BLIZZARD

BLIZZARD

The snow in the morning is heavy, and as the day wears on, it only gets worse. The walk to the lodge is miserable, and Ebonhide and Azurcrest have the worst of it with long distances and steep hills. Visibility is too poor, and the wind is too strong, to make sledding a safe or appealing prospect. The snow piles thick on the trees and clings to everything, and the lodge's entryway and locker area is caked in mud and snow from students shedding their coats and boots before heading to dinner. Rumors circulate that there's going to be a blizzard tonight, and everyone crosses their fingers for classes being cancelled on Monday. No such luck. By the time dinner rolls around, most students are in a poor mood.

There's one more piece of bad news: The staff have determined that all students must spend the night in the lodge to wait out the storm.

In the middle of the afternoon, a blizzard sets in, stranding all the students in the lodge after dinner. The teachers pull out enough sleeping bags and couches for everyone to get comfy enough to spend the night.

That evening, Philippa Nightingale sees something outside in the snow, looking through the windows at the end of a long hallway. A teacher assures her that it was just a bear, but Pippa is certain the arms and legs were too long…

That night, Cressida Quayle swears she saw someone outside the window—or at least, the shape was humanoid. Theresa Noble hears someone trying to open a locked door into the lodge. Hazel Keating on the third floor hears something walking around on the roof.

» Dinner: The storm begins to rage outside, and after some deliberation, the staff determine it'll be safest for everyone to remain in the lodge overnight. They're expecting a complete whiteout, and it would be unsafe to allow students to move freely about campus. For the sake of this event, assume all characters were at dinner. No exceptions.

» Third Floor: In order to stay entertained, a bunch of students hang around in a sitting area on the third floor. This obscure dead end hall has a few couches and arm chairs, and two window seats. Up here, there's limited adult oversight. There's also a door that opens out onto a balcony. If you want to do anything against the rules, such as drinking (don't get visibly drunk, and remember you're limited to what you had on your person at an average dinner) or smoking (better sneak out onto the very snowy balcony so the teachers don't smell it), this is your place. Remember, you're still within reach of teachers and certain prefects who will report you.

» Third Floor: Truth or Dare: Taking place on the third floor in the little sitting area, a group of ever-changing students play truth or dare out of the sight of teachers.

» Second Floor / Library: Snow and a complete lockdown aren't going to keep dedicated students from hitting the books. The second floor is the quietest tonight, and will be the best place for private conversations.

» First Floor / Atrium: If you're ready to call it a night, or just want to be somewhere quiet to lie down or cuddle, the atrium has been filled with sleeping bags and pillows. Everyone is provided with an oversized GOOSEBERRY HIGH shirt in house colors to sleep in.

» Night: You know you're safe, but it doesn't feel safe. Even the bravest students feel unnerved, and sleeping alone doesn't sound very appealing. The best place to be is in the Atrium, surrounded by your peers, with someone you care about right next to you.
  • Reply to this comment with your character, and describe to us what they're worried about. The mods will inform you if they could or couldn't sleep. Students who can will fall asleep before midnight and have a restful evening. Students who can't will find themselves restless all night with their fears on their mind.

Quinn & Ty

Laughing, Ty shrugs and reminds Quinn, "I like Robin. I hope he's not too sore that I'm cooperating with the Man or whatever." Honestly, Ty likes all of his roommates; what he doesn't like is their inability to get along with each other. Leaning back into the sofa and taking these pokes with a grin, he adds, "Yeah. I always enjoy a good ol' surprise slumber party! What's not to like? I get to see you, I get to see other non-Coppertale buddies, Truth or Dare (which I will totally get to later and you should totally come), free swag..." He pinches the fabric of his t-shirt and gives it a tug to indicate what he means, "I think I might go Azurcrest blue tonight. What do you think?" Then he drops his hand and tilts his head a little as he looks at Quinn because he knows that she doesn't see it this way. "What about you? How's your blizzard? Looks like you're keeping busy."

The fact that Ty's considering an Azurcrest shirt makes Quinn laugh. "The blue suits you — or anything bright, really." Yes, she is, thinking about his Very Red Suit. "And I was going to let my fox flag fly, so it looks like our houses won't have any reason to complain about dropping numbers."

At the mention of 'keeping busy', she leans her side into the couch and shakes her head. "I was before dinner, but the library's been swamped since the staff made the announcement and it's... not as easy to concentrate in other places." She shrugs, remembering the last time they were all trapped inside the lodge overnight, and gives him a smile. "I'm in a better mood than our last quarantine, I promise. I might even take you up on that Truth or Dare suggestion in a little bit. I'm living the life tonight." Okay, maybe that last bit was a slight exaggeration.

Ty laughs brightly, unsurprised that Quinn wants to play fox as much as he wants to play jay, but still delighted. Sometimes, they do just balance each other out. At her assessment of the current environment, which apparently makes studying impossible, he gives a sympathetic shrug...though it's pretty clear that he's happy she's not holed up in the library. "Just consider it your night off?" he suggests, "You've earned a night off anyway! You deserve to live the life!"

He glances off in the direction of the Truth or Dare game, though, and considers. "I'm...glad you said 'in a little bit', though, " he admits, looking back, "There's something I wanted to ask you. Now that I've softened you up with my squirrely charms." While he's still smiling and teasing, there is a certain uneasiness coming to the surface too. This is most visible in a heel which is starting to bounce quickly and restlessly against the floor.

"Maybe." Is Quinn's only response to the prospect of taking the entire night off. That's an awful lot of time in which she can get an awful lot of things done... if she can find the right environment. Which, thinking realistically, she probably won't be able to do. Why did it feel like that was always the way it went?

Ty's agitation, however slight, makes her raise an eyebrow –— and the nature of the question has her curious. "If it's about where to hide bodies, I was kidding." She insists with another poke of her toe, trying to lighten the mood a little. "Mostly."

"I don't think this'll come down to hiding bodies," Ty answers, still smiling that subtly uncertain smile, and shrugs, "But you never know."

Since this acknowledgment seems close enough to a go-ahead from Quinn, he pulls in a breath and drops his palms down against his knees as if bracing himself, then starts. "Well. I was wondering if you had plans for Spring Break? Because I got invited to a wedding and I thought you might want to be my date? My friend-date, you know, like for the formal? Free trip, big parties, three days in Mexico at least and more if you want to stay after." All of this probably sounds agreeable enough -- he hopes? -- but it's what comes next that he almost chokes on. "It's...Ricardo's wedding, though. I know! I know. I thought it was a shit idea too, but Raf said we wouldn't even have to see him or talk to him or anything if we don't want to. And I thought it might be fun. And we'd be there for Raf, not Ricardo." His lips thin and he pushes back his bleached hair, feeling like a bit of an idiot as he says all of this aloud. But he does want her to go. It won't be half as fun without her. "A bunch of the others are going too; Raf, Leo, Levi, Cecil, Ravi, Sun-mi, maybe Wes. And why should he get to screw up a good time with your friends just because it's his wedding?" He laughs a bit at his own, slightly absurd joke, but really. Why should Ricardo Ramirez get to take anything else from Quinn?

With nothing else to add, he finally stops his rapid fire talking and pulls in a breath and says more quietly, "So. What do you think?"

Quinn had no idea what Ty was going to ask, but that was absolutely the last thing on the list of what she'd been expecting. It was so far down the list that it might not have even been in the running. The only things about Quinn's expression that change as Ty explains the situation are her eyebrows, shifting from levels of interest, to confusion, to apprehension, (okay, then back to interest) finally settling somewhere halfway between 'curious' and 'unsure' with the tight-lipped quiet to match. Of course Ricardo and Cristiane would be getting married and of course half of the people she knows would be tied up in it. Her immediate reaction is 'oh hell no,' but something about Ty's delivery and attitude stops her before she actually says anything — mostly because his point about 'screwing up a good time' was pretty on the nose, as far as her feelings about Ricardo Ramirez went.

She straightens herself after an awkwardly long silence and realizes that maybe she should say something instead of just thinking in Ty's general direction. "Honestly? I... have no idea. Everything you said at the start sounded good, about free trips and Mexico and you." She gives a small shrug and emphasizes the last bit with an equally small smile in his direction. "But Ricardo's wedding is... an entirely different beast." The multiple interpretations of that sentence? Entirely intentional.

What feels like a thousand questions are already forming in her mind but she knows that she can't just throw them all at Ty. Not all at once, anyway. She has to be strategic about it. "You'd seriously be okay with avoiding the groom at a wedding, regardless of what Raf said? Because I kind of feel like my being there will make you the victim of some pretty intense criticism, whether or not we'd be going as friends." There, that was like one, one and a half questions. Not a thousand at all. "And why not someone else? I know you've got other," she pauses to find the right word, fully aware that this is probably the question she least wants an answer to, "friends who have less-storied histories with the Ramirez clan." Okay, fine, two and a half questions.

During that long silence, Ty maintains a mostly light expression but his heel continues to bounce restlessly in earnest. He finally loses hold on his smile when Quinn begins to answer, but he can't blame her for being surprised and uncertain and reluctant. Which she definitely is. "Yeah. I'd be okay with that. Like I said, I'm there for Rafael, not Ricardo," he answers immediately and gives another small shake of his head, "Ric and I aren't friends. We were never friends. I only got an invitation because Rafael needs his friends there so he doesn't get into it with his brother on his special day. And if Ric's got anything to say about you or me or any of us...fuck him."

Then he pauses, touching the back of his neck. He doesn't want to say that there haven't been any other friends for a while. He doesn't want to say that there's nobody else he'd even want to take to Mexico. He doesn't want to say that no other girl could make his heart skip a beat just by saying and you like Quinn just had. Instead, he says, "...I don't know. You and I get along, don't we? We always have fun? I like being with you more than...almost anyone, I guess. And I know you can dance. Very important for a wedding." This last is punctuated with a playful, charismatic smile that looks far more confident than it feels.

Quinn tries to hide her face by looking down at her feet as Ty besmirches Ricardo's good name because she's pretty sure that laughter here would be considered 'inappropriate.' (And there are definitely no snorts in that laughter, no siree.) (That was a lie, she totally snorts.) Fuck Ricardo indeed. "Yes, we do. And yes. And that's sad." No, actually, it's pretty sweet but she isn't about to admit it. "And I can. I'm even learning to swing dance, have you heard?"

With a sigh, she buys time to gather her thoughts by crossing her legs and stretching back for a few seconds. She knows she should at least check with Rafael to make sure it wouldn't be weird, even though they've been in a pretty good place for a while. Her expression is less bleak when she looks back at Ty, and she returns his smile with a crooked one of her own. "You argue a pretty convincing case. Can I let you know in a few days?"

Ty laughs softly, glad to hear Quinn make a joke even at his expense, and leans back into the sofa. "I'm at least in your Top 20, right? Top 30? I could live with Top 30. And I had heard that, yeah. I bet you're a natural. Who only steps on her partner's feet when he totally deserves it." He lapses into silence again at that sigh, though, and waits with his green eyes flicking down and away and back again when she finally answers. And it's a maybe. But at least a maybe isn't a no. He returns her smile, "Of course. Yeah. This isn't for a while anyway. I just wanted to ask before you had other plans with Jesse or something."

Then, playfully, he adds, "Will it help if I say 'fuck Ricardo' again?" Because, yes, he did notice that quiet, amused snort.

Quinn's laughter is way less restrained this time and she nods. "Probably. Contrary to popular belief, career goals and hockey are actually only ninety percent of what motivates me to do anything. The other ten is fuelled by 'fuck Ricardo Ramirez.' And as for Spring Break, no, no plans with McBride."

She looks away, biting her lip and trying very hard not to launch into a bitch session about her so-called best friend — Ty doesn't need to hear about that again, or probably ever. Her eyes land on the Truth or Dare circle and suddenly engaging in silly party games seems like a really, really good idea for this week's quarantine. "Then I'll let you know in a bit. But for now," she gestures her head toward the circle, "how would you feel about making some questionable decisions?"

This earns another laugh out of Ty too, but he watches Quinn as she looks away and realizes that he's touched on...something. He hesitates, on the verge of asking if she's all right when she indicates the Truth or Dare game instead. He can take a hint. "All of my decisions are questionable," he points out brightly, rising to his feet and offering the girl a hand to pull her up and off the couch, "But I'm down to make a few more."

Heck no, distractions are almost always preferable to actually talking about shit. "Hey Hawkeswood, some of your friends might take offense to that." Quinn replies, taking his hand gladly and dusting herself off with her other when she's upright. "At least a few of us were outstanding decisions, thank-you-very-much."

Ty, who hadn't considered that interpretation of his comment, begins laughing immediately. He holds up his hands defensively and corrects himself with all the seriousness he can muster, "Almost all of my decisions! I dare you to forgive me?" They're not playing yet, but it's worth a try.

"We're playing by league rules," Quinn reminds Ty as though there's been an official Truth or Dare league this entire time. She ducks behind him to pick up her backpack and, from behind, puts her hands on the back of his shoulders to push guide him toward the game. "Section six, subsection 'B', line sixteen: 'No dares outside the circle.'"
