RP: Party!
Who: Everyone!
When: 8pm onward, 13 March
Where: The Room of Requirement
What:PARTY!

The Room of Requirement has been set-up for a lively party. There's food (and cake!) thanks to the House-elves, and a surprisingly generous assortment of alcohol. Kirley has rigged up a music system to play a variety of music (heavy on the Weird Sisters obviously, but the RoR had a bunch of albums that had been left by various students throughout the ages so there's an eclectic mix). A dance space has been cleared, and there are little sitting areas arranged for more private moments--lots of cushions and pillows strewn about to make little nests, some squashy armchairs, etc. It's very clearly been sourced from all over the castle, and from items that had been left by students/faculty/professors through decades so the styles are all over the place. Kirley says it's not the Bubble Palace, but it's the best he could do on short notice.

Hermione sat beside him happily, though she thought she may never get used to seeing him so young. The eyes were the same though, and the gentle smile.

"Harry's told me about you too. Or, well, this you I suppose. I knew, know, you, oh, this timetravel does make things complicated doesn't it. Still, it really is very nice to see you Prof, Remus. Are you enjoying the party?"

His older self hadn't seemed much like a weird sisters sort of person, but that didn't mean this younger version wasn't. She didn't want to judge him by his older self, after all. She'd need to keep reminding herself that he was basically a brand new person.

Remus laughed softly. "Time travel complicated a great deal, yes. I've taken to thinking of the man who was your professor as an entirely separate person. If it helps, you can refer to him as 'he', too." It was a little more difficult now that Teddy was there and wanted to call him 'Dad', a name that both pleased and terrified him at the same time. But, Remus would figure out how to square the two.

"I've only just arrived a short time ago. But so far it's seems pleasant enough." Taking a sip of his drink, he offered her one of his soft smirks that wasn't a true smirk. "I will say, it's refreshing to know the festivities won't result in detention for the lot of us. In our day, if there was a party in Gryffindor tower, we were likely to be spending the next week in detention making up for whatever scheme certain people had decided was the entertainment of the evening. What about you? Enjoying yourself or suffering through for friends?"

"You've been here longer than I have," she said with a laugh. "And I wouldn't say any of this is ideal. But it could certainly be a lot worse." She wondered if he knew how much of this bleak future was her fault.

"You'd get a weeks worth of detention for having parties?" She'd often been annoyed by the Gryffindor parties, but as far as she knew no detentions had ever been handed out. "What sort of parties did you throw? I don't think we ever got in any more trouble than a scolding!"

"Just a little bit. It's nice to have a few more people around, now. It was just Sirius, Regulus, Ron, and myself to start." Remus shrugged one shoulder. "Ideal is rarely reality. It's still better than I think a lot of us were experiencing when we got here. And, if it's this or staying dead, I think I'll take this."

The soft smirk that wasn't a smirk bloomed into a boyish grin. "Parties were never just parties when the four of us were involved. They became...events," he explained with a laugh. "Let's just say that our stunts were not limited to pranks and it was not unheard of for elaborate magic to be employed to turn the common room into crazy environments. And then there were the times we were sneaking in large groups of students from other houses, although those were fewer in number. Sirius and James never met a party they couldn't turn into an experience."

"That is a very pragmatic way to think of it Remus. Not that I'd expect anything less from you."

She couldn't help but share vis infectious enthusiasm as he began telling her about the exploits of the Marauders. He'd rarely wanted to talk about those times when they were at Grimauld Place. Or maybe it was Sirius who didn't want to talk about it, and Remus who was respecting his wishes. Or both. Either way, it was very nice seeing him so animated now.

"It sounds absolutely horrible," she laughed. "But then I've always been a stick in the mud at parties. But it does sound like you did some impressive bits of magic."

Again, Remus could only shrug and take another sip of his drink. He considered their situation a paradise compared to what he'd been living before, on the road, not sure of the next day's meal, having to humble himself in ways most people would look down upon just to get a roof over his head for the night. But, it wasn't something he thought would make for good party discourse.

"I have to admit, I was possibly the worst prefect in the history of the school," he said instead, keeping to lighter subjects. "McGonagall despaired of my ever being able to stop their shenanigans, I'm sure. But, I think, in a lot of ways, it was always about the magic. We were all very interested in pushing the limits of what the magic we were taught could do, finding new ways to do things, creating our own twists on magic. The rest was just...teenaged arrogance and showing off what we discovered."

"I was always a little in awe of your map," Hermione said. "It was such a brilliant piece of charms work. And the way you managed to insert your personalities like that? I always wanted to study it, but it wasnt mine, and I would hate to have damaged it. It has always been so precious to Harry, ever since you, well, older you, told him where it came from."

She'd always wanted to pick his brain about it, but there had never been a good time. Always something more important or more pressing. But now, maybe she could. Time seemed to be their only real resource at the moment.

"Thank you. Coming from a witch with your reputation, that's quite the compliment." Remus smiled at her enthusiasm for the subject. He could easily see her being one of his future self's favourite students if she'd approached her school work with this same kind of attitude. "So Harry did get his hands on it, then? That's good. It feels like something that should have been passed down...carefully," he added with a laugh.

"But, here." Setting his drink to float beside him, he reached into his pocket to pull out his journal. He'd been making some notations to refresh his memory of the spells they'd used on the first Map before they got into actually working on the new one. He wouldn't show her the new work, but... "This is the modifications we added for the security piece to work," he explained, holding the book open to the correct page. "See, this rune here along with the change to this calculation is what allows for mimicking four methods of speech instead of one." It was one of the more simple modifications they'd made. He wouldn't give away their real secrets, of course. But, Remus had never met an opportunity to help someone else learn that he didn't like.

Hermione stared rapt at the notebook, taking mental pictures of all the things that she wanted to do more research on later. It was a very unique use of the spells, and Remus remained a very good teacher.

"Thank you for showing me this. It is really quite clever. I've seen most of these spells and runes before, on their own their all fairly simple, but coming up with the combination must have taken some large mental leaps! How did you even think of some of this?"

Remus could understand why she'd been impressed with his teaching when it seemed like she was the sort to absorb any knowledge she could with a sponge. Paired with the sort of teacher he hoped he'd been, one who was overly generous with the knowledge he imparted to his students, it would have made quite an impression.

"Trial and error mostly." Remus shrugged as he shrunk the journal and put it back into his pocket. "Once you know all the pieces and what each does, -- specific rune meanings, what a particular arithmancy calculation adds to a bound spell, how the wand movements and words shape the intent -- it's easier to guess at how a slight change could modify the spell. It's a lot like learning to write, I think. You're always learning new words and phrases and ways to use the words you know to convey a new idea."

He laughed softly at an old memory of their experimentations. "And, sometimes it's just fun to play 'What will happen if we do this'."

That all made sense, and Hermione nodded along as he explained. She loved Harry and Ron more than anybody else in the world, but she had a fleeting moment where she wished she'd had friends who would experiment with magic with her. Her boys were wonderful but doing extra studying was not something they'd ever want to do.

"That sounds like so much fun. Maybe someday, when there's time, I could join you in some experimenting?" She wasn't sure how creative she would end up being, that had never been her strongest suit, but she did love a puzzle, and the way he described their process sounded like a lot of trial and error problem solving.

"Of course, the more the merrier," Remus replied with a smile. "I rather think there will be plenty of opportunities to experiment with new magic as we continue to sort out this mess the castle has gotten us into. So, we can play and be productive at the same time." He'd have to feel out things a bit more. But, he could see her collaborating well with himself and Peter. The full Marauder mayhem they called creating spells might be a bit much for a start, though.
