supposed, but Severus couldn't quite help thinking that secrecy was simply just the Dumbledore family way. It certainly had been with the eldest son.

Severus Snape. That was a familiar name, and she smiled a little. Lily had mentioned him a time or two, if only in passing or in discussing some other bit of magic.

"Ariana," she said, nodding a little. She couldn't stay she was surprised he knew her name. Maybe Lily had told him. She imagined Lily talked about her to a lot of people.

She shook her head when he asked if she minded; it wasn't as though she owned the kitchen. "Is your magic all quiet too?" she asked. She assumed it was; everyone else's was, and she had no reason to believe anyone was an exception to this. But she was curious -- or nosy, however someone wanted to look at that -- and she wanted to know.

"A pleasure to meet you, Ariana," Severus answered with a nod, pulling out the chair and sitting. She appeared to be having ice cream, which ... sounded fairly good, actually, but he decided against trying to locate some of his own. He'd only just sat down, after all.

When she asked about his magic, he nodded again with a small smile. "As a matter of fact, it is," he answered, though he wouldn't have exactly characterized his magic as 'loud' before. Then again, he didn't have the same issues with controlling it as she did, so who was he to critique her choice of words. He imagined that would come as a relief to her, whereas he ... had been concentrating on the werewolf issue instead to take his mind off the fact that he was entirely powerless (and therefore vulnerable) at the moment.

She nodded sagely, poking at the ice cream in her bowl and stirring it around some. "No one's magic works anymore. Not even Lizzy's," she said. "I don't mind though," she said. "About mine not working, I mean." In fact, if hers never ever came back, she wouldn't be in the least put out by it. It simply meant she wouldn't accidentally end someone's life here like she had at home.

"Do you think they'll really give it back?" she inquired as she thoughtfully swirled her spoon in the ice cream. "Lily thinks they took it away because we scared them and now they're just going to keep it forever and ever," she continued before licking the ice cream from her spoon.

"She thinks they won't really give the guns back, either," she added as she lowered the spoon back to the dish. "Did you have a gun too? Or just magic?"

"I honestly couldn't say," Severus answered with a shake of his head, and before he'd even realized it, he'd unwrapped a biscuit and had a bite. Though he wondered how Lily thought they might have scared their captors with their magic. Perhaps it was simply the fact that they had decided to see if they could cast spells in proximity to one another without blowing themselves up. Because, obviously, that meant they were thinking along the lines of fighting side by side, and ... if all the magic users teams up against their captors, they might not stand a chance. It seemed to be a good working hypothesis, at least, until he discovered any information that might contradict it.

He smiled again, swallowing, when she asked if he'd had a gun. "No, just a wand, I'm afraid," he answered, before taking another bite and chewing thoughtfully. And a silver dagger, now he thought about it, in the potions kit. Though they might have taken that, as well. A cataract knife wouldn't be much good except perhaps to hobble someone by cutting the Achilles tendon.

Ariana nodded solemnly. "Lily was going to let me use her extra wand, before it got taken. But Magius is teaching me about his magic, and how I might be able to try doing some things his way. When we get our powers back, I mean. I'm not sure completely he'll be able to, but there is no harm in trying," she said as she straightened up a little. "And he said we would stop if it wasn't safe anymore."

She started to scoop together the bits of ice cream with the most chocolate chips in them before lifting the spoon again. "I don't really like the guns," she continued. Clearly she was feeling chatty today, and obviously he was interested in hearing all her thoughts because he was sitting down within conversation range. Ah, the things she was learning from Lizzy.

"Are you learning other people's magic too?" she inquired. She didn't recall if Magius had mentioned teaching the others as well. Ari knew they'd gotten together outside to try things, but she wasn't sure if they were all teaching each other things.

Severus nodded, quite pleased to hear that. The more he heard about Magius, the more he liked the fellow. "Definitely no harm in trying," he agreed with another nod, and moved Magius up another peg on his mental scale for his concern with safety.

"Neither do I," Severus added, with another shake of his head regarding guns. He'd never particularly cared for them, and they were fairly useless against a wizard, anyway. The one time he'd been 'mugged' whilst living in London, he'd melted his would-be attacker's gun into an unrecognizable puddle of goo.

"Not so far," he said, when she asked if he'd been learning others magic. "But I would like to." He took another bite, to cover his hesitation, then chewed and swallowed before adding, "There was also something that I was specifically thinking of teaching you, if you would be interested."

"I just don't want to ... accidentally hurt him," she admitted glumly. Not that there was any chance of that at the moment, but when her magic woke up again ... there was every chance in the world she'd do just that. Still, it wasn't worth thinking about; they had some time, apparently, before their magic was due to be returned -- if it ever would be.

"Like what?" she prompted when he said he wanted to teach her something. She narrowed her eyes a little, but she supposed she should get used to the idea of people wanting to teach her rather than regarding her as something fragile and frightening and unteachable. She was convinced she could learn, and that there were people here who could teach her, but she was still wary of the idea of it. As if somehow learning things would make her magic even more unmanageable than it already was.

"Perfectly understandable," Severus answered with a nod. It wasn't quite the same, of course, but when he'd made that branch fall on Petunia's shoulder at nine, he knew that he could have really hurt her. He hadn't meant to, but just a few inches over, and the branch might have caught her on the head and given her a nasty concussion, or possibly even broken her neck. As much as he may have disliked Lily's sister, he'd never wanted her dead.

When the girl narrowed her eyes at him that way, he had a difficult time not smiling. Severus took another bite of his biscuit in the meantime to occupy his mouth, so that he wouldn't do just that. After he swallowed, however, he said, "I would like to teach you something called Occlumency. Most people employ it as a magical defense of the mind against external penetration, but in your case, I think it might go a long way toward helping you to control your magic."

She'd never heard of that, which meant pretty much nothing at all. Albus would never discuss magic with her. Abe did, sometimes, if she begged, but he'd never teach her anything. He just explained concepts to her. That one, though, had never come up. Which either meant it was more advanced and Abe hadn't learned it yet, or it was something he hadn't thought she could understand.

Either way, the idea of learning something like that wasn't promising. She didn't know if she could, but she didn't want to say as much. It baffled her, too, why strangers here were so much more willing to try to teach her than her brothers or her mother had been.

Ari spooned a little more ice cream to buy herself some time while she thought, drawing the spoon out of her mouth slowly. "What is it?" She finally decided to ask. Maybe if she knew what it was, she could decide if it was going to be something she could do.

Severus watched the girl carefully, as she pondered what he'd said for the longest time. Numerous different emotions seemed to cross her face in the interim, and if he'd known her better, he might have been able to identify them. As it was, since they'd only just met face-to-face, he simply watched with interest. Until, of course, she finally requested more information.

"In the simplest form, the discipline involves merely clearing one's mind of all emotion," he began, with a slight shrug. "As one becomes more practiced at manipulating the emotions, however, one can suppress selected thoughts and feelings." In his case, he normally chose thoughts or feelings that would contradict the lies he had been telling the Dark Lord at any particular time, since his mind's being entirely blank would have been suspicious. "For you, I think suppressing any memories or thoughts that cause you particular agitation would be beneficial."

Ari slid off her chair to carry her now-empty bowl to the sink, rinsing it out before carefully stacking it in the dish washer, along with her spoon. Retreating back to the table, she climbed back up into her chair, resting her arms on the table as she tipped her chin up to regard him.

She didn't think she could do it, but she wasn't sure if that was simply her past speaking, or ... what. Simply because she hadn't ever done it didn't mean she couldn't. Not that she'd managed to do anything here (yet, anyway), but that didn't mean she couldn't, or wouldn't be able to.

"All right," she agreed after a moment, lifting her eyes to regard him. "I might not be very good at it," she cautioned him. Sure, she could think straight now, when her mind wasn't buzzing, but when the magic came back, so too would the noise.

Severus couldn't help chuckling at that. "My last pupil wasn't very good at it, either," he answered with a slight shrug and a shake of his head. "But I daresay I won't let that stop me."

Though Potter didn't seem to have understood at the time what all was at stake. Somehow he didn't think Miss Dumbledore would be quite as unconcerned. Still, he gave an ironic little smile when he realized, in spite of what he'd told Potter, he was still volunteering to teach, after all.

She frowned a little. She wanted to be good at it, but she didn't think she would be, and she wasn't sure she understood what he meant or why it seemed to amuse him that she might be bad. Or why it was funny that his last pupil wasn't. And if someone else was bad at it, then didn't that somehow increase her chances of being bad at it?

Sighing, she decided it didn't matter right now. They couldn't do anything about it anyway right now.

Scritching lightly at the side of her nose because it itched, Ariana tipped her head to one side. "Think I'm going to go try to read some of Magius' book now," she said, since it was rude to simply wander off when one had been conversing.

"I suppose I should contact you when we have our magic back then?"

"Very well," Severus answered with a nod, when she mentioned going off to read. He couldn't very well fault her for preferring books to his company. He generally preferred books to people, as well.

When Miss Dumbledore mentioned contacting him once their magic had returned, however, he gave a slight shrug. "Not necessarily. There are some techniques of Occlumency that can be mastered without magic, though if you would prefer to wait and think about it some more, I will understand entirely."

"I would like to think about it," she agreed. After all, Magius had offered first, and maybe there'd be some sort of interference. Perhaps she'd talk to him first to see what he thought about it.

"Thank you," she added after a slight pause, a little smile tugging at her lips before she turned to retreat from the kitchen.

It was still odd to her, all these people offering to teach her things when her own brothers, her mother, refused to consider the idea. Maybe it was a difference in the times, or maybe these people really didn't know what they were getting into with her.

But perhaps her brothers and mother had simply been overprotective and overreacting. She had no way of knowing though, did she?

"Think nothing of it," Severus answered with a shake of his head and a small smile. If it had the slightest chance of protecting the others from outbursts of Miss Dumbledore's uncontrolled magic, he was all for the idea. And, he suspected, giving the girl some peace of mind might only increase the positive benefits she might reap, in the long term.

He could only hope she didn't prove as lamentable an Occlumens as Potter, but they would cross that bridge when -- or if -- they came to it, wouldn't they? He smiled again as the girl made to leave the kitchen and finished off his last biscuit. Then he rose to look for something more substantial, since either the biscuits or the conversation had whet his appetite. Though he supposed it didn't really matter which had done it, so long as one had.
