Regulus/Roxanne

Today proved that Gryffindors were insane. Sure, Regulus liked to win, but he reserved anything that could kill him for important things and certainly not for a Quidditch match against a pro athlete. The insanity of it all was even more obvious when you considered that even if Regulus had caught the snitch the other team would have still won.

Trying to avoid the additional insanity that would come from his brother and his friends, he decided that it was probably best if he found Severus and stuck with him, but before he could achieve his goal he found himself in front of Weasley. "Nice win," he said, politely, hoping that this would be the end of it, because Weasleys were never normal, even when they were mostly Blacks, like this particular branch of the family.

Roxanne was absently examining a bruise that was blooming just above her right elbow. She looked up sharply at the voice, before smiling broadly. "Thanks!"

She was pretty sure she annoyed Regulus, but if she was honest, it was kind of funny. Plus, she was never one to turn away from a challenge, and they were few and far between so far in this place.

"You fly really well," she offered, her bat hanging loosely at her side as she tilted her head in his direction. "You're quick!"

"Thank you. I do enjoy flying and the game," he said with a smile. "Not enough to want to die for it," he added, shaking his head. "You must have played in school." She was too good to have played just today.

Regulus looked around and still no Severus. He wasn't sure what else he was supposed to say to this woman who felt so strange and different. "Did you ever consider going pro?" He wasn't sure if she was good enough for her time. Standards in Quidditch were every changing. "I thought about it, but- in the end, I don't love it enough to put myself in danger for it."

This was good! A conversation! Ish. Roxanne swung her bat absently at her side, still smiling.

"Nah, I'm nowhere near good enough," she shrugged, completely undeterred. Quidditch had been a bit of fun at school and with her cousins during holidays, but that had always been where it ended for her. "Plus I definitely don't care about it enough either. And what if it becomes a job and stops being fun, right?"

Roxanne glanced around the pitch af the other people milling about. It seemed no one quite wanted to head back inside yet. "Were you looking for someone?"

"I'm pretty sure that most Gryffindors take it as seriously as a job, if not more," Regulus answered, although it might have been the Gryffindors of his generation, since Quidditch had been another way to prove supremacy.

"Not specifically," he said, although that was a blatant lie, so he decided to cover it up with a partial truth. "I would like to know my brother's reaction," he said with a little smirk. "Sirius is one of those who takes it very seriously. This defeat is possibly not as bitter just for that reason."

"Okay then," Roxanne grinned. She didn't believe him for a second, but then if he wanted to lie, that was fine. No skin off her nose and all that stuff. She was happy enough for the conversation to move onto Sirius.

"Ooh, harsh," she turned, scanning the crowd for Sirius. She'd got to know him pretty well while working on the wands, such as they were, and she liked him. But it was mad, the idea that he and Regulus and grown up in the same house and ended up so different.

"I can imagine that," she agreed. "He's a but intense isn't he? My brother's a bit like that." She still steadfastly refused to talk about her family in the past tense.

"I don't see why it's harsh when he would do the same," he said, not really caring about her opinion on the subject. His relationship with Sirius wasn't something that these people would ever understand.

"Intense? That's not really the word I'd use for Sirius," he said, thinking how she could come up with that word. "in fact, I find that he's not intense enough. He doesn't take anything seriously. His focus might be strong, but the subject of such focus changes with great speed." Unless the focus was on James Potter, but that was something else he didn't discuss. "I find him childish, selfish and disruptive. Intense would be a strong improvement over all of that, especially considering that he is the older brother." He didn't miss that she referred to her brother in the present tense. "Is your brother as annoying as mine?"

Roxanne thought about explaining her joke, but decided it was probably easier just to leave it. Regulus struck her as a very serious type (ironically). Merlin knew what would happen if - when her Dad arrived.

"I meant intense more as in.. full on," she replied offhandedly. "But I suppose I get what you mean. Still, he's been pretty good at work." Sure, their job was rather haphazard at the moment, and there was a lot going on. But maybe that suited him, as it did Roxanne.

"Sometimes," he shrugged. "Freddie doesn't really have an off switch. I'm sure you'll see one day."

"So when you said intense you actually meant energetic? Active?" What was it with this generation and their lack of precision. It wasn't just the Sorting Hat that didn't mean anything anymore, but also the English language. "I'm not surprised that he's enjoying the job. It's something new and with the occasional blow ups." Until it got repetitive and boring, and then he would complain that it wasn't for him.

Regulus thought that the chances of seeing every relative were low, but she seemed rather attached to the idea of having her family here, so he simply smiled. "I'm sure I will, but now if you'll excuse me, I do have to find him. Enjoy your day."
