RP: Arrival - Marlene and Open
Who: Marlene McKinnon
When: Early Afternoon - April 21st.
Where: Glanmore Peakes' Corridor - Second Floor
What: Just arrived

I'm going to be late, she thought as the Knight Bus came to a screeching halt. It was just a matter now of how late, and how bothered her mother and father would be when she came tumbling into their home. At least I'm dressed for the party, she thought with a smile, glancing at her new dress, smoothing it out with her hands, before breaking into a half run. Her shoes she carried in her hands, still wearing her less lovely working shoes.

Hurrying long she made her way up the walkway to her family home and kicked off her shoes. She grabbed at the door handle and with a slight hop began pulling on her heels as she opened the door and stumbled inside. It took a moment for it to sink in, and she blinked several times in disbelief. It wasn't her parent's home, instead she was..in Hogwarts? "What's all this now?" she blurted in confusion. There was no chance now she would be reasonably late, now she was doomed to be painfully late.

She recognized where she was immediately, although not somewhere she usually found herself during school. Making her way down the hallway she peeked around, glancing at the showcases of various beasts on display. "Hello?" she called out as she drummed her fingers on the showcases as she passed by. "Anyone?" she called out, "Hello?"

Making her way along she stopped to stand in front of the portrait of Glanmore Peakes. She could always ask Peakes, she figured. What did she have to lose?

"Peakes, be a good chap. I don't suppose you'd mind telling me what's going on here?" She asked and watched as he nervously glanced around before edging out of his portrait. Marlene placed her hands on her hips, with a small huff. "That's awfully rude," she exclaimed stopping her foot. Now where to go and what to do. There didn't seem to be anyone around to ask. What a mess, she thought.

"Yes, it is," he said with a sigh. "A lot of things have happened since-" He waived his hand toward her. "Since that party of yours. The history books are full of facts, dates and names. It's all rather depressing."

He nodded. "I know it's mental, and I'm not. If we were coming up with a prank, it would have been a lot more fun and a lot less depressing," he said with a grin. "Party of you knows that I'm not lying. You were- wherever you were, ready to go to the party and then all of a sudden, you're at Hogwarts, where you can't Apparate, without using the Floo or a portkey. Nothing explains what happened, because there is no way to explain it."

He walked closer and offered her his arm, because those heels couldn't be comfortable on a stone floor. "Come on, let's walk. I can show you the school as is now. Fourth floor has been turned into research. Seventh floor is the Ministry floor. We didn't have a hospital, but I guess you've just become the Head of Health or whatever they are going to call it."

It would be depressing if it was true she thought. Then again it could be. It was all somewhat a bizarre thought to entertain. Still she was here for no legitimate reason other than what Peter suggested. None that she could think of for the moment, so it could be true. Maybe, she supposed. "It sounds it," she said softly, "depressing, that is."

There was no other real option to explain away what was going on, and it left a sick feeling in the pit of her stomach. It would be nothing short of a catastrophe of epic proportions with so many lives lost senselessly, and for what? Something to do with children? There were far to many questions to ask and for the life of her, Marlene couldn't even begin to ask them, except for one. "Does my family know I'm gone?" She asked, feeling worried. "It was supposed to be Mum and Dad's anniversary party. They must be so worried," she said feeling terrible about it. What must they think had happened to her, with everything as it was in her time. "Everyone was supposed to be there. My brothers, me. My aunts and uncles and cousins. All the family but me, I guess."

"Okay," she said taking Peter's arm. A walk might do some good she thought. Right now anything would help. "Give me the tour then," she said with a little sigh. "I guess I could be the Head of Confusion, that's more like it. It really is enough to give you a headache."

"Because it is." In fact, it would get a lot worse once she learned about what happened during the two wars. "On the bright side, all four of us are here and so is Lily. Now you. Hopefully more of us will come back. Harry's here too. He's... twenty-three and Ministry. He killed You-Know-Who. Twice. He's some kind of hero. They made a holiday out of his birthday."

He shook his head. "People have been arriving at different times and from what we can tell, history remains unchanged. We don't know how it works, but we don't seem to disappear from history. It's like a duplicate of us is created." He sighed. "There is something you should know. At that party- You-Know-Who comes and kills you, all of you. I'm sorry." He knew that it shouldn't matter, considering that everyone was dead now but it also wasn't the same.

"I.. know it's a lot to take in, but I don't want someone blurting things out and you aren't prepared." He started to walk toward the Ministry's office. Just about everyone would be there and she could see for herself. "Sirius is doing wands now, Remus is Head of Creatures, I'm not sure how that's being called either. James works in the DMLE. I was working in agriculture, but- not anymore. Long story there. I might be working in the DoM soon enough."

Once she heard of the others that were already here, Marlene's expression brightened for a moment. "All my favorite people," she said giving Peter's arm a little squeeze. The idea that Harry was fully grown and older than herself gave her a little chuckle, and even better still he was Minister. Although she was a little disappointed that there was no more chubby little baby cheeks to squeeze. "Oh, my. Wasn't once enough?" She said delighted. A world without the Dark Lord, it was all too wonderful. Except for the end of it all, but she was choosing to focus on the silver lining.

That was at least until that silver lining slipped out of her grasp, and Peter's words felt like a punch in the gut. She couldn't hear much of what Peter said, it was like everything was rushing in all at once, and everything went white hot and silent. All of them? Her whole family?

"Okay," she managed to say meekly. She couldn't say much, she couldn't really think and for the moment she was just grateful for Peter's arm. She reached up to brush away a few tears from the corners of her eyes. She knew more would come later when she had the time to be alone. When it really sunk in and hit her fully.

Peter stopped and hugged her tight. He knew that eventually she'd hate him for it, but right now he could give her some comfort, however short lived. "I'm sorry," he whispered. "I'm so very sorry."

He let go and gave her his arm again. "It's... hard. To think of all the people that are gone. Somehow the death of every wizard and witch doesn't seem as bad that the death of a few people. It doesn't matter that it happened decades ago. Something about numbers and what the mind can cope with."

He looked at her not sure if they should keep on going. "Would you rather find a room? You can pick anything other than the Ravenclaw tower. There are people in the Hufflepuff dormitory, but only two rooms are taken. You don't have to be there. You can stay in the Griffindor tower. Lily is there."

Marlene uttered a few small sobs while letting herself be pulled into a hug and for the moment allowed herself to feel the swell of her aching heart. So much loss was hard to fathom. Not just her own, but all the witches and wizards, their families and dearest friends. Death was a part of her work, and not everyone could be healed. Not every friend in the field could be saved, but she had learned long ago how to cope with the losses. Still, right now it was her loss and it stung, and the grief was crippling.

"It's an awful lot," she said taking Peter's arm once again. "It wasn't decades ago for me, it was just about to happen," she said feeling like a failure. Her whole family gone, herself too, but that came with being in the Order. That was a chance they all had to take and anything could happen. But her parents, her brothers and the guests in her family line... All gone in one fell swoop.

Marlene didn't know what she wanted to do or where she should go but she did know one thing for sure, "I'd like to see Lily," she said pushing forward. "Where to stay I can figure out later, right?"

Peter didn't say anything, because there was nothing to say, nothing that could make the immense loss feel better. They all had to deal with their losses in their own ways, even if too many of them had chosen to ignore it, considering this like some time travel and ignoring that people had died during that time.

"I know it wasn't. I think with time, we've all started to think of it as a jump and we focus on the time that it's passed. It makes things a little better, even though it's not really better."

He nodded. "You can decide later. You can stay somewhere temporarily if you want time. We can go to the seventh floor. Lily might bet there and if not, we'll get a house-elf to find her for us." They really needed a new map, because this was too inconvenient. "Come on, let's go find her."
