So, for my third Torchwood rec set, I'm focussing on the interface between Dr. Who's 'Doomsday', 'Utopia' and 'Last of the Time Lords' episodes and Torchwood. The stories here focus on the 'Year That Never Was' and the after effects of Jack's abrupt disappearance at the end of Season 1 and his re-appearance.

Why should people click?
Three very short vignettes by three different authors on the same subject. I'm treating them as a single entry because of the unifying concept and the short length. Each story is about what happened to various Torchwood characters during the 'Last of the Time Lords' in the year that never happened. I've seen nothing like them elsewhere and the stories, brief and heartbreaking, are amazing. They were orginally written as backstory for an RPG however, understanding anything about the game isn't needed.

Why should people click? This is exquisite angst at is most beautiful and touching. You'll cry an ocean of tears reading this and yet it's one of my all time favorites. You can't walk away from this and not be touched.

Why should people click? If you love angst with the promise of a happy ending then I highly recommend this story. The authors pulled out all stops and as a result you'll cry at the utter heartbreak the Doctor is going through even as you want to hit him over the head for doing something he knows is stupid. Well written and thought out I think it'll leave you very satisfied in its conclusion.

*waves* I’m X-Tricks and I’ll be reccing Torchwood for the month of April.

So … Torchwood is a relatively young fandom, the show is just finishing up it’s second season (season finale is Friday!) but it’s a fast growing one. A spin-off of Doctor Who, it’s another of Russell T Davis’ signature productions and a show where ‘the slash is canon’. Unsurprisingly, therefore, it’s very much a slash heavy fandom. I, however, will be providing a variety of fics from slash to gen to het.

It’s intended for an adult audience and the episodes range from rather campy humor to pretty dark; sex, violence, shady morals and dodgy science abound. In the coming month, I’m going to introduce you all to what I feel to be some of the best writing in the fandom, as well as a few choice vids and meta. But first, let’s briefly visit our ( main cast. )

Why should people click? Jack Harkness has been a part of Torchwood for … quite a long time. What were some of the previous decades like for him? This story becomes jossed (non-canon) by the recent episode ‘Fragments’ but I don’t think that takes away from it at all. It's a wonderfully written, long series of stories set from the 1950's to the 1990's, with promises of more to come.

Richard Lawson writes long, beautiful stories. This lovely example is a continuation story based on the complete canon directly, and it grew into a rather complex and wonderful series resolving nearly all of the relationship tangles in Ranma 1/2, collectively known as Thy Inward Love.

Why should people click?

Especially for US media fans who aren't used to seeing characters lip-synching along to a songvid's lyrics, this vid just rocks. Ranma's life at the Tendo Dojo is pretty much chaos all the time, and Nerima is pretty crazy, full of disorganized and barely managed chaos that somehow manages to stay interesting and move the plot along. For me, this vid captures that and more... it reminds me of the glorious disorganization of the original Muppet show and the utter fun of the first few Muppet movies. The Happiness Hotel is a low-rent haven that our heroes stay at briefly in The Great Muppet Caper, and I never seem to be able to keep from giggling to hear Muppet voices coming from Ranma 1/2 characters' mouths. Genma now sounds like Fozzie sometimes when I read the manga, which is really funny and very disturbing on some level!

If you've never downloaded Anime Music Videos (AMVs) from animemusicvideos.org before, I highly, highly recommend scrolling down to the "Things you need to know about the AMV -- Anime Music Video Archive" section in this LJ post by LJ user flummery, who explains the site and how to use it much more understandably than I can. This particular AMV is a 50.4MB AVI file, so it's rather inaccessible to dialup users, sorry. Anime vidders tend to make high-res files. The AMV site is huge, with an amazing collection of local and offsite links to vids, so even if you're not planning on watching this vid, I recommend setting up a membership there.

It's a well-written, satisfying post-movie fic, with some grand Sands torture. *eg* El Mariachi hears of an attempt on El Presidente's life, and reasonably enough, assumes Sands must have been involved. He goes looking for the man, knowing nothing of what became of him after the coup. All is not as it seems, and El inadvertently leads some old enemies to Sands's location. Then, as the CIA agent is tortured, El has to decide if he cares enough to mount a rescue. Very angsty, and Sands is wonderfully in character with the snark. The story goes on to show Sands how there can be people in the world who care for him. Aw.

A classic example of an El-Comes-Back-For-Sands story, and a wonderfully well written one, too. This is the most believable version of that setup that I've read, and the story goes on into a gripping plot and character driven tale. Auburn opens and closes with versions of the "legend" surrounding these two, which sets the tone nicely for the story in between. I should mention, this story also has really hot hurt/comfort sex.

This story has the most realistic portrayal I've read of Sands dealing medically (and painfully) with his own wounds. It's all from his POV, so we get a lovely glimpse into our beautiful psychotic's twisted mind. Vanillafluffy's writing is always fresh and creative.

It's almost a fandom cliche, now, to start OUaTiM stories from the end of the movie where the wounded Sands is propped against a wall in the streets of Culiacan. It's rare though that an author can believably pull off Sands caring for himself, considering what bad shape the movie left him in. In Darkness Bound, Sands gets a little help from the kid, but most of his medical problems, including pain and infection, he deals with alone. Then, Vanillafluffy introduces RC, a mysterious colleague of Sands's, who helps him get revenge on the remains of the Barillo cartel, and offers him an independent position outside the CIA. This sets up the situation for others of Vanillafluffy's exciting stories. The sequel to this one is Clockwork Mexico followed by Taking Care of Business.

There are those writers who are so good their stories are sublime, and Hippediva is one. She also has a very dark and disturbed muse, and you can see the results in this story. Set well before the events of the movie, CIA Agent Sands is in a Paraguayan prison. Hippediva lays out her story in brutal scenes punctuated by Sands's own dreams/hallucinations/delusions of performing musicals on stage. Yes, musicals. It's a surreal escape and a bizarre backdrop to the violence. This story may establish the origin of Sands's psychotic break, or his insanity may have already been there. Hippediva is too good to be explicit; infer what you will. This is the first story in her "Show Tunes" series, but you can read them all at the link above.

Once Upon A Time in Mexico (OUaTiM) is a small fandom of the movie sequel to "Desperado." The movie stars Johnny Depp as a corrupt CIA agent (Agent Sands), and Antonio Banderas as the guitar-playing gunfighter Sands tries to manipulate (known as "El").

Miss Becky's first OUaTiM trilogy, called "Still Standing" is an absolute classic in the fandom, and I can think of nothing better to rec first in order to introduce people to OUaTiM. After the Dust Has Cleared is followed by When All is Said and Done and finally, by Que Queires en La Vida. The first two stories are action-adventure, but not slash, though the relationship between El Mariachi and Sands is angsty and intense. In the third story (which is in English, despite the Spanish title) Miss Becky satisfyingly gives us a slash relationship. I guess you could refer to the first two as pre-slash. I have a friend who has trouble believing in many slash relationships, but she totally accepted this one because of the intense build-up to it in the first two stories.

In After the Dust has Cleared, which, like many OUaTiM stories, begins right at the end of the movie, El Mariachi, a man who often operates more on instinct than on reason, kidnaps the injured Agent Sands from the home of Jorge Ramirez, for reasons even he isn't entirely clear about. Sands slowly heals while El drives them aimlessly from town to town, telling the blind Sands nothing about where they are going or why. For some reason, one of my favorite moments in all of Miss Becky's stories is the scene where they eventually try to kill each other, and reach some kind of understanding.

Why should people click? It's Hikago fic on InsaneJournal, OMG. This is a fic that, I think, has many features that I adore in Hikago fics. There is humour (Waya is amazing, and Hikaru in denial just right) and there is that heart-squeezing obsession/love that we love in Hikago canon, as well. Also, there are multiple mentions of Ko Yongha's hair. What's not to love? *g*
