Susan had been on her way to bed, intending to simply crash as she was, too tired to think about much beside that. Her steps paused in the hall though as she heard a noise. That had sounded like ... breaking glass.

Easing an arrow from her quiver, she fitted it to the bow as she started slowly down the hall. Fighting in tight quarters like this was far from ideal, but she would do the best she could. She wasn't certain what room the noise had come from, so she stood in the hallway, listening. She heard grunts and noises that she could only describe as primal, and she shuddered, her exhaustion all but forgotten. When the door - her door - burst open, Susan didn't even have time to scream. She fired one arrow very accurately, and very soundly, but before she had time to even draw the second arrow, they were on her ...

____________

Lily had slept like the dead that night, though when she woke - early - she had vague recollections of ... breaking glass and thumps. Dreams, she supposed, inspired by one of the many fears playing chase in her mind. She'd checked the network before even getting out of bed, but there were no updates she hadn't seen. She showered, she dressed, and she stepped into the hallway. She froze before her foot even crossed the threshold. Something was wrong.

Leaning forward, sticking her head out the door, she peered down the hall. First toward the end closer to her, the end with the infirmary, and then toward the other end. She clamped her hands over her mouth to trap the scream as she saw the mangled body at the end of the hallway. She recognized the girl by the bow broken over her middle, and Lily stumbled back into her room, slamming the door closed.

For a moment, there was panic. Only panic. Simply panic. The blind animal instinct to run, run far from daner before her humanity reasserted itself and she tried to think. She did the only thing that made sense just then. Reaching for her Blackberry, Lily marked the post urgent and sent only three words, broadcast to the network:

They got in

He hated kids, he had decided, and their complete lack of understanding when they were in danger, and their utter refusal to comprehend that there were people trying to help them.

When this was all over, he was going to find some way to guilt someone into realizing that they'd left the two youngest of their numbers all alone in their unsafe room and none of them had noticed. But for now... he'd have to hope for the best. His illusionary magic was not terribly strong when dealing with things that were not him, but he was able to cast a temporary spell over the room they were now residing in.

He was pretty sure what bothered him the most about this current situation was that Lizzy had been so close to being safe, and then at the last second had overridden him and detoured back to Ari's room. He wasn't clear on exactly what had happened there, except that he thought that Ari had been in the safe room at one point in time and left it and... ugh. He hated kids, he really did.

Lizzy still didn't really understand what was going on. Everyone was apparently in a fuss about something, and she could hear running around and screaming and gunshots being fired. When all that noise had started, it had put a damper on her stories about things she'd done with Saul, back in her world, and how she missed him and some of those people there. She'd fallen into a more silent contemplative state.

"Think they'll try to come in here?" she asked Ari softly.

"I don't know," she promptly answered. She'd let Lily take her to the safe room, but she'd been scared there. She was emotionally wrought, and she was afraid her magic would escape. It ... was buzzing again, louder than before. Loud like it was at home, like angry bees trapped inside her mind. So she'd left, because she didn't want anyone to be hurt if she had an accident. Someone had tried to stop her, but she'd ducked out.

The wards felt funny when she went through them, and she'd hurried along to the her own room, and it was there that she'd encountered Lizzy and Ches again.

The whole place was loud, and everyone was frightened, and she'd cried because she wanted her brothers to be here, and they weren't, and she wanted to be safe but was afraid she'd hurt people, and she didn't like this place, not at all.

"Probably," she decided as she drew her knees up closer to her chest, resting her cheek on them as she gazed toward the door.

Lizzy tried to remember how to breathe when she heard the creatures in the hallway, curling up in the corner. Things had seemed so much more fun, and so less scary and frightening when it had just been them sitting in there talking about how the adults were probably wrong and it was probably nothing and there was no reason to have safe rooms, even if they had known that that was lies. She curled up and hopes that they would just go straight passed the room they were in without coming inside, but the hope was short lived as pounding on other doorways in the hall caught her attention. She let out a soft scream, which seemed to draw them towards the room.

With each pound on the door, she curled further in on herself, whimpering lightly. And then she swallowed her fear, and stood up a bit, slipping off the bed she'd been sitting on and moving towards the door as it creaked and cracked, and splintered. She summoned up all the power she had, looked the reaver right in the eye and screamed, "GO AWAY!" as loud as she could.

There was a whole moment where the reaver just stopped, and looked at Lizzy in what could only pass as confusion. Then it took off down the hall.

Lizzy stood there in the doorway for a moment, peeked her head out of the cracked frame and down the hall to make sure there weren't any others before she returned to where Ari was still sitting. "It's okay," she told the girl softly. "We'll be safe here."

Ari twitched and jerk with each strike of fist or blade against the door that suddenly seemed so incredibly fragile. She could feel her magic stirred up and angry, and she curled up against herself in an effort to hold it in. She was panting a little, sobbing as she clutched her knees, pressing her cheek against them. She heard Lizzy yell, and she opened one eye to peer toward her.

"How did you do that?" she managed to whisper before she realized she wasn't going to be able to keep her magic in. She cried out as it thrust itself from her, a raw burst of power rolling from her hands as she pressed them against the mattress. It froze solid under her, and she sobbed softly as she tried to ease off of it. Her dress was frozen to it, and it came unstuck with a tearing noise.

She was just glad that was all that had happened. It could have killed Lizzy, or set the room on fire, or any number of other things, and at least now it could be quieter for a little while. Ariana curled up on the floor, her back against the dresser, hidden from the broken doorway by the now-frozen bed.

Ches reacted instinctively, a soft hiss leaving him as a temporary shield went up around him and Lizzy, and then slipped back down as the bed froze. He didn't like that feeling of power that he felt shoot out of Ariana, and recognized how much worse it could have been, and that his shield may not have covered it.

It was draining a lot of his energy, but he put the illusion back up. It was particularly important now that the door was broken - he couldn't rely on Lizzy's ability to work next time.

Lizzy barely noticed the shield go up, so focused on Ariana and her magic, and transforming the bed into an ice cube. She wandered over, touching the frozen mattress sort of curiously, and then crawled over the cold surface to peer down at her friend.

"Magic," she told her, both in response to her earlier question, and as a question of her own. "Not like yours, though, I can just make people do things that I want them to. Sometimes. It doesn't always work here, but it sometimes does. And you... you can freeze things? Saul used to be able to make thunderstorms and stuff. Can you do that too?"

She wasn't afraid, though she thought Ches might be, or maybe she should be. But it was just Ari. She saw no reason to be afraid of the girl, even if she could do magic.

"Hey, don't cry, it's okay," she said suddenly. "We can unfreeze the bed later. Or you can stay in my room."

"I ... I can't control it," she admitted in a mumble, sniffling and wiping a hand across her eyes. She didn't want to get into why she couldn't control it, but it was enough that she couldn't. "I didn't know it was going to freeze the bed. It could have exploded it." Or Lizzy, but Ari thought it prudent not to say that.

She blinked away the tears and looked at the door. "What if they come back?" she said before she rested her head back on her arm, staying right where she was on the floor. She didn't want to get on the bed, and she didn't want to get on the other side of it, closer to the door, so she stayed right where she was.

Ariana wasn't particularly worried about the bed. There were other wizards and witches here that could probably undo it. She was concerned that her magic had escaped at all, and that she hadn't been alone when it had happened.

"Oh," Lizzy said, because that was all she really could think of to say. Unpredictable magic was something she was only vaguely familiar with, particularly when it could do more than just one thing. Her magic could be a bit unpredictable, but at least that was just in terms of the strength of the order, and not in terms of what happened after she'd given it.

"It's okay," she soothed the girl. "Ches can protect us from it," she nodded her head. "Nothing bad is going to happen or anything. Right Ches?" she took the cat's annoyed look as a 'yes' before continuing. "And even if they do come back, it doesn't matter, we'll just scare them away again, all right? Nothing to be scared of."

She was certain of this. But not comprehending what kind of danger she was in was a typical thing for Lizzy.

"How does he protect us?" Ari murmured as she glanced around to see if she could spot the cat. She thought it did matter if they came back. Wouldn't it mean Lizzy's magic had worn off? And what if she had another accident and really did explode the bed this time?

"I just want it to be over," she mumbled as she reached out for Lizzy. She would have rather had her brothers, but in lieu of that, she was getting a little attached to the younger girl. While Lizzy wasn't exactly a witch or someone who could protect her, she did have her voice power, and wouldn't that be enough for now? As long as Lizzy could keep scaring them away ... it really would be okay.

"I don't know, but there was a blue shield or something earlier that I think came from him," Lizzy said, remembering. "And sometimes he does other things too. He's magical too," she ducked down behind the bed when Ari reached for her. "It'll be okay," she assured the girl. "If they come back, I'll yell at them, and you can turn them into frogs or something, and then eventually they'll stop coming back."

She grinned, confident that this would be the case, and relaxing into a sitting position behind the bed. "I promise. Everything will be okay," she assured Ariana.

Maybe the cat really was an animagus and just hadn't transformed in front of Lizzy. Or maybe he couldn't. She'd seen her brothers use shield charms, but they'd never been blue.

So ... maybe not.

She smiled sadly and simply wished she could turn them into frogs. She might. Or she might blow them up. Or she might let them in. She didn't dare try to use her magic on purpose, because she couldn't. People got hurt. People died.

So she cuddled up against Lizzy, and closed her eyes, and quietly waited for everything to be over.
